Fitting Cam

I'm considering fitting a piper cam in my 5 and acknowledge that removal of the engine is required. But is it possible to fit the cam with the engine in?

Yes it is possible but you will need to tilt the engine over so the cam can be pulled out of the block and rest in the hole in the inner wing (where perc fan lives) and be pull from the car. Its abit fiddly and to be honest might be easy enough to just pull the engine out, there is a way of doing it with the head on too but honestly prob easier to pull head off and then pull block out of the car.

leave the engine in, it's actually pretty easy. cylinder head off, remove perc fan and other bits and bobs in the front driver side of the bay then remove front driver side engine mount nut from underside of subframe and jack the engine up via the sump. you can get the engine up high enough so that the cam comes out and straight into the big round hole in the inner wing where the perc fan normally lives. jacking the engine also improves access to the timing cover, pulley etc.

yes indeed.

you need to remove the head.

undo the engine mount below the alternator.

remove the perc fan if you have one.

obviously remove the sump+timing covers.

now jack the engine up until you cam is level with the perc fan hole on the inner wing.[engine will tilt up higher on the waterpump side]
pull the cam out, the percfan hole give you that extra clearence you need to remove the cam with the engine still in.

Many thanks guys, i need to do my headgasket and engine mounts so that should work out nicely :). I don't have an perc fan either. It sounds relatively easy but i know from experience that it'll will turn into a nightmare :eek:. Thanks for your advice, i'll give it a bash and let you know how it goes.

Is it possible to change cam if head is not removed and engine is not in the car? Of course push rods need to be removed (I try to change uprated valve springs bymyself...any tips to do that? I don't have specific device to compress springs.)

you can pull the cam followers into the space between the block and the head, using a magnetic pen.
you can then take the dizzy gear out.
and then the cam can come out.

to put the folowers back in use a screwdriver - tilt the folower forward and push it back into the hole.
