Hi guys is there any way to check a heater fan works without it being on the car???
as I have just removed mine which didn't work and would like to test it to see if it was that or the wiring??

Just connect it up to a 12v battery but watch it doesn't have all your fingers off in the process!

Try holding it in your right hand and turning it :cartman:

So hold your right hand.... With your left?? & try to turn that Right Hand??? Which way should he try & turn his hand?

Will that tell him if the fan works??

Turn your right hand, containing the fan. If it turns, it works :D

yep i done that with mine 12volt it mate,if it works drop a bit of oil
on the spindal whilst its out!,mine works when it wants to,btbh the
engine makes enough heat to demist the screen anyway.

Multi directional.

It doesn't matter which way you connect it, the fan will turn either one way or the other.

my pals fan does not work either we tested fan on battery all was ok we tested wiring and was getting a feed but put the two together and no current?he then smashed the plastic ring under the fan to get to what looks like a relay messed about with it still no joy anyone know the diffinative answer ?he' ready to jump off suicide bridge:scratch::sad::confused::satan:

Fan switch or the resistor thingy for speed ??

Fan switch or the resistor thingy for speed ??

this is it,i was thinking of replacing it for a small spal,6 or 9...
but its only one speed, how would you control speed?
:crap:

The resistor thingy controls the speed .It reduces the voltage to the fan so if that is there then it should work :agree:

guess thats located at dash end then?,so your saying that if an
alternative fan was connected up it possibly should work?

The resisters are in the fan housing and not at the dash end. You could get some resisters from Maplins and experiment. It's pretty simple stuff. If you've got a multimeter you can even measure the resistance of the originals and buy something similar?

I've got a fan housing in the garage if you want a few pics?

thanks woz, interesting,so in relation to the male connectors i think in the
fan housing where are the resistors located?
:)

Woznaldo

It's actually just one big coil spring type resister and the male connectors join it at different points for different resistances. It's located directly behind the male connectors in the housing.;)

I know for some cars you can just buy a resistor pack if the thing goes screwed .... is this not the case for the R5 ????

How would you get access to the resisitors ..... thru the inside of the car and by taking all the dash out ?????

MR TURBO

Right looked at this today and refitted my fan as i thought this was the problem...Still not working and getting on my nerves now what could be the problem??

MR TURBO
15-02-2009, 23:38
Anyone got a wiring diagram??

MR TURBO
22-02-2009, 20:42
Right took off the centre console and the heater controls everything looks fine this end and also on the fan end under the bonnet......Don't know what the problem could be i'll try to check to see if i have a feed coming through and see what happens :scratch:

MR TURBO
23-02-2009, 15:50
If that dont work I guess i'm up for totally rewiring the fan then!!!!!!!

Might be a daft question, but have you checked the fuse?

MR TURBO

I've heard about that but when doing that doesn't it make it single speed all or nothing???

you need to find the cause of the problem first, either switch or wiring.
