Has the yellow wire on top of the alternator got 12v when the engine is running. Also are the 2 wires (yellow and purple) the right way round, its very easy to get them the wrong way round.
yellow usually closer to the engine?

Check the earth that goes to the front of the block. Exposed to all kinds of cr@p. Mine had correded causing a similar problem. Once I started handling it it just fell apart.

Get your jack out and get the drivers side front wheel up and off, next take your torch and take a look at the back of the starter motor, there should be 3 wires going to it, 1 is a small grey or black wire, this should be connected on its own, 2 should be a thick black or grey wire connected with a ring connector along with the third wire which should be red.
I'll bet that either wire 2 or 3 has broken off or has touched the downpipe and has burnt out, fix it and you'll be fine
all sorted guys, wiring loom has seen better days, but managed to sort it.
I have a loom for sale if you need one. Not Cut.
