View Full Version : Thoughts for this year's F1 championship?
With only 4 weekends now to go, personally, I can't wait for it all to kick off again. Hoping that all new the rules & reg's will add some more excitement to the proceedings.
Hamilton defending his crown, F1 back on BBC (no fecking adverts, thank god), Murray Walker's making a come-back (and why hasn't he been knighted yet?), and it's been confirmed the BBC are gonna re-use Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' as the intro tune.
WIN!

In fairness to Ferrari though, Hamilton WAS fecking lucky to pull that out the bag on the closing lap(s), but hey, that's old news, and it's all about this season now.

there's a bit more to it that dropping a block of lithium into the tank and proclaiming the job a goodun

sourcing the parts locally would be a similar level of challenge to building the engine out of locally sourced parts - so no :wasntme:

Looks like the ex-Honda team will make a return. Button and either Barichello or Senna. Here's hoping, just to keep the mix if nothing else.

I think the bmws will go well this season. The engines have to last that bit longer and the bmws in 2008 were fault less engine wise. Vettel will be up there among the top three
It's hard to know how it's all going to pan out with so many new rule changes.
It seems all the cars are pretty close judging my the testing times. I'd say Kubica and Vettel are the 2 drivers to watch aswell as the usual suspects in Hamilton, Massa and Alonso etc.

Latest word on the grapevine is that (ex)Honda are confirmed for this year's F1 championship. Looks like Ross Brawn, to name one, has bought them out as such, and they're gonna be known as Brawn GP.
You read it here first ;)
Edit.
They're gonna be running Mercedes engines, and Jenson & Rubens are confirmed as the drivers. Whether Rubens stays for the whole season though is another story...

Aye, a lot of cheating can go on in testing, and for various reasons :agree:
Only the race weekend will be able to tell us whether Brawn are as fast as it appears.
hey Mart, did you put any money on Jenson, or are you still holding out for Lewis?
No bets placed yet mate. He looks a good bet though...
In another twist to this year's new rules & reg's, it looks like the driver's title will go to the driver who has the most wins throughout the season, and not his total tally of points.
If per chance 2 or more drivers finish with the same number of wins, it'll then be decided on points tally a la the old fashioned way.
The rest of the standings, from second to last place, will be decided by the current/old points system with the constructors' championship unaffected.
If this rule had been in place last year, Massa would've been crowned champion.
Hmmm, I'm not so sure this is a good move by the FIA...
I don't like the idea of the driver winning the most races becoming champion, just because of that fact :crap: I think the driver/team with the most consistency should take it in my opinion.
Interestingly, Mansell would have won it 3 times!

U know why thier doing this, its cus they didn't want Lewis Hamilton to be the champ, it wouldn't be the first time the've done something to try and stop him

Some very very posative performances in testing from the likes of renault and BMW and also Redbull will possible make things interesting if the top teams like ferrari and Mclaren arnt holding things back
Kers system should make for more overtaking oppurtunities/action
Points system for the world championship title scrapped, now this is in my honest opinion a great move. There will be less relianse on just good pit stop stratergy and being able to play it safe and come 2nd because you know you have a points cushion, this will make the front running alot more about the racing then it has been in previous years. (yes i do mean racing and not just driving)
honda - Brawn F1 - shame that young senna isnt getting a seat really it is, he showed great promise and barrachello is past it now he needs to step out of the way, hes the most experienced driver on the grid and not won more then a handful of races.
Button is a good driver but needs to sort his shizzle out! he should have a shave and focus on driving and not looking like a noncy nonce
all in all iam looking forward to it!
Mart, where are you getting this bleeding edge information from, the BBC website?
Just ribbing mate ;)
I don't think the wins = prizes introduction will bother McLaren this year given their admission of being way off the pace. They were something like two seconds behind the Brawn cars in testing the other day and those guys had only been driving them for four days, lol.

I think honda have been a bit clever last year with taking the car out of development for that season and concentrating on this coming season! As shown they have made such great steps forward to this year, i am still all for Mclaren but cant wait to see Honda, Red Bull & Torra Rosso be up there scaring the pants of Mclaren and Ferra*spat* ;)

Don't read too much into the pre-season testing times. Team Brawn might be one to watch for sure, and I wouldn't rule out a win for Jenson in Oz, but then I wouldn't write-off the silver bullets just yet either...

no matter how much i want them to be doing well Mclaren are struggling, Hamilton is very unhappy in the pits during testing, had a hissy fit last week because he was being beaten on pace by barrachelo!!
This is insider info. ^^ but also the same source is saying dont count them out just yet as they arnt running the full race setup they are spending alot of focus time on individual parts of the car and working strongly to be hitting the first race with the KERS system.
If they get all this together and KERS by the first race they will be very very strong contenders!
As for Brawn GP they are driving a car that was being developed heavily about 3 months in to last season, honda refocused there developement budget very quickly last year after a really really poor start to the season so yes expect them to do well.
Dont rule out vettell in the red bull very good driver, also alsono is gonna be upsetting the front runners again the renault is the ugliest car on the grid but its quick, and the BMW's are both faster then the mclarens and in many testing sessions faster then everyone!
ohhhh boy, if testing is anything to go by this season is gonna be a good one!

