Im looking at fitting a phase 1 172 box to my c1j engine, i have a few questions though,

1. are they the same housing which will bolt straight on?
2. can i keep my c1j flywheel ,clutch and starter?
3. i know the speedo is different but i dont need is as i have standalone dash.
4. Any other problems ill have like drive shafts? or anything

im now on box 3 which has major leaks and if im going to get a box rebuilt id rather have the stronger clio one than the 5 one .

any help much appreciated ross :)

as far as i remember, clutch, flywheel and starter remain the same. speedo needs changing, and passenger shaft needs to be shortend.

It should all swap over mate, there all based on the same casing so shouldn't ne a problem.

Mark, if your on about Rob's 172 box the only reason he had to have a shortened saft was because of his LSD diff inside.

you'll need the dowels out of your old gearbox to swap for the ones in the 172 box.

One think you may find with the 172, is if you're in the habit of dropping the sump in the car you find that you cant, or I couldn't anyway.

thats great guys , i dont drop the sump in tbh i normally have the whole thing out . Is the box better interms of strength i gather my acceleration will be better as the final drive is slightly shorter?

just to clarify all should swap straight over :) ?

i can get the boxes local to me alot easier than a 5 one they also come with warrenty :)

Nobody has proven the 172 box is stronger than the 5 gt one.

the 172 has differant ratios in 4th and 5th, not sure on the strength differance.

True but they aren't 20 years old, which probably helps!!

a shorter final drive doesn't make for better acceleration. you gain in some speed brackets and loose out in others, it evens out over distance.

ok , so maybe not stronger but as Ashy says newer, the one im looking at would be a low mileage one so hopefully in better condition than the previouse jb3 boxes ive had.Would the ratios be THAT noticable then scoff? I guessing someone has used this box on a c1j?

yeah quite noticable, you jump from 3.73 to 4.07 FD, enough to bring the 5th gear cruise rpm up a few hundered rpm's. there are a few people that have used them on c1j, they definately fit ok.

Thanks again scoff and Turbo ted ;) i think ill go for it , not got too much to lose from it and on track ive only hit 120mph-- 125mph at the most on snetty staight so dont mind any top end loss :)

quick one, how come the gtt jb3 is so much stronger than the clio 16v jb3? are the bearing pressed like the clio williams jc5? either way i killed a brand new clio 16v jb3 direct from renault in 6k miles:disagree: but the jc5 i have now is laughing, thrown pod and my driving at it and a short shift and it seems much better. and supposedly the jb3's out of the 5's take similar abuse

Interesting to know too. I guess its down to the materials used dependant on power.

From what i've heard about the boxes on the phase 1 Clio and/or 19 16V is that the diff circlips pop out, they can't handle a lot of torque.

Speaking to more than 1 Renault technician about the JC5 box fitted to Clios and Meganes they say the achillies heel is 5th gear, well my 5th gear is proper fubared along with the gearbox casing.

For what it's worth i'd say stick with the JB3 :scared: :D

A couple of blobs of weld has held my Clio Sprint cars diff circlip in for over two seasons now.......
