this is regarding the car i use for taxi hire, its a 02 toyota avensis.

what areas should i be looking at to source the problems its having?
problem is that it will randomly start hunting! the revs will rise and fall between 500 and 1000 rpm.
sometimes its fine but more than often it does the above.

It will probably be a sensor, try coolant temp sensor...

how would a coolant temp sensor effect the idle and cause hunting:scratch:

vacum leaks

always a major player in hunting, or tps

check all vacum hoes and any spilts AFTER the afm in the inlet pipe

after that then itll be a dignosic check, think there moble guys that charge ?£40 for the first hour and 25 after , but with what can be said to be a simple problem could take less then a hour, but if theres no error codes your be lost even more,

check for air leaks, cracked pipes, that kind of thing.

have you had diagnostics on it ? is it throwing up any fault codes ?

not done a diagnostics check yet, was hoping to try sourcing the prob before spending money on it. also im assuming a buggered lambda sensor can cause this prob too?

you can use any OBD tool to have a look at it as its after 2000 and a petrol model. this should then tell you which area to start looking in.

this is the first thing i would check Raj!! lambda sensor is more than likely your problem!! :)

I'd check the idle control valve as well.