Cant wait now getting close think the new rules are a great idea gone are the days of an easy stroll to the line, the races will be very competitive at the front with hopefully more overtaking than in previous years due to the relaxed laws on aerodynamics.
My moneys going on Alonso think hes still the most talented driver with experience to boot, Hamilton will be there or there abouts but think his gung-ho style could see him lose races. Darkhorse has got to be Vettel, started to show some really good performances at the tale end of last season and a demon in the rain watch out for him. Bring it on :D
Come on Mart, where's the bulletin for the latest breaking news on F1? :D
Teams spit the dummy and FIA agree to defer wins based championship system until 2010 just nine days before the start of the new season.
"You told me I was 5th..."  :sad2:
The radio said he finished 6th, Hamilton is told he's 5th and the orgainsers find a way to make him 7th.
No doubting that this is one of the most exciting, interesting and uncertain starts to an F1 season that most of us here will have ever seen!
Where's the circus headed to next?
China, in a fortnight's time.
I'm just hoping the Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota cars aren't seemed illegal at the hearing on the 14th...

Don't think it will be ruled illegal, as you may have heard other teams are looking to follow their front wing design!
How bad is are the Mclaren's this year, but i suppose that's the price you pay for a season long battle with Ferrari, although they ain't so good either. If they don't get their finger out soon Button will run away with it.

Good decision. Have the high court of appeal got the tech knowledge to over rule stewards, it was a point that Brawn said in an interview that they werent technically knowledgeable enough to over rule the stewards?
Don't think it'll matter, Chris. The FIA panel have acknowledged & confirmed that the diffuser does "comply with the applicable regulations", therefore I can't see that decision being overturned in a high(er) court of appeal.
Game back on for Brawn GP, Williams & Toyota then  :)

Tbh, if the diffusers really do negate the intended increase in overtaking opportunities, I think the rules should be changed for next year to make them more explicit in order to achieve the original intention.

Already looking forward to next year - The Senna name lives on in Bruno, who is now confirmed at Team Campos. Ferrari have a strong line-up, Jenson defending his title, Hamilton/McLaren should be up there, might be worth an early bet on either of the Redbull guys taking the 2010 title, new boy Kob' @ Toyota could be one to watch, no more re-fuelling allowed, Lotus makes a return, as does Cosworth, S.Korea's new track/venue, and there'll be a British GP @ Silverstone ;)
Should be a great season  :)
Already looking forward to it Mart. What a cracking year it's been this year.
I don't think the Red Bull guys will manage it next year. I think Ferrari and McLaren will have caught back up again and one of them at least will be able to better the Red Bulls (is my prediction). With Merc buying into Brawn to the tune of 75% I wouldn't be consigning them to 4th place. They already have the best engine in F1. With a non-compromised chassis design for the MB engine next year it'll be right up there. This years chassis was a chop job to fit the engine at short notice and in Ross Brawns own words was a botch up.
Should be a classic year with genuine contenders in all the top drives. Can't say we've seen that for many years. McLaren Lewis:mad:/Kimi:coffee:. Ferrari Massa:scared:/Alonso:satan:. At least Sauber will now have a slot back in. They were waiting for someone to drop out. Wouldn't be a shock if some of the new teams don't make it either.
Bit of a news update, although take this with a wee pinch of salt at the mo...
Looks like Silverstone could finally get the green light for next year, mainly thanks (!) to Bernie taking a reduction in what the BRDC has to pay him.
However, this is counter-weighed with France (Magny Cours) now also being allowed to stage a GP again next year, again at a cheaper rate similar to Silverstone, thus Bernie still effectively rakes in the same sum of money overall.
That makes it a 20-race season next year.
Interesting mate.
I guess there ought to be an increase to any financial cap that might be set upon the teams next year then if there's more races than normal.
You gotta have a British GP :)
More news.
Mercedes Benz have taken over Brawn GP. Ross still remains team principal, but the Germans are now running the show.
They'll still supply engines to McLaren, but only for the next few years or so.
They've also made it clear they want a full German team (Rosberg & Heidfeld being the drivers lined up), and the latest report, as a result of that, is that Button is now gonna sign with McLaren.

Not really, as Mercedes will still supply engines to McLaren for the next season or 2.
The reason why Mercedes are distancing theirself from McLaren, is simply because of the new MP4-12C, with its McLaren designed & built powerplant. Not good sales strategy on both behalfs if a company's flagship road-car is using its own engine, whereas it's F1 car is using another (rival) engine.
Button did/does want more money, and rightly so in my opinion - He's the current world champion, which'll bring sponsorship deals galore to him & the team he's driving for for starters, and not forgetting the fact he took a ~£10mil' pay cut this year to help keep the Brawn GP dream alive.
As an edit to the previously mentioned German drivers driving for Mercedes next year, Glock is also in the running for the 2nd seat.
