Hi guys,
Last weekend i was at a 1/4 mile event not far from Köln, Germany with my 5.
At the 3th run the oil pressure lamp lights up, and i stop the car.
The day after, i opened up the engine and saw that the gear between camshaft and oil pump was very damaged, with only 3 teeth remaining. Worse is that also the teeth on the camshaft are damaged.:( Does anyone knows what might have caused this?
The engine in my 5 is a C1J, with Gordini head.
Here is a video, what happened last week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwvlDQlU8Xg

Here are some more pictures.
The camshaft i'm using is from a Renault Alpine (Gordini) n/a, and the oil pump gear is std GTT.

No, oil is good. I use Castrol RS 10W60. The engine is only 1 year old and has done less than 700km.

just a thought, prob get shot down but, what rpm are you pulling ? could it be oils not returning quick enough leaving pump starved of oil, an a partial siezure of pump ?
somethings gotta give, teeth on the gear arnt overly strong

Max RPM is 7300. The oil pump is standard C1J. I was thinking on the line of the camshaft that has been bored out for cam bearings. Maybe it has not been done exacly at center or something? But it has been done by a remanufacturing company who do this regular.

what kinda rpm can these cars handle?

Does the gordini use a slightly different distributor drive gear? Its been ages since I had a look at any Gordini bits but I'm sure there was something different about them.

Maybe they are the same but you can only fit the drive gear beore the head is fitted to the block.

I've just had a look at your video. Im guessing a "Delco" is the distributor which you say is not in use.
You mention you are running EFI but have you left the distributor fitted? If not it needs to be otherwise there is room for movement in the gears between the camshaft and distributor drive gear, which may have caused your problem.

Yes, i had to take of the Gordini head. Now i wil dril the hole in the head bigger, so you can take the gear out without removing the cilinder head.

I have made an aluminium part with a thrust bearing at the end to keep the gear down at its place. I'l see if i can make a picture of it tomorrow.

why cant you take the gear out without drilling the block.

cos the gordini/turbo 2 head has a hole that is too small to drop the gear down after you fit the head.... just like i found out!

Does look like the gear and the cam have been not meshing correctly. Might be a good idea to run a distributor. Are you not using sequential fuel injection (cam postion sensor) ???

Yes, cam and gear are oem Renault.
No, i don't use a cam position sensor. Only at the crank pulley.

Here is a pic of this. The lower diameter of the hole is to small for the gear.
