Hows the starter held into position, do I have to drop the exhaust?
I'm trying to change mine now, under axle stands in my spacious garage:crap:
I've removed the os wheel, removed the 3 retaining bolts/ ala the Haynes manual, but because I can't see feeck all what else is holding it into position?

Thanks.

3 x bolts attaches it to the gearbox that is about it think the bolts are 16mm

I think the power feed to the starter is also attached to the block with bracket 13mm bolt.

Couple of wiggles and it should come out matey

There is a very shallow dowel, and usually it needs a belt!

you can do it without taking anything off, and from the top if ya need too

there could be a gay bracket on the back, and a heatshield come to think of it... but i always bin them after they're off

Okay I can't actually see the bolts that are holding it into position, where are they?Sorry to be a spaz, but in simple mans terms because I can't fecking see them:cartman:, I've removed the retaining bracket bolts, but not the bracket, I don't seem to have a heat shield so the previous owner must of had it off in the past.

take the bracket off from side off gearbox ,, its 3 16mm bolts that hold the starter onto the gearbox , you can get 16mm scocket onto the top 2 with a extension , and use a spanner on the bottom ,, dont losse the loction dowel if it falls out the box or starter

Was a bit slack with the car this weekend, I've got the top 2 off under the turbo, but where's the lower one, I can feel a 13mm bolt/Nut, but my hands are too big to feel around near the shield that covers the wires.:crap:

awesome. cheers Dave, but Its one of those where If I find the bolt it will come off, I suppose it doesn't help that I've got the patience span of a gnat at the moment. Give me a shout if theirs any meets on in the not to distant future though, got a few things to sort out on the five, like new exhaust etc and I'll be their if not, in my van.

you have to use a 16mm spanner to reach it apparently:agree:

i did have pics of the back of my engine but no idea where.. its just a case of giving it a grope and seeing whats there:)

but remember where that dowel is, i forget everytime and end up on here asking for the location:ashamed:

dunno about any meets, some lads have been down the ace cafe but its a trek for me so will go 1 in 3 or something:cartman: with no rep we would have to dream something up ourselves. there were a few Reading members but they left over the years and no new ones replaced them.:(
