I have just bebuilt the engine in my 5 and put it back on the road in the last week. It runs well and makes good oil pressure as previously discussed on here. However I installed a brand new turbo on Thursday. 80 miles later its totally f*cked. Loads of play in the shaft and smoking like a gud un. I have no reason to suspect the turbo was a duffer

I have no idea why this has happened and apart from the fact I feel like setting fire to the damn car, I have no idea what to do next, aside from the cost of getting my "new" turbo refurbed, i obviously dont want a repeat performance. So im after some advice please. I was supposed to be sprinting at Three Sisters next weekend which has now gone out the window and im really fed up with the bloody thing.

were are you taking the oil reading its best in the turbo oil feed line with a aftermarket guage. also are you using a inline filter to catch the swarf adam l is a good man to speak to regarding a turbo rebuild

Poor pressure to the turbo maybe, or another case like this one:

Im taking the reading from after the one way valve with a mechanical guage.

If your in an investigative mood you could strip the turbo and have a look at the bearings. scored journal bearings are easy to spot and are a sure sign of contamination. I killed 4 good turbo's within a year before I realised that having the engine in bits every other week wasn't doing them any favours. Those Baley turbo pre-filters are a god send! Amazing what crap they catch, even from a clean engine.

14 psi at idle and about 38 at 3k revs.

Thats with the oil at about 80degrees.

Hi scoff.

Thanks for your advice. I guesswhat im really trying to avoid is having it rebuilt only fot it to last another 80 miles.

So what do you think the best way forward is?

As richie says as a minimum. Look at those baley filters like I said above, they work wonders. I've used one for the past 4 years ish, and honestly have never had a smokey turbo in all that time. Before that I would do 4 turbo's in a year, always contamination because my engine was apart all the time.

Cheers fellas

Will get in touch with adam and see if he can sort it out. Hopefully not too much damage will have been done. :(

as scoff has previously mentioned...it will be swarf.

did you get any parts powder coated? - like the rocker cover - or shot blasted?

you'll find loads of sand hidden in the splash guard area of the rocker cover!

I didnt have anything powder coated.
I tried to keep everything spotless when I put it togther! I guess not spotless enough!

Is it likley to have done any damage to the mains and big ends?

I did a quick search for those bailey in line filters, but I could only find listings for T3 size and upwards. Im guessing the oil feed is bigger on these and hence it wont fit a T25 which is what I am ( was doh!) running.

i killed a brand new turbo in no time, turned out to be swarf in my oil, had the turbo rebuilt and done 3 engine flushes with oil. fitted a inline turbo oil filter and im still pulling out swarf. those inline filters work a treat as the turbo would have been trashed in no time without it.

Ben @ Hose solutions makes a braided oil feed pipe with an inline filter - give him a call. :)

Ive had this problem too, and would like to keep a eye on the oil pressure to the turbo, is the link below the best place to have you oil reading from ??

I have a T piece plumbed in below the on-way-valve. That way you can still keep the existing renault sender and hence the crap electric guage and oil light still work.
Guess its down to preference really.

they have a by pass valve that opens at some very low psi....

i just turned my OE one way valve on the turbo oil feed into a filter earlier on today. i took out the internal hex centred cap and put an aircon compressor filter guard in there. seems to look ok, better than nowt!
