View Full Version : RTOC's Detailing Section

I'm not into car washing at all but I realise there are a few people who take great pride in 'detailing' their cars.

Having read this:

http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=40956

And some other of Steve's detailing posts, should it be made as a 'sub forum' in the technical section or similar? I think it'd be great to have especially as our cars are now credible classics and will be attracting owners that will be into this 'posh washing' malarkey.

I realise it already exists in the articles section but it seems a bit lost in there and would surely attract more attention on the main boards?

I've enjoyed reading Steve's reviews and instructions and am mainly taking interest because I have a liquid gold clio!

Agreed thus info needs to be correctly positioned where it's always easily found.:agree:

the reason its in articles is because its a guide

on the articles section its closed for posting to almost everyone except admin comm and admin to post but i can easily change the permission depending

tbh steve can have it where he wants id just need to set it up, if steve dont mind people commenting then it needs to be moved

steve let me know what you would like sir no problems either way:agree:

Hello Folks,

I'm not averse to having an open detailing section, however, I would not
want to see product reviews turn into a morrass of replies. Review / Guide
threads I feel should be just that. What that means is there could be two
or more people conducting their reviews (following the presentation format)
about the same product. If these could be kept tidy, that would be good.

Another way would be to have a Review Team, say 4 people at a time,
who have posting access to the Review section while they belong. One
thing I _don't_ want it to become is "all according to Lowiepete", I'm by
no means that much of a guru! It's _not_ "Lowiepete's detailing section"!!!

As for the "open" section, of course it would be good to compare cars on
the grounds of bling, in the same way others enjoy grunt. Keeping the evil
rust at bay is getting to become a bigger priority. So, I suppose we could
have a detailing section and a product review sub-section with more strict
posting rules...

How's that?

Regards,
Steve

P.S. I think Mick has enough on his hands at present. I think I'd prefer to see
the new site go live before any decisions are made...

Thanks for your support Ross :niceone:, however the content of that missive is very much
in draft form. So far, there's not much feedback on what I'm proposing there.
Is such a structured approach suitable for RTOC? If so, what have I missed out?
If not, then what alternatives?

All I'm presently doing is populating a sub-section from posts that are now almost
totally lost in their present home. I'm thrilled that people are enjoying reading
them and if I can help make the job easier for anyone, then I've achieved my aim.

Steve

im happy to do whatever steve, but id just need to know whats whats

regarding yourself in the current location I can make a new usergroup up for you and you have your own permissions that ill set and then set the forum permissions too

so that means in English terms admin, admin committee and steve have access to post new threads in its current location I also add them as a sub forum mod for it to work

as I stated earlier its a guide so it should really be in articles, btw ross on upgraded site articles appear in a forum view so will be easily seen unlike now:agree:

EDIT I could make a separate board somewhere ease where they can post there woh's
so it can be spoken about, as I say as long as I know and I can setup easily then no probs:coffee: its alphabetical too for you steve:agree:

Thanks Mick - I'd already noticed the Alpha Order :niceone:

I want to say that I'm not the leader on this. If we blame anyone, it's Matt Cole :smokin:
I'm only the author a range of reviews, though I am anxious that I'm not on my own!

I've prepared the text referenced by Ross above, so that we can provide an easily
kept structure. So, it's up to the powers that be. If it complicates matters by creating
forums all over the place, I'm not averse to posting in the Articles for tidyness and
again into general chat, or technical section, so that others can post their views, but
not reviews! The only request I'd make is that reviews for the same product do go
into the same article thread as 2nd or subsequent posts.

Steve

Any piece that we don't want posted on can simply be a locked thread :)

How times have changed in the RTOC.
Even a few years ago the general consensus was that no one cared about having a clean car, just one that went fast! Haha :)

Heheheh...
Well, at least I'm trying to show how this "posh washing malarkey" is much simpler
and easier than people might dread. There are probably still a few who are heading
for this hills in fear

Yep these reviews are excellent and they should be locked articles to keep them clean :agree:

It would be good to have a linked/centralised place where members who buy and try these things discuss their experiences but then I guess they can start individual threads of their own for that.

Yes, of course - but I'm happy to wait until after the big move! Options picture
will be much clearer then. In new forum please post a second copy of the
"About" sticky. What I'll do then is amend the instructions so that reviews
from others initially get posted into that thread. That should keep things easy
and simple :)

I agree :niceone:

There is one small consideration. The articles are presented in alphabetical order
instead of most recent first. This removes the need for a section index, so it also
removes the need for extra work. The upshot of that is if several people write
a proper review about the same product they should all appear in the same
thread. The alpha order will highlights gaps, several posts will highlight a popular
product.

Steve

To be honest I don't know. At this point I'm wondering how many members are
sufficiently interested in the topic to justify a separate forum.

Mick,

Name Forum: Detailing Chat (?)
Name Articles: Detailing Reference (?)

I'll happily Mod the Articles - mostly so that I can keep an eye on how the Alpha
Order of titles falls... I'm unsure about the chat section, I'm a bit shy of that power,
though I suppose it would be useful for moving posts. I'd not want to be sole
Mod - I'll leave it to others with experience to keep order.

Edit: Two requests.
1) Can this thread be renamed RTOC's Detailing Section
2) There's another post ready for transfer into the articles section

Steve

2. make a forum in general chat called detailing chat?

All fine - all this has happened at a breathless pace. There's perhaps another 20
articles to post. Most are previously posted elsewhere, but a couple or three are
recent and unique. :niceone:

One other small request - can the "thumbsdown" post type icon be exchanged for
a "New" icon to indicate a new post within the articles section. There's no great
hurry, but it will become a useful indicator in future.

Hello Folks,

Well, the new Detailing Reference section has now been populated with
30 threads on varying topics, so hopefully there is something for everyone.

Link to the RTOC Detailing Reference Section (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/forumdisplay.php?145-Detailing-Reference)

Unlike the other Forum Sections, the topic titles are arranged alphabetically so
it should be easier to either find a certain manufacturer, or a gap in learning.

This has been a bit of a whirlwind do, but I do hope that from here there will
be other contributors, especially as I have limited motor function etc. There's
nothing to be fearful of, in fact, when I have done tuition details the most
common remark afterwards is: "it's much easier than I thought it would be"
or "the results show that it's definitely been worth giving it a try".

In a word folks: Enjoy!

Regards,
Steve
