View Full Version : Intermittent Wiper Problem

Since I bought my car about 7 years ago, I have never had an intermittent wiper. It is pretty annoying!

Recently I have tried to fix the problem using this forum and other posts that I can find to no avail.

I have tried a new wiper stalk, 3 wiper timer relays and changed the fuse twice. What else is there?!

I have constant and fast constant speed wipers, and the wipers do reset to the bottom when turned off, rather than stop dead anywhere in the screen.

I also have all of the above with every stalk, timer relay and fuse that I have tried in any combination so they must all be working, I think?

Can anybody give some advice? I am at a bit of a loss with it :(

Thanks

It will be the contacts in the wiper motor themselves causing the issue, they will need cleaning or if its broke the motor will need changing

Hi Mark thanks for replying.

Tonight I changed the wiper motor for a known working one... and it still doesn't work!

I also cleaned up all the plugs and sprayed electrical cleaner in them all, they all looked "ok" to be honest.

So now I have changed the fuse, the relay, the stalk and the motor itself all with "known working parts" from CGB.

Whats left? :(

GT Turbo doesn't have a intermittent wiper, its 1 swipe or completely on or fast. The Campus had an intermittent one I seem to remember.

Oh really? What is the point in 1 swipe, I could do that by pulling it down twice and back up at the same time

I guess I have been on a wild goose chase, as the first click of my stalk has never done anything and I presumed it should be intermittent wipers.

However even with all the new parts fitted nothing happens on the first click of the stalk.

I think I am going to have to admit defeat on this one haha

Are you certain Dale? I could have sworn my GTTs had an intermittent setting but it's been a while!

Can anyone else confirm this?

I know they are different to non GT turbo versions. Been a while since needing to use it for driving in rain

Nope, there's not one on the GTT (unless I'm loosing the plot entirely - wouldn't surprise me!) It's either slow speed or fast speed. There is the wash/wipe as well, obviously.

well I'll be :agree:

Thanks for letting me know!

So, what is the first click on the stalk for? Mine does nothing, 2nd click is constant, 3rd click is fast constant. And of course pull it towards for washers.

So, to clean my windscreen I have to pull the stalk to spray water, then click it down 2 clicks to get constant and then back up 2 clicks to turn it off..

Slightly annoying

I thought it was only 2 clicks - slow and fast? Oh christ I'm going to have to check this now, you'd think I'd know this kind of thing by now after 16 years!

I definitely have 3 clicks on both my stalks :agree:

So, there IS an intermittent on the wipers after all! :cartman: The first click down is intermittent, 2nd click is slow and 3rd is fast.

Can you hear the relay clicking every 10 seconds of so? If you can I would then check you have 12v at the wiper motor. If you can't hear a relay clicking I would check you're getting 12v at the relay.

So are you saying you DO have an intermittent wiper on your gt turbo?

Intermittent as in, 1 wipe every.. 5 seconds or so?

Thanks

I could be wrong so bear with me. I believe the intermittent wipe has a separate fuse so double check all your fuses again. The only reason I seem to remember this is back in the day of Roly's Fast 5 mag there was something in there about if the wipers are frozen to the screen it can blow the fuse that does the intermittent wipe.

Actually I think I am wrong and it's the park position the blown fuse effects. However I would double check all the fuses to be on the safe side.

Yes there is an intermittent mode on the GTT, its the first click down on the stalk. Every 5 or 10 seconds ish :agree:
