The 5 has been sat in a garage for a couple of years, i changed the oil, put fresh petrol in and checked everything over at the wekend.

Had a few problems

- Had to bump it off to get it running as it wouldnt fire up (was a new battery fitted)
- Will only run with the choke on (even after its warm)

Took it down the lane a couple of times, checked it over for leaks or any visual damage turned it off.

Next morning it wouldnt start again, obv the carb will need a clean but is there anything else anyone can think off :)

cheers!

If it's been sat few a few years clean/replace the plugs, check all the ht leads at the connections for any corrosion, make sure the coolant system is bled and topped up and it might be worth giving the brakes and lines a once over. :)

Hi Hez.

Welcome to the club mate.

Mine had been stood for a couple of years. ( errr 9 in dry storage) before I got my hands on it.
The rear brakes suffered the most. Calipers and cables seized. Make sure everything is A1 and freed off. I put new calipers and cables on mine as they were beyond salvage.

Thorough carb clean and mixure/idle screw set-up will probably sort your idle probs. :)

Update -

Manage to refurb the carb and she started straight up, only to cut out 20minutes later.

Took the carb to bits again checked everything but still no joy. took the fuel pump off and tested it on a battery, but it just kept jamming so tried the terminals the other way and she worked. tried them back the right way and she was pumping!!

Put the pump back on changed the filter and she's been right ever since :)

Cheers for all your help and advice guys!

M.O.T tomorrow!

My white gtt is in a million bits mate, started restoring it but got distracted with the van:laugh:

Bogg brothers are supposed to be ok, Never used them myself though. Buy yourself a wideband afr gauge & have a crack at setting it up:)

A good thing to do is to fill up with some decent fuel as the old fuel may not be at its greatest and you will want to flush it all out.

i have the same prob, when u say refurb the carb did you clean it out or replace the seals and gaskets? if its a caser of cleaning out thats easy, i have to have half choke and pump the throttle like mad till it starts, usserly like 6-10 seconds:eek:

thats normal thats why the put the perc fan in situ to try and stop the fuel evapourating within the carb.

so whats the best way to start one ? my perc fan dosnt work so removed it. any way of having a electric pump on ignition? or is that not work till the engine is cranking?

edit:
posted a qestion to the wiz and he says ,

"Wizard replies:
try cleaning out the accelerator pump jet. its the little bent brass thing that squirts fuel down the venturi. or makin sure the accelerator pump itself is crud free."

would this solve my problem? im not qestioning him im just wondering if taking the top of to reval the bowl and make sure the jets are clean and this brass tube etc. and proceed to fitting the nw fuel filter i keep meaning to put on! would this make much diffrence or am i wasting time and maybe disturbing a otherwise working carb?
