View Full Version : Suspension Moving
Fitted Gaz coilovers on my phase 2 gt and after a hundred miles i could hear the offside front shock moving. So i removed it to check and the ball joint was not in place correctly, another 50 miles and the moving began again but the car was put in the garage for winter. So when i started preparations for the new season i bought some poly's for the top strut and new bearings and a refurb top strut from cgb. And all was well until another 100 miles and the moving began yet again. I'm running out of ideas now and would really appreciate some advice.

what's moving where?
So the balljoints are moving but you have replaced the donuts, am i missing something here? Do you mean knocking? Have you got the right pinch bolt in the hub for bottom balljoint.
Offside front shock, i can feel and hear it when driving, it's like it's rocking around.

The balljoints are not moving, they were replaced aswell, everything was checked for tightness.
How low have you set them, my springs move around a bit when driving as I have my coilovers set as low as possible which makes the springs loose when jacked up
Ill bet the actual damper is knocking. If its not bottomed out it will need a refurb. My avo's done the same after 5k miles from rebuild..
They're not set too low, i've done less than a 1000 miles on them, i just find it weird that it's only the offside that's knocking.
top nut on damper rod isn't working loose is it ?

I still don't know what's moving. Is it the strut inside the top mount? Is it the balljoint inside the hub, is it something else? Check every bolt again, I had the bolts that hold the balljoint to the wishbone come loose.

I hope not, it was threaded on then tightened with air gun, as i said earlier everything was checked, i'm gonna have a close inspection tomorrow and i'll report back with the findings.

It sounds as though the strut is moving inside the top mount.

I've seen a lot of worn hubs, once that happens you can't clamp the balljoint pin. I think it's 14mm, use a 14mm(?) drill bit to check that the hub hasn't worn oval or tapered, the sides should be parallel.

in that case maybe you've missed out something important, do you use PH1 or PH2 struts?
Ph2, it could be the setup, i'll maybe take some pics tomorrow and post them up if that helps. cheers guys.
Might be me being a div for not fully reading the thread, BUT
I had a similer prob a few years back, it turned out being the top hat looking thing had crumbled and everything was wiggling around on its own accord.
Prob the most unhelpful post yet but ohh well

They were checked and were ok, so i'll see what happens when i look at it tomorrow.

i had a similar prob, with gaz coilovers and poly donuts too..
steering always felt a bit funny, and with the strut covers off the suspension had a bit of play when turning the wheel.
in the end i turned the donuts upsidedown and they were fine?!? maybe mine were dodgy because i assumed that they were same top and bottom

I'm sure they are the same either side
Ok so a week later and i finally got round to getting the suspension off to check it, well i took off the wheels and pulled on the shock and the spring is moving at the top. Took off the shock for a closer inspection and it seems the bearing is moving up and down, not sure if it's meant to do this. Here are some pics as i'm running out of ideas.

Anyone know why a bearing would wiggle about slightly, this looks to be the problem!
