strange knock

driving tonight and the 5 has developed a strange knock under all braking, accelerating, coasting and steering
first thoughts were wheel bearing but there is no griding noise just knocking
but the knocking is not constant it comes in random bursts of say 10-20
any help would be gratefully appreciated

check your CV gaiter. there might be a small hole, or the grease has turned oily. you might have to regrease it to shut it up.
