View Full Version : Jacking points
This is a really noob question (but i am one) and i'm slightly embarrassed to ask but i don't want to get it wrong. What are the best places to use a trolley jack and stands? Pics would be good:o
its not such a daft question at all.
firstly, it depends on how low your car is, and what you can actually get to with a trolley jack!
It's factory standard if it was any higher it'd be on stilts high and i've got these, i can't remember off the top of my head how big they are but i'm sure that's not an issue.

im intrested in this too! :D
if it was standard for an example?
i'd always jack the front up under the subframe, next to where the front wishbones attach.
i'd jack the back up from the joint where the trailing arm, torsion bars, and mounting to body all meet. - kinds circular in shape, witha metal tag sticking off it at about 4 o'clock position.- just behind where the rear arch and the side skirt meet.
if you need to jack the car up from about the middle, use the chassis rail - that is towards the front of the car, extending back from the subframe on either side to about the middle of the car.

:agree: to make life a little easier and if you've got one, use the standard jack on the chassis to get it started then use the trolley jack as mentioned. I used to drive my car up on bricks to get a bit more height before i thought about the JACK!
im really anal when it comes to jacking a car up, ive never been fond of using trolley jack anywhere besides on the subframe where sparkie mentioned. i used the std jack everywhere else.
the amount of fuked up jacking points ive seen is enough for me to take me time jacking mine up.
where does everyone locate there axle stands.?
I always put the jack and the stands on the chassis rails for the front. for the back what sparkie said or ill jack off the rear torsion bar, but i put the stands only on the torsion bar.
Have been toying with the idea of removing the torsion bar and arms etc to get it sandblasted and powdercoated so where then?
Or do i just use big bits of wood;)
what an awesome jack and stands hoolio lol
I have some chocks of wood about 3" high that i have to drive my van/gtt on so i can get the trolley jack under. I always put the jack/stands on the front chassis rails that are parallel to the sill. On the rear i jack it up on the ball part of the rear axle/torsion bar.
One thing ive never used is the original suicide jack. I could imagine a half crusty sill falling to bits using that! Id never jack up the sill on the lip with a trolley jack either like most tyre garages do, its most likely to cause damage/make your sill fall to bits.

Mmmm, it jacks and they stand, i could post pics of my wood as well if you like:)
Ah, not sure that came out right.

im with sparkie, subframe and rear beam ends + axle stands..
i NEVER use my sills and try not to on other cars unless there rock-ard and its a padded jack. most cars i see rotting are started around jacking points, mine were shot to sh1t:(
