New poster! (less than 10 posts)

Im taking my 5 down to a local garage to get it checked out 2mo. It failed its last MOT on on a few things, mainly it needing some welding around the jacking points 18 months ago. It hasnt had anything done since then so i fear things may have got worse.

Was wondering if the worst case scenario would also be needing to get the sills replacing? If so could anyone give me a round about figure i could expect to pay to get this done?

It does look a bit tatty next to the skirts, would it be worth getting them done anyway whilst the jacking points are being done?

Thanks

My phylosophy is get as much welding as you can afford at any one time! Unfortunately the chances are its going to need some sooner or later!

I used to charge that for doing the 2 outers, but most R5's would need atleast some part of the inner repairing too once the outer had been cut off. they nearly all rot the inners through right above the jacking point, then again just above the corner of the door/rear quarter.

i paid something like £170 for the rear two thirds of the rear sills to be done.. the front was rebuild by myself and my uncle taking the best part of 2 days, inner sill, front jacking points, pretty much the front corners..

no welders gonna jump for joy welding a 5, its a 5h1tty job.. my uncle could weld a sheet of metal to an orange peel but rolled his eyes when he looked at the rot on my 5.. :p top man for doing it tho, cost = bottle of whisky:cool:

I had both inner and outers replaced last year for the MOT. Part of the floor was gone too where it meets the inner sill. Cost me £550.

Mine looks as though its similar to what you had done, i don't wanna be paying £550 though !!
Was that inclusive of all parts and painted up ? :smokin:

I supplied the sills, side skirt clips and rivets. All painted yes. TBH mine was very bad. Nearly all the inner both sides had to be replaced. I'd say that figure was worse case.

If its a project and you have the space I would get a rolling shell and swap everthing over. You could be spending £500 + on welding with the one you have.

I think this is stage 5 weight reduction

I'm gonna get it looked at this week so i'll post my quotes on here for you all to laugh at !!

I think swapping the whole lot over would create too much of a job for me on my own, and i'd never get it finished ! but i have thought about it.

If it cost £500 at least i've kept it on the road instead of choppin it to bits for a quick profit ?? :smokin:

i had some inner and outer sills done last year cost me 300 all in, you can cut the sill down to below the side skirt so you dont have to get the car painted then;)

If i get a bill for £300 i will be happy. Just everything else i need to get done to pass!

There are some patches of rust inside the boot space just below where the kidney shaped grille things go in, would those need to be patched up too?

Got a bad patch around the windscreen, not to big, 6cm long, by 3cm wide. What can be done about this. Anyone had any rust work done around windscreen?

You could get someone to cut a piece off a rotten shell or a campus and get it patched in ? :smokin:

Common rust point on the 5 :(

I think it means the car's had a new windscreen & the fitter scratched the paint getting the old screen out so as a result it's rusted?!

I got a new panel from Renault when i had my car done but you can get patch it up with plates or another lump cut out of another car.

I replaced both of mine a couple of years back, I wish I'd kept the pictures to post up:(
I drilled out the spot welds and welded to the lower line where the side skirt meets the rear quarter, I had to make new inner sills for the outers to tack to. It took a bit of pissing about as the car was on axle stands though. I'll find more picks of the rust, I spent fricken ages Cutting away metal, welding metal etc. anything can be sorted with in reason, depends if you've got the patience for it, I know I haven't anymore.

Bloody hell!! Thats rotted well under there and quite surprised on that car too.

That would take abit of time to do, not impossible but would need alot cutting out of there. Would also depend how far it goes into the seal and underneath the car, mine had abit of rot under there and i had to construct the jacking point from scratch on one side and the front of the seal.

Question is do you want to save the car.

This was the state of my rust when i removed the sills and wondered why my rear bumper wasnt attached anymore

it took me 2months to finish all the welding and painting as trying to fit it in and around my daily job and the gf was quite hard work was well worth it tho :) this is the result all primered up ready for a final inspection b4 painting

cheers deano and steve hadnt thought of that.

It doesnt have the original screen, and the rubber seal doesnt sit flat around it so probably not the best job as it must have just been storing water in it. The drivers side looks ok (but probably behind the rubber is a diff story ) its on the passenger side a couple of patches.

After the summer i think im going to have to take it off the road, take the screen out and get it sorted.

around the windscreen on my car i had exactly the same problem where someone had fitted a new screen but the rubber seal was a universal crappy 1 that didnt sit correctly around the window hence i have a few rust spots in the corners caused by cheap seal :crap:
