What is the reason for having the most pertruding one at flywheel end?

How crucial is this to the new engine rebuild?

I didn't think that it mattered which way round that the liners were stepped, just that they are stepped one way or the other? That way you get the best equal clamping force down on the head gasket. If the liners aren't stepped and you have a liner with a lower protrusion, in-between two liners with higher protrusions then at best you are asking for the head gasket to blow across that cylinder or in a worse case scenario crack the head...

Def. worth getting a decent dial gauge or feeler gauges and spending some time getting this 110%.. will make for a longer lasting engine - not that id know :crap: LOL

just some feeler guages will do the job the same style as you would use to set your tappets.

yeah, unless you have the workshop tool that the Dial gauge fits in to measure the clearances then better off using feeler gauges and make sure you use a decent striaght edge, might be worth buying one from b&q or the like if you haven't got one.
