Ok so just a post to list what games spurred many hours of fun for you as a kid.

My first major strategy game had to be warcraft 1, loved this game and played all sequals on day of release.

http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/all/real_time/screens/warcraft1.jpg
Another amazing game had to be Little Big Adventure 2, loved this game , crazy ideas and great scenes.

http://medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/screenshot_5945_thumb300.jpg

And last but not lease the Discworld Point and click series taken from the books wrote by terry pratchett. Again crazy imagination into the game, humor and great visuals

great wepons, great characters, and excellant levels! even the storyline for the game was great!!

One of the first games apart from Sonic the hedgehog was arrow flash

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e8/Arrow_Flash.jpg

I got it on my birthday when I was 8 years old and completed it that day, only took me 6 hours to do so. Just couldn't put the controller down

Other great game was Rock n Roll racing

http://nibtempfile.ign.com/mbozon/article/699360/Banner%20Complete%20Rock%20N%20Roll%20Racing.jpg

Downloaded that whilst at uni and played on an emulator :D brought back lots of memories :)

My Fav game on my old 386 comp was
http://www.pu.nl/userfiles//Police_quest_1_agi.png

Police quest, so basic & yet so good... still play it today... on my old Pentium 126 ;-) still works with Windows 95 & the games are on CD(8x speed) or Floppy disc's.

That comp cost £1899 in 1996, We still have the reciept for it!

Also another great game i go into when i was about 12 or so was Lesiure suite Larry....
http://ui24.gamespot.com/2167/lsl6boxart_2.jpg

I have all the LSL game's :-)

Is it me or did Sierra make some of the best & basic PC games!

Discworld, I remember that!

Other games I played a lot on the old Amiga 500 were things like Frogger and Newzealand Story (I think that's it, the one where you rescue the Kiwi bird)

I actually bought a SNES from eBay last year with about 15 games, including Super Mario and Mario Kart :D

If you can get along with settign up a piece of software, then do a quick search for a program called dos box. Using that you can emulate a dos enviroment and play old games etc. Just takes a fair bit of setting up, there are a few graphic based interfaces though.

my first stratergy game was settlers! man that was an oldy but a goody, also of course cant forget that the city planning magic of sim city, or the godlike powers obtained through playing civilisation! some real classics

Cant get better then a bit of 007 on the N64 or some hardcore Zelda and the Ocarina of time man some coool games from back in the day

Command and conquer another classic or even its fore runner Dune (cant remember if it was Dune or Dune 2 but it was the stratergy game not the puzzle thinker)

And another classic but i can remember the name of the damn game but it was a haunted house full of puzzles and all i can remember is the answer to one game and it was the one where you arranged tin cans on a shelf to make a little poem of sorts to get past that room the answer was "shy gypsy shyly spryly twyst by my crypt" no vowels in it made it a tough one

Awesome game. Play in the morn b4 breakfast, leave the megadrive on all day whilst at school, get home, realise ya mums turned it off, even though you hid it and turned the telly off. Cry. Go out side and set fire to action force figures. Line them up on fence, shoot them with air rifle. Set fire to fence. Get sent to room. Start Toejam and earl all over again.

I used to love the old acorn stuff, I remember them being the latest technology in my school. It took me and a friend about 2 weeks to hack the lot of it resulting in us being banned for 1 year from the newly formed "IT" department. It was also the first contact I had with any kind of networking, econet! games were pretty basic too - elite being about the best :)

Keep hold of that BBC :)

The Acorn was out at the same time as the Master but was marketed as a bit more of a noddy/gamer/home/cheaper slightly less capable machine.

Sphinx Adventure was a terrible example of the standard Acorn fare - You go into the pyramid, do you want to turn right or left? Left. You are killed by a mummy and have to start again. You go into the pyramid, do you want to turn right or left? Right. You see a switch and a door. Do you want to flick the switch or try the door handle. Try the door handle. The door is locked, do you want to knock on the door or try the handle again? Try the handle again. The handle comes away in your hand and water fills the room and you drown. Do you want to start again or put the game in the bin? Put the game in the bin.

Me neither, I remember it being something to do with econet station 254 and obtaining the IT teachers login. Once you were able to login as the teacher you could copy his admin programs to disc, or if you were brave your own login account. 5.25" floppy discs were passed around covertly amongst the IT-crowd like contraband :D There was an admin utility called remote, enabled you to pop up any message you like on any other machine. We did that at college on a windows 3.1 system in 1994. Teachers got sent some dodgy messages and it was all over :wasntme: What actually happened was that you had to specify who you wanted to send to. Someone made a mistake and it went to every single PC that was logged in at the time. Went something like: Mr Wood, I didn't complete my coursework, don't tell Mr Whitely. Oh f*ck. We went to my Whitely's office that was locked and could see the message on his screen. We laughed for days.

Sega Rally 1 is still the best driving sim.

Damn straight. I always get on it at Ace Cafe, I'd love to have arcade machines at home.

sega rally baddest rally game ever, even tho it only had 4 tracks it still is king today!

reminds me of college when they had the arcade machine in the canteen and everyday we and some other guy were trading best times and pretty soon our names had covered the scoreboard, i never did see or meet him tho but i did leave college with my name still at the top of the leaderboard :)

I haven't done much emulation lately been busy with other stuff but the ones I run are:
MAME
Nester
P64
nes9x
Gens
Various master system ones
Sega model 2 emulator - as MAME is unable to play Daytona usa and the like
WINUAE

There are probably some new better emulators out at the minute I don't know, like I said it has been a while.
