Can anyone confirm which way to adjust the brake bias to increase the amount of rear braking? I think i've got it right but it seems to work the opposite way to how I expeted??

Cheers Ahy

if its the standard on by the rear beam then tighten the nut to pull on the adjuster which gives more braking to rear wheels (as per more heavily loaded car) slacken the thing off to reduce braking at the back.

when the car goes lower then do you tigten up the bolt ?

Yup, wang it up as much as poss to give full braking on the rear

winding it up full is asking for trouble, you don't want the back end locking up, I know people who've done it and it doesn't make for pretty handling!

when you lower a car you need to loosen it, not tighten it, in order to get back to the braking you had before.

WOW! Never experienced that before, mine is adjusted to the max with new calipers, discs and pads and cant get the rear to lock up (not that i would want too)

Definately loosen it !! Mine was set on max (for some unknown reason) with a 35mm drop all round and the back end would lock up all the time. 10mm loosens the locknut and 8mm does the adjustment screw :)

thats what i thought!! however after fitting the new bias valve I havent had chance to adjust it. When I've been out testing the fronts would lock up and it didnt feel like the backs were doing much. I checked it today and found that it was wound all the way in, so I've slackened it off to anout half way in between fully in and fully out. The brakes have been transformed, they work perfectly and bring the car to stop in an instand without locking up.

Wonder if it gets to a point where its too far in and they do nothing?

Cheers Anyway.

I thought this was a sarcastic comment to start with and it made me laugh. Then I realised it was serious and I nearly shat my pants. Lol. :wasntme:

 Its what i got told and what my car came set up like, i've gotta sort mine out now. The things you learn on here :agree:

LOL full of optimism ;)! No it works fine, i think bleeding the brakes the other day it stop the fluid when it was fully extended and when i pulled it together fluid was flowing!

The bias valves that are fitted is it a 2coil one or a 4coil one? There seems to be a choice?

You've just got to be careful when offering advice like this. Normally, lowered cars that have not had correct adjustment on the brake bias become very dodgy under hard braking. The back end goes very light. This is messing with people's safety. If you aren't an expert on something that's important to safety then don't give advice on it.

Ash, adjust the bias valve so that you are just, and I mean just, able to rotate the rear wheels when you have the car in the air with the handbrake ON.

Its hard to describe but you'll know what I mean when you adjust it.

I'd do it for you but you're a few miles away :wasntme:

This was something The Master advised me on along while back...

Absolutely right & i wouldnt have made it up. I was merely passing on information that i had received.

The Master set up the rear brake bias on yours Spooky when i had it, done it a la threaded rod so it's adjustable

how does the bias affect the hand brake ?

how does the bias affect the hand brake ?

i was gonna say that too but didn't wanna launch the fail boat... lol

surely it should be with an 'assistant' on the footbrake instead

were are you jacking the car up at ? which point ? when doing this spooky or master

Is it that you jack the car, rather than jack under the torsion bar.

so when lowered the torsion bar adjusts the compansator to suit safe braking on rear brakes ? and enough on hand brake ??

do revel the trick to set correct :) always wondered exactley how it works :smokin:

absolutly agrea with you there TREV . even i dont post on a subject like this if im even slightly usure

The Master set up the rear brake bias on yours Spooky when i had it, done it a la threaded rod so it's adjustable
the hand brake should be adjusted to max performace . the way to do it is totaly have slack in the cables pump the brake pedal at least 20 times and take it for a drive get the rear pads propperly bed in then the cables can be adjusted . all that needs to be done now is tyake up the slack on the cables so you have about 11 clicks on the hand brake . setting up the hand brake is easy if you follow the above steaps
setting up the rear brakes is another story , but the hand brake needs to be set up propperly first
:)

ok to set up your rear brake bias
im gonna put a disclamer in cos if you get this wrong it isnt my fault this is only advise because every driver and every car is differnt

wot i like to do is remove the bar that ataches the limmiter to the axle but refit it with a threaded bar to a fixed point on the body (warning this removes the load adujustment to the rear)(so if you have a sigle use to your five this mod is ok but if you carry different loads keep the rod to the axle)

from the limiter get a threaded bar and mount it on to the body b&q do threaded bar ;)
now to adjust
very simple
get a friend to push on the foot brake as hard as your friend can and see if you can rotate the rear wheel if the rear wheel rotates shorten the threadded bar a bit and try again . keep going till you find a point where you can just about turn the wheel with full brakes on . you finding a point were you can just about move the wheel without locking. then try on the road very carfuly braking hard . if your rears lock to easy length the threadded rod
but please be carful :agree:

cheers colin am going to reset my brakes , using advice. i just set and then tested in a safe area. and adjusted to were i fort was right/safe. :sad2: i do have commen sence tho and am quite compedent in working things out and relise the dangers of fixing brakes ;)

rightly said, if not sure, get good advise and be sure you understand what your doing or dont mess. risk assesment on fixing brakes is a must for arcticles section :)
