Here's my guide to taking the engine out...
1) Apply brakes in car with large pole/piece of wood and remove the front hub nuts.
2) Remove the front wheels and jack the front of the car up.
3) Undo the lower suspension to hub nuts/bolts (both sides of car).
4) Pull the hub downwards and "pull" out (hammer it out if you have to) the driveshaft from the hub (both sides of car).
5) Remove the gear selector shaft from the gearbox.
6) Drain the gearbox and engine oils into separate containers.
7) Make sure that you can remove the drivers side driveshaft roll-pins!!!
8) Remove the bonnet and grill.
9) Remove the battery and start charging it for later!!!
10) Remove the exhaust downpipe connection.
11) Remove the intercooler and boost hoses.
12) Remove the turbo "L" shaped pipe. You can also remove the turbo if you want to.
13) Remove the alternator.
14) Remove all the hoses to the waterpump, except the one by the temperature gauge connection.
15) Remove the radiator, remembering to remove and plug the oil connections, as well as disconnecting the fan connector and fan switch.
16) Reaching under the drivers' side wheel arch, undo the two bolts attached to the antiperc. fan. Disconnect the fuel supply to the carburettor and the wiring to the antiperc. fan. Remove the whole antiperc. fan unit.
17) Undo the clutch cable from the gearbox.
18) Undo the 3 bolts that attach the passenger side driveshaft to the gearbox.
19) Pull off both the passenger and drivers side driveshafts. (hope you remembered to remove those rollpins!!!)
20) Unplug the main engine wiring connector.
21) Unplug the speedo wire from the intermediate connector.
22) Free up the antiperc. fan wiring and rest it, and the alternator connections on top of the engine.
23) Disconnect the wiring to the temperature gauge on the waterpump.
24) Pull off the hosing to the "P3" connector on the carb top and also the hose that joins the carburettor beneath the fuel inlet.
25) Disconnect the choke and accelerator cables, and move them to one side.
26) Remove the brake servo vacuum hose that attaches to the back of the inlet manifold.
27) Push the +ve lead off the battery through the hole in the scuttle tray and pull it away from the clips on the firewall.
28) Undo the -ve earth from underneath the VIN plate.
29) Remove the tray that the intercooler sits on.
30) Disconnect the HT lead from the ECU at the distributor, the timing sensor wire, the pinking detector lead and the vacuum hose (to the ECU).
31) Undo and D.I.Y. wiring/hoses ...including in car bleed valves etc.
32) CHECK EVERYTHING AGAIN!!!!
33) Undo engine mount bolts, including the front ball and socket joint (engine steady).
34) Attach engine hoist to lifting points.
35) Lift the engine out of the car very slowly, moving any obstructions out of the way.
