View Full Version : servicing parts
Hi all
Im hopefully picking up my new 5 tomorrow!
Its been years since my last one and ive pretty much forgotten everything i need to know.
Could anyone let me know which Oil, filter and plugs i need please.
I thought this would have been done to death on the forum but i cany find a sticky and typing "oil" into the search box comes back with no searches, so apologies if im not looking in the right places.
Cheers

Thanks Ian
So I'm looking at :
Oil - 0w-40 any decent brand
Filter - Purflux LS218
Plugs - Any decent brand that fit
Cheers
My decision on oil and plugs would depend on the state of tune of the engine and wether or not it has been modified or not and what you intend to use the car for?

Oil - Mobil super 2000 10/40 semi synth
Plugs - Old NGK B8EVX if you can get old stock, new type iridium BR8EIX
Oil filter - Jurys out but read this thread:-

Plugs;
My experience was the thin centre electrodes work differently to the fat ones.
My 5GTT would start more easily with the thin ones and pull a bit harder coming onto boost. A smoother transition from off boost to on boost.
But with the thicker centre electrodes in, the engine pulled a bit harder at max boost and revs.
I guess it's down to changes in the spark timing as I think the thin tips might light the mixture more easily, so give a bit of timing advance.
The engine perhaps needed a bit less advance at max power, so the thick tips worked better.
The NKG gold palladium centre electrodes would burn away quite fast.
I didn't try them in my engine but those cone shaped centre electrodes (NGK B8EVX?) seemed to work well. Didn't soot up or wear away and provided a smooth engine, probably due to consistent spark timing.
I might like try the very thin Iridium tips, the Denso at 0.4mm being thinner than the NKG at 0.6mm, but I don't have any data to say they are worth the cost. Graphs I've looked at show they don't make more power. But if they make the engine start better, then maybe that alone is enough. Also, going on my previous hypotheses that they light the mixture easier, they may give a more consistent spark timing which may lead to a smoother engine, so that would be worth it too, especially at higher revs.
Oil: Anything from 0W 40 - 10W 60 (I use Castrol 10W 60 at the moment)
Oil filter: Purflux LS218
Plugs: NGK BR8EIX
