My next bit of help i need is i dont have a fan switch.

gtt converted clio ...we completetly wired it manually as the looms didnt match up ..using aftermarket guages. Heres my question how would i go about wiring up a fan switch? ...im planning on making it manual so that it only works when i turn it on. :cool:

Im not too good with electrics so any help would be great!

Cheers :D

Any particular reason why you only want it working on a switch, because its very easy to forget about turning it on. Why not wire it up to the thermostat?

or just wire it from alternater to fan with 20amp fuse

then use the switch as a earth

The reason is because i did this build on a budget ...it has no thermostat :ashamed:. So its also good having a switch for peace of mind incase it does get a little too hot :laugh:

R5GTTRaider could you possibly list what 1,2,3,4 is?

again cheers for the quick reply folks :)

a 5 pin relay has 1 2 3 4 5 marked on it

but 5 isnt used

like i say i can make one for you. but if you have no water temp sender/switch then theres no point and preety foolish with a engine that runs as hot as a c1j

my engine bust a top hose after the belt snapped/came off.

im running no stat and i switch the fan on by passing the rad sender

and it sits just above the first line even if im boosting it only goes up a tad
so to be quite honest ive decided to run with no stat till it starts getting colder, and tbh thats 6/7 months away lol:wasntme:

so its a case of 20amp inline fuse ...power from alternator ...then wire the switch in with the ground wire? ...or is it wire the switch in the power wire?

Sorry for all the questions ..i aint too good with electrics if im honest :laugh:

1 = 30
2 = 85
3 = 86
4 = 87

Bass J

lol scoff ..i didnt understand any of that :laugh::laugh:

Think ill just run a power from alternator to a 20amp inline fuse then a wire to the fan ...then a wire from the fan to a ground with a switch as described above. See what happens :smokin:

Nice topic i was gonna hook of these up too after i check to see whether my low temp rad switch is working or not....Is there anyway of telling its duff apart from my fan not coming on when its supposed to.....

Scoff

well, 1 = 30 means that no.1 on raider's diagram corrisponds to pin 30 on a normal 5 pin relay. The relay's are marked with 30, 85, 86, 87 and 87a, standard wiring code.

ah scoff its a clio gtt conversion ...me and a mate wired up the engine manually. We arnt using the 5gtt loom ...just grabbing powers from the dashloom,using aftermarket guages etc . I just wondered how you wired a fan switch from scratch as i didnt have a loom :)

Scoff
18-04-2009, 15:45
no I mean every relay pretty much is marked with those numbers!! it isn't GTT specific ;)

so using raiders circuit and knowing what pin does what on a relay you can wire it properly with a rad switch. if you're just going to run a switch minus the relay then fair do's, but be sure to use heavy enough cable and a big switch capable of handling it without melting!

Ok will do :D Cheers for all your help people :agree:

Just to make sure ive made a diagramme ...is this right?

Im a total newb at this ...so please dont laugh :laugh:

no, that won't work :D

From + on alternator to one side of fuse.
From other side of fuse to + on rad fan.
From - on rad fan to one side of switch.
From other side of switch back to - on alternator.

Most toggle switches have 3 pins, be sure to use the middle on and either one of the outer ones. consider that your 2 switch contacts.

You need to earth the fan negative terminal.

R5GTTRaider

the relay i have is 1-5 but yes most relays are 30 87 etc etc the side of the relay shows you what numbers do what

R5GTTRaider

You need to earth the fan negative terminal.

at the moment i have a fan with a earth to a switch then then to car earth, works perfectly

Niceone people ..i totally understand now :)

But first i need to sort an oil leak and wire up the rest of my guages then the fan switch will come.

Its nearly time for my clio gtt to hit the roads :D:D:D

I thought i'd detail the switch pins since a lot toggle switches have 3 pins. I didn't see you had posted one.

Yuh, have fun with that in summer :rolleyes:

i was on a budget when building it as i didnt have a job at the time .... i will ofcourse get one before putting it back on the road as now have a job :)

Ive half wired it up ....need to get some more spade connecters from me mate tonight and i will do the rest tomorrow. Got my water,oil and boost guages wired up tho :D

i was messing about mate and yes your right,

tho get this with just earths, if a eart is connected to the 3rd pin on my switch it lights up :confused::confused:

im not a dumb ass with electrics but how does 2 minuis make a circiut to light up the led!!!!!!

because when you switch the fan off you have 12v on the non-earth side of the switch. current flows from the +ve of the alternator, through the fan and down to the switch. It only turns into an earth when your switch connects it TO earth :)

R5GTTRaider
18-04-2009, 22:07
slightly confussed but that was with it connected to the earth one side and earth to the fan side with no plus connected. positive is always connected last, have it ready to be connected but wire the earths up first etc,
:confused:

Well i tried above with the manual switch ...and the fan didnt kick :( ..does that mean its ell buggered? ..or is there a way of testing them?

Wire from battery to fan, and from fan to earth, if it works then you done something wrong elsewhere

All u need is a complete circuit with break and fuse in it for your switch!!!

I tried it again and it didnt work. So my mate who's awesome with cars turned up and got the fan working straight away. He just put the ground elsewhere other than alternator and it worked :cool:
