Hi people,

Thought I'd start one of these on this site, as I'll soon be officially a Renault turbo owner!

This is the car a couple of years ago (at Uni), pretty similar to how it was when I took it off the road.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/cleanishcar0046wo.jpg

However the car hadn't moved for a while whilst been in the garage, check out this all you detailing peeps!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0527.jpg

So started with the obligatory stripping of the interior.

All door cards out, doors off, bonnet off.

Few pics

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0525.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0532.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0533.jpg

I'd been having problems with my fuse box, since I'd taken it to pieces to sort some wiring out, so I made bracket to keep it out of the foot well a little more.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0528.jpg

I then cut dash in half and cut all the ribbing out of the back of it, so it was just a shell.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0529.jpg

Then I went and collected one of my ebay bargains.

ta dar!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00067.jpg

So then I had to take this out.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00070.jpg

Couple of hours and a few swear words later this was out.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00078.jpg

And the shell was looking like this.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00080.jpg

Gearbox and engine came out as one but then were split to sell.

JC5 box from 172 up for grabs pm me if interested.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00079.jpg

Engine bay was absolutely filthy as it wasn't cleaned for a good 9 months, quick jet wash with some degreaser and it was looking a lot better.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00077.jpg

You can actually see the colour of the subframe and power steering pipes lol

Last thing I did was tuck it back away in the garage, with the engine crane and sheet of 6mm steel plate I'd bought for making the alternator bracket and power steering pump.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00085.jpg

It will be a good couple of weeks if not months until I'm able to get over to it again.

So progress will be slow, but I'll keep you updated with purchases I make as I have quite a large shopping list

Now I told you all progress was going to be slow, so here's my next update.

I managed to get a few quick pics before I left last night.

New purchases, that have arrived:

One rather large NDO gerabox, seen hear half in situ

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/BIGASSGEARBOX-1.jpg

Drive shafts and hubs with discs, discs need a quick clean up asthey've been stood for 9 months!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/NSSHAFT.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/OSSHAFT.jpg

I literally just dropped the engine in, to see where it was catching.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/TRIALFIT.jpg

I've still not taken out the old drive shafts from the JC5 box so its catching a bit there. Looks like it going to be pretty close to the steering rack too.

But gearbox clearance wise it seems ok.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/GEARBOXCLEARANCE.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/GERABOXCLEARANCE2.jpg

Its catching a tiny bit on the front sub frame member but hopefully when its on the top engine mount(which I've just found one on ebay and bought it now!), it should clear.

My other purchase that hasn't arrived yet it this:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/CLUTCHPEDAL.gif

Floor mounted hydraulic clutch pedal as the NDO box is hydraulic and not cable driven, the linkage is also cable driven and not rod, which should be fun!

Next task is to get a top gearbox mount made and get the engine mounted in properly.

Cheers

Gaz

I've done a bit of work on the car today.

Managed to get the old drive shafts out, remove quick shift and rod change, remove rest of exhaust down pipe.

And oh yeah get the engine sitting on all three mounts!

It fits haha!!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00126.jpg

Gearbox mount is a mix of 225 and jc5 mount used together.
Only had to cut a very small piece of chassis out 1x2 inch, which is just under the mount, then just reinforced it from behind.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00128.jpg

Top engine mount is F7R bottom rubber mount type and f4r mount from most new renaults.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00129.jpg

Dog bone mount is a 225 mount and some box section made up to mount to the original mount. No pics unfortunately!

Here it is with the bumper still undecided on the splitter but i need a deep bumper to house a large intercooler!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00124.jpg

Next on the list is adapting the throttle body mount to take a F7R cable type.

Getting the drive shafts measured and butchered.

Got a turbo and manifold on its way from a breakers.

Shopping list includes, OMEX600, cable change mechanism and gear lever assembly, intercooler and pipe work. And the rest..

Comments and suggestions welcome as always :)

About time i put some pics up of what I've done a couple of weekends ago!

Made the brackets to use my F7R alternator and power steering pump.

