View Full Version : odd oil pressure...

any idea what would cause this odd oil pressure problem?

(standard oil pressure gauge) running 15w50 fully synthetic Fuchs oil.
from cold, reads just over '3', then as it warms up, the oil pressure rises to '4'.
which is where it stays until its up to temp.
then if you take the car for a 'good drive' then oil pressure drops back to just over '3', but when you rev it reads over '4' more like '5' - like it should do...

what would cause the low pressure when its cold?

dodgy oil pressure sender?

dodgy turbo core ? (- oil ways close up with heat?)

dodgy crank bearings ?

where is the sender ? on the oil feed like the gtt ? do you have an oil cooler without a thermostat ?

btw I figured out about 2 years ago that if I didn't have an oil pressure guage at all then I actually enjoyed driving the car again !

i tend to ignore mine n all, used to watch it like a hawk but as scoff so rightly says, all u do is worry then

time for me to bog off but I think you might be worrying too much. it won't be the turbo, have you seen the oil ways ? there's no way they're closing down or moving. I've melted a thrust bearing so bad that it welded its own oil ways shut, but thats another story :D again with engine bearings. I think if there was an issue there you would see low pressure when it's hot.

it all sounds happy other than for the low cold reading. I thought maybe if you had a cooler that was quite restrictive when it came to passing cold thick 15w/50 oil then you might get a lower reading after the cooler until the oil had warmed sufficiently to flow through it better. ofcourse it could just be the crap renault electronic gauge.

yeah its on the turbo 2. the oil ressure sender is in the usual c1j place.

my gtturbo has no working oil pressure gauge, for this very reason too! - i love driving it!

it runs a remote filter and oil cooler with no thermostat.
the fuchs 15w50 really is like thick red gelatinous goo when cold.... which is why i was getting worried.

maybe just a case of 'renault paranoia'.
