is there any harm in having two battarys hooked up, ethier the 2nd one in the drivers side or in the boot, as ill be running subs and speakers all round all run by there own amps ie front, back, sub wondering should i need a bigger alternator or will the oem one keep both charged, or will i run in to touble with having them both half charged and as good as a bigger one from say a 5 diesel?

get a split charge, like you'd use if you have a caravan

I just have a normal "063" i got 2amps 2 subs 4speakers and 2 tweeters running off that but i also have a powercap witch acts like a coil that stores a bit of power. Aslong as you dont have it wacked up from when you start driving it should still charge:agree:

this is what im thinking, at night if i have the music playing lights on etc then that meesly 14v is going to be runnign straight over the battary to the amps and head/tail lights,

whats split charging, having two wires of the alternator?

also the reason i ask is becasue my battary has suffered with just poor starting

which is another matter

finding it hard to start and that battary will go flat dead,(5-6 seconds cranking) but then some days will fire right up first ,second crank

i ran two batterys, both in scuttle area, one each side as it's already got a battery holder on the other side just need the bolt and bracket from a campus to hold it in place.

both batterys should ideally be the same, no need to upgrade alternator. just remember to fuse the wire at both ends, if it splits you'll have a positive feed from both batterys going to earth.

a split charger is a relay that goes in the positive wire between the two batterys, it stops the main battery from going flat when the engine isn't running and current is being drawn. split charger isn't needed unless you're planning on listening to music without the engine running and your stereo is wired direct live with no acc switch as you have to bear in mind that the split charge only stops draw from the main battery when ignition is off

ok maybe i should be more constructive and tell you that it may not be the sound system causing the starting issues. try disconnecting it and starting it as the same situation were you would normally have issues and see if the problem accurs.

how many amps can you run through a split charge? The wires look pretty thin.

Try cleaning up your earthing points, maybe adding and extra from the gearbox, it may help. Could be your battery is on it's last legs.

Not sure on the amp rating for split charge but they vary. Mine actually broke down as it was before the 180 amp trip fuse but that was in a competion set up

maybe i should have been more literate and put "i will be running"

I have no problems with having S*Club that loud, but I keep it to 35/40.
Got a bit of an OCD about having it land on a 5, ie 5, 10, 15 etc.

And in my old Campus I had all the amp and that on a switch so it wasn't being powered up all the time ;)
Just like this one

I prefer odd numbers, but really it doesn't bother me. For all those that have OCD and can only manage with even numbers, how do you manage driving a Renault 5? Don't you wish they called the 5 a 6?

back to topic again, my astra had two batterys as i killed to 2 fared power cap. i was running 4000rms and 8000peak sound system. I never really got the idea of a split charger though, i just ran 2 guage positive between batterys and put a hefty relay with a switch to the dash, had enough power to crank of either battery if one went flat then just wait til first is fully charged and swith the second oone back on to charge. it worked fine for me for 3 years until i took it all out and now use the second battery in the clio :)

Just put my 2 pence in :).

When I was out on the as a road mobile mechanic, the van had 2 batteries. This was so that one was exposed in the back door for jump started etc etc.

The Van run 160k miles with a standard alternator no problems.

Agree with the above though, they have to be the same spec.

As you can hold a bigger battery on the drivers side you might want to invest in one big quality battery?

just my thoughts though :p
