hi all, quick question. there is a little tag on the aei that usually has a earth type lead on it, the 208 i have in y car doesnt have it but im seem to remember fitting one changes somthing to do with the timing? or am i spouting bollocks? if so what does this lead do?

Little black plastic box that bolt to the AEI where the AEI bolts to the body? with a cream coloured wire with a connector attached to the AEI itself?

Thats the supressor my little tree-dwelling friend. Helps supress the interfearance caused by the HT leads.
Makes your neighbours TV's go fuzzy, innit.

Yes, and the suppressor isn't needed if you're not worried about signal interference.

Iginition timing etc innit. 208 was Ph1, 209 A, B, C and D being Phase 2. They tweaked the maps over time, thus the 'best' one is supposedly 209 D. That said, I've heard that version C hit the real mark and a 208 is simply better suited to a Phase 1. Who knows as the changes will affect a lot of parameters eh. :agree:

not much difference imo as I've been running a healthy 22psi with a 208 in situation for some time now and never had any issues.
209d runs the same ignition map as 'c', but reads the knock signal, and thus adjusts the timing accordingly, more efficiently (read linear) to knock level/boost pressure.
208 has a slightly less 'aggressive' map, and no knock control.

Not really, as there's no knock control.
As I've mentioned many a time over the years, I'd say that a fair majority of the 'big boost brigade' are running (and relying) on that knock sensor when at w.o.t, and it's only due to the sensor detecting det', and thus the aei then retarding the ignition accordingly, that's saving them a trip to GSF for another R11102.
You only have to look at a given RR print-out to see how much oscillation/spiky the graphs are to realise something's going on with the ignition.
I'll bet there's been less headgasket/liner/ringland failures on cars fitted with a knock sensor compared to those that haven't got one in situ.

Err, yeah. How many OE Ph1's have a knock sensor? ;)

My phase 2 has a 208 with a knock sensor attached before i threaded the knock sensor.:confused:

Sounds like it's previously been swapped over, as a ph2 from the factory should be running a 209 aei anyway.

Mine has only done 40 miles in 6 months. Probably one of the many reasons why it hasn't been healthy.:ashamed:

But would it of been fine that i received the car running 1 bar of boost and a standard carb on top of no knock sensor control?:ashamed:
It starts getting borderline around 1bar boost on standard carb jetting, so can't really say to be honest.
Have you heard any detonation at full boost, and/or suffered a gasket/liner/piston failure?

Seriously i ve only driven it 3 times doing a combined mileage of 40 miles! Engine was taken out at christmas. A supposed bottom end rebuild was purchased as a ebay special..........I know :( That was ****ed when put in car. So now rebuilding everything on the old bottom end! My renault 5 nightmare.:D
Anyway back to your question mart, when i stripped down my original bottom end, the bottom of on of the liners had cracked of and the bits had been bouncing round under 2 piston crowns. would detonation cause this?
Think the boost was too much for the rings aswell as oil was creaping past the rings on the 2 nearest the flywheel.