The pic looks like they don't line up perfectly, but thee is room for movement as it's not bolted together tight.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00137.jpg

Managed to get the turbo and manifold on, its a really tight fit getting it on.

But once its on there's a fair bit of room.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00135.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00140.jpg

Depending on how big the down pipe is its looks like I might have to lose a bit of the scuttle tray/bulk head.

Luckily K-tec have just released a de-cat pipe for the 225 as the cat is usually in the down pipe.

Then its just a case of getting a short piece made up to mate to my own system.

I've been having some wishbones played with with different ball joints.

So it looks as if i might be needing a wide arch kit as well, as I may be going with the 225's wider track and full drive shaft assembly.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00144.jpg

I'm going over again this weekend to start prepping the shell properly and taking the engine out, now I know it fits.

So I'm preparing my self to be breathing in Monaco blue dust for while!

That's all for now!

Right then I'll start with downpipe idea.

Here you can see how the F7R downpipe exits the bay.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo00077.jpg

Its Goes underneath the steering rack.

If you look at scotty's bay, you can see it exits above the steering rack higher up.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/phase2downpipe.jpg

And her is where the downpipe goes from the cat on a 225, so should be pretty easy to sort the exhaust looking from these pictures.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/RSEngine-1.jpg

So engine was back out again, here it is just ready to go back in to get the rear mount sorted. You can also see the alternator and power steering pump attached to the engine, but that will be changing as I'm ditching the power steering and going hard core all out manual! haha

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0591.jpg

You can see in that picture that its well and truly day light, here's what it was like when I finished doing the mount as it was harder than expected as the mount from the 225 and f7r are completely different, and on opposite sides of the engine!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0593.jpg

Managed to make a start on the interior by getting a few coats of primer down, interior will be staying white, but unsure whether to stay with the primer as its a decentish finish and a little grippier.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0589.jpg

As said previously I got the ns coilover on and was pretty disappointed as i out it on without the engine in the bay, until i dropped the engine in then it was low, very low!, but didn't get any pics!

So I left it like this with the inlet manifold off as I've brought that home get the throttle body fitted properly.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0594.jpg

That's all for now, but 'm having 10 days off in Feb for the sole purpose of just working on the car, so should have some serious progress pretty soon!

Exhaust mid pipe arrived today, I'm surprised at the size of the bore for a standard exhaust shouldn't be a problem mating it to mine.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo0055.jpg

Bend looks like its in the right place and may not even need modifying, but I'll wait until I get it up against the car.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo0057.jpg

Collecting something else for the car on Sunday, which is a bit of a funny thing and a bit unusual for this stage of a project, but all will be revealed.

Been to Rochdale today to pick up my newest part for the conversion.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo0058.jpg

Found another gearbox on the bay, so thought why not!

Its always handy to a spare lying around as I tend to go through gearbox's quite often!

That's it for the moment.

Gaz, do me a favour and do a little diagram of how you have/are piping up the cooling system. Have you removed the blocked off outlet on the stat housing and piped it to the expansion tank??? Im having cooling issues and had to drill the stat to get circulation round the clio 172 rad im using. Not sure why im having this trouble as it seems piped up correctly.

Gaz2405
07-03-2009, 19:45
I've removed the blocked of inlet and used that to go up to the expansion tank, it's a similar set up in the k4m (1.6 16v) as the water pumps look the same and possible are but I haven't checked part numbers yet on Dialogys.

I've used all F7R pipe work apart from the top rad hose and I'm using a k4m one for that.

I went round a scrap yard and took a load of hoses from some different renaults to see what fitted. Came back with this lot for a tenner.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/IMG_0628.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/P1030107.jpg

You can see set up on the k4m here, and is very similar to the F4R Series.

Got some goodies today.

Yes mate going to go for adaptronic, spent ages going through its foum and it had some relly good feedback, plus I know it can work on the 225 engine as you're running it.

Plus if i get stuck on the install there seems to be some expert knowledge on here ;)

Right been working on the car today and yesterday.

I've managed to fit the seats, respray the car and engine bay in its new colour!

Yeah been a while for an update on this. Gaz did you cross reference the water pumps in diolagys?

Gaz2405
21-06-2009, 22:03
Not mNged to xroa ref the pumps as I don't have dialgys anymore as my old lappy messed up.

Progress has been painfully slow.

Quick little update, bought a couple of things from the bay of e!

7 push button steel switches, 3 x carbon effect toggle switches, A3 sheet of 1.5 Carbon fibre, 2 x carbon effect sheet 1.6m x 1.2m.

Started remodelling the centre console to fit all the switches in and have the design for my door cards in my head.

I'll put some pics up when stuff starts arriving.

Managed to get hold of an internal fuse box from a breakers this monring as well for £15.

Buttons are for windows boot popper and door solenoids.
Dash is just a template at the moment and will be carbon once complete, also starting to shape the hole from the phase2 airbag slot to mount three gauges.
Just screwed in temp for time being but will be bonded in when done all nice and neat.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo023.jpg
and quick one of new fuse box.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo024.jpg

Decided to go with a ali plate for the switches and stuff instead of carbon, started to trial fit where the gauge pod will go aswell.
I've used a LHD a pillar gauge pod as its sets the gauges at a better angle than RHD one.
Had to reshape the bottom part of the dash using a heat gun and took about 2 inches out of the circumference of the curve, just needs a skim with some fibreglass.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/Photo032.jpg
Stared working on the adapter plate for the throttle body, just about done, just needs matching up and polishing, got no pics of that yet sorry.
Just on the search for a f4r flkywheel at the minute as i tried turning mine over with an F7R one and its was just too small, so I've been told by a reliable source that the 172 flys fit the 225 engine. Only time will tell!

Thats it for the time being, prop looking at april 2010 for finishing.

Matt Cole

F7r TB now sits on perfect and just needs finishing and polishing off inside.

Not much metal left from the plenium, might have to get it carbon wrapped for strength.

Driving this has given me the drive to get mine sorted.

So I've been on a massive parts ordering binge.

Ive decided to go with a clio 172 ecu and use the turbo map from rstuning.

Ordered/won on ebay today. 172 ECU, clio engine loom, interior loom, clocks/speedos, new lowering springs and front shocks, coil pack and leads, clio 172 throttle body, Megane f1 clutch and flywheel.

Started a new job so no more working weekends now so should be able to work on the car most weekends (misses permitting!)

Also looking for a cheap a frame/car transporter to tow it with the Other Megane.

Lovely megane chief. Did you give much for it??

11-10-2009, 09:58
Gaz, not wanting to put a dampner on things but can you get a tow bar for a 225 meg?

I know on the rating plate of my 182 it says zero. As the twin exit exhausts make it impossible to fit.

If it was me now that you've got a 225 I'd spend the money tuning that instead of the coupe.

Both looking good though.

Gaz2405
11-10-2009, 11:32
Paid exactly 10k for it however, its not the 225 petrol version.

Its the lesser known 175 DCI, so towing won't be a problem with 360NM torque standard. Stage 1 rempas show 200+bhp and 400+NM

Renault do a removable bar for it, according to my local dealer and owners manual.

Don't really want to playa round with the new one though as I use it for work.

I'd rather tune the 225 engine in a much lighter car.

SP33DY
11-10-2009, 12:10
Sorry mate, I just saw the 18 inch meg sport alloys, brembos, recaros and just assumed it was a 225.

I didn't realise that the dci came with all the above.

But a v nice car, and as it's not the 225 disregard my previous comments and get the coupe finished :)

whats the reason behind using the 172 ecu and not using the omex 600 ?

Gaz2405
15-10-2009, 22:09
Target to getting it finished, well there isn't really one its just asap really but fnds depending.

Matt, there's no play in it at all came from a car with under 10k on the clock, I was going to hold out and wait for someone to make a solid fluwheel, but i got impatient.

Decided to go for a 172 ecu for a few reasons, can pick them up really cheap (£30), Paul at rstuning can map them through the ODB for turbo and supercharged applications and get awesome results (he's only 10 miles away too!). Unlocking them is under £100, plus I can get the car running NA as it were with the boost pipes disconnected on the standard 172 map well (roughly running anyway)

I just want to get it sorted as soon as possible now and in the future I may well go stand alone.

Gaz2405

Yeah phase 1 and cable throttle, may have to drill and tap the plenum for icv, but I'll cross that bridge when i get to it.

Right been working on it this weekend, no pictures as i didn't get off to a good start, so i didn't trust myself holding the camera for fear of throwing it through the windscreen.

First job was to take of f7r flywheel and put on the dual mass one, this is where my problems started! The dual mass fly has slightly smaller heads on the bolts, but it didn't get supplied with them!! arrgghhhhh! So that job was out of the window.

Second job, sorting an icv out, made a bracket to mount it, and plumbed it all in, easiest job of the lot just drilled and tap'd the plenum.

Then onto the easy task of fitting the decat, offered it up, thought this doesn't look right. Out came the grinder, to take off a slightly large lug on the manifold that was fouling the decat, once that was off fitted like a glove!

Whipped of the old struts (going off to get reconn'd with diff springs) and whacked the ones from brucie on with some new gmax 40mm springs.

Got some help from the misses, so got her to prep and spray the gearbox and some other engine bits in hammerite smooth silver. She loves playing with cars really!

Once everything had dried, slung the engine into the bay to check for clearance with the decat.

Low and behold, it was ****ing catching on the brake cylinder! That was awesome thought all my christmases had come at once!

So thats going to need sorting next time! Can't wait.

So started on the loom, took at quick look at it and thought, there seems to be a few sensors missing of that?! Brilliant!

So spent the rest of the afternoon today tracing back the loom from the ECU using the pin out diagram and soldering on new connectors where they were needed.

So next time, I'm going to have to whip the engine out AGAIN!!! to sort the flywheel and clutch and hopefully my decoded ecu will be back by then so fingerscrossed it could be turning over next time. Although knowing my luck it will probably be seized!

Quick update on parts, just bought another TD04 14T turbo for it so it can go away and get reworked with bigger wheels.

Right had a full morning on it today.

Things are starting to get tight in the engine bay now, as with the deact pipe on and the engine ounted on all three mounts, I'm about 5mm away from the brake master cylinder. So I'll be having a look at solutions for that next time. I may have to play around with the thrid mount to pull the ceact away from it, or look at using a remote brake servo and diff pedal box.

Welded up the holes in the steering rack as I'm going manual not assisted, may look into trying to use a clio manual rack.

Started tidying up the loom and getting rid of any stuff not needed.

Also made a bracket to fit the idler pulley I had bought for an MX5, the tension on the aux belt will now be adjusted by moving the alternator.

Tomorrow I'm going to swing the engine back in check al the clearances are ok, then i need to order a few things from renault, new turbo oil drain pipe, some clutch parts and few nuts and bolts.

Swung the engine back in this morning, it would seem that the master cylinder was taking quite a bit of the weight of the engine. So thats come out!

Looks like I'll need to use a universal 3 in 1 floor mounted pedal box and go unservoed on the brakes and use a bias bar instead.

Once the engine was in though, I came across another problem. It is a very very tight fit for the exhaust once its mounted to the de cat pipe.

So instead of having a full exhaust made up, I've cut away the existing exhaust tunnel upto the gear lever mount.

So next time I'm over I#'ll be putting my welding skills to the test and making a new exhaust tunnel, the gear lever hole needs plating up anyway as I've decided to run the changing mech inside the car away from any heat.

Ill be making a new rear mount next time as well, that goes across the subframe similar to a lower strut brace and bolting the rear mount to that, unsure whether to use a rubber mount or go solid.

So jobs for next time are.

1. Exhaust tunnel.
2. Rear mount
3. Plate up servo hole
4. Fit new pedal box
5. Fit clutch and plumb up the hydraulics for it.

That'll do for now I think!

But overall had a fairly decent two days on it and got back into it again.

Last time I worked on the car spent most of the time measuring the engine bay for boost pipes.

