to make it quieter just get a stainless middle box about 4" diameter and 18" long.....worked well for me
if its banging the bumper you'll have to stiffen up the rear mountings....but if its just too big you might be well stuck
there was a stainless insert for the bumper available a few years ago.....it involved cutting!!!

A 3.5" tailpipe should fit the OE bumper perfect, you sure you not got a 4" one?
I agree a 3" looks better, they are getting hard to find so best thing you could do is weld a new tail trim onto your existing box