I've had a load of silicone hoses delivered aswell but can't be bothered getting them all out of the garage to take pictures.

Drivers seat, gear lever, hand brake and steering wheels are all being moved backwards 8-10 inches to accomodate the floor mounted pedal box and also to even out the weight distribution a bit better.

Right then its update time!

Had a fullish 1 1/2 days on it.

Managed to get done most things I wanted to do.

Got the misses on with the job of sanding down my headlights and front grills.

After she'd done that she sanded down the front inner archers treated them with rust preventer and the waxoyled them.

Whilst she was doing that I started the task of moving the hand brake back 6 inches, probably the easiest job on the car to date! Once I'd moved that back I then moved the gear lever back six inches and the seat all the way back. (all this for a bloody floor mounted pedal box!)

Once the arches had dried it was coilover time, got them on no problem the rear shocks where a bit of a ball though!, then it was new wheels time!
Car is now sitting very low, with plenty of thread left on them.

New brake discs on, whilst the wheels were off I took all of the brakes calipers off and I've brought those home to rebuild.

Also managed to fit in a quick oil change and bleed the clutch through properly.
Couple of pics of how I left it.

Got a load of wiring to be getting on with, as I'm getting rid of the standard renault loom altogether and doing my own, so I'm up to my eyes in relays and fuses at the moment!

Been doing some wiring this weekend.

Worked out all the pin outs for the indicator and wiper stalks.

Started of working out pin outs and ins for the speedo, got most of them and then decided, I wanted to go down the LCD speedo route.

Stripped back the interior loom to the bare bones.

All the wiring is in and routed round the back of the dash for the electric windows, doors solenoids, boot solenoids, central locking, interior blower, fuel pump and starter button.

Wiring also in from the stalk control and routed down to where standard fuse box used to be.

Well here's the dash as it stands at the minute.

I was getting fed up of it moving around so I decided to screw it to the cupboard.

Starter off by sanding down some of the fibreglass and adding some additional fibreglass to the back of the gauge pods to hold them in place better.

And one off my new spanners for track days.

There's still quite a bit to do, biggest pain is that the car is 90 miles away so I can't work on little things during in the week, so when I do work on it I've got to do all niggley things to it first. As well as trying to remeber what I did last ime on it!

Got the dash sprayed tonight in a textured primer (tester) that I'm using next up will be the finsh colour which I'll try and get done this weekend.

speed warning
Top speed record
Shift light
Pre-Shift Light
Max rpm record
water and oil temp
over heating warning light
Fuel level reading

I got it from digital-speedos.co.uk, was just over £200, there's a couple of different versions you can get.

They are originally designed for ATV and motorbike use, but carbuildersolutions have started selling them as they are SVA approved, but they sell them at £280 plus vat.

Right I'll start with the sunroof.

Then I added another two either side.

The took my perspex that I 'd spent what felt like years shaping! and tried it for size.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/SDC11274.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/SDC11273.jpg

Then I sealed it into place, and thats where it all went tits up for a bit with the sikaflex.

Anyway I sorted that out the next morning by sanding down the excess.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/SDC11276.jpg

If i were to do it again I'd not be a nob and forget to mask up and seal it tkaing my time. But anyway its in now and it does its job it keeps the water out.

I'm just going to spray it Matt black or possible spray the roof matt black and the sunrrof gloss.

Next up was dashboard and carpet.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/Gaz2405/SDC11267.jpg

Engine bay shot.

Started on some of the interior wiring, I've got the passenger door popper working from the wing mirror and from the button on the centr part of the dash.

I've brought the ECU home so I can check that the next cable i get works properly, with a bench test.

Looking good Gaz, that pic with all the crap in front of it just reminds me of what I'm faced with everytime I open the garage to work on my clio  I really need to get it finished.

I pm'd Gaz about this recently and he said the location of reverse is different, sure it was up and far left with the 225 and right and down on the laguna.

Yeah as Speedy said the reverse was the wrong way round.

No updates on it at the moment haven't touched it since the last update, really need to pull my finger out tbh
