I have two Renault 5 gt turbos. One is roadworthy and the other still an ongoing project. The project is in the garage and the roadworthy one is on the drive. It has a brick wall all round it and a locked waist high gate.

I did my daily checks on it yesterday as I do. Just make sure the cover is ok on it. See if the tyres need a spot of air etc.

Anyway- yesterday I found the padlock had disappeared and the locking part of the gate severely bent. I can't find the padlock anywhere and my 5 seems fine. So nothing too major and I have replaced the lock but now I am paranoid I am going to go out and it's gone :(

I have removed the fuel pump relay to maybe help it going walkies.

Has anyone any ideas advice on how I can physically secure it. Eg somehow chain it to the wall !!!

Or am I over reacting........?

I know this sounds mad but id be worried too, yours is a clean example liam

I know this will sound mad but when I had my escort mk2 harrier etc I used to use a fexible chain(wire), wrap it round the wheel through the back axle lol not sure on a 5 but that's what I did

Turn it full lock one way, then remove the steering wheel. Or if you have the room dig out a hole and chuck a a metal bollard in front of it.

Pop up bollards, driveway anchors (like people use for motorbikes), wheel clamps, CCTV.

The more deterrents there are, the more people will be put off trying to have a go.

Rawbolt a plate to the ground with a big loop on it, stick a chain through it and around the torsion bar, even if they manage to get it started or try to tow it away itll suddenly stop and by the time they figure out what's going on they'll have made some noise and someone will notice something going on.

Or just get a big dog and leave it in the car

Steering lock
Take main coil TDC wire off and put it under your pillow
Fit CCTV, maybe even a cheap dummy camera
PIR activated security light on your drive
lay bear traps around it

Personally, i would go with the bollard idea.

My 5 is in my garage which is in my garden.
I have fitted a ground anchor inside the garage, it bolts to the floor. I also have a metal loop fitted to the inside of my garage door.
I put a motorbike chain and lock through the door, floor and tow eye of the car.
And 2 bolts through the metal door into the ground.
So even if the somehow open the door it's still chained down and if they do get in the car is also chained to the floor.

Great suggestions. :agree: Which is why the only thing I can add is moat and drawbridge. Lol.

Let us know what you decide to do Liam.

Thanks for the compliment about my 5 lol :p

Good technique to immobilise the escort.

I'd be paranoid about not getting the steering wheel back on straight and no room to fit a bollard sadly :(

Am quite liking this idea. Not the dog but the rawbolt and chain.

This is an idea yes but I have promised myself I will get my project finished. It's been with me for years.

The only option is possibly to hire another garage.

So Trev, my final choice is to remove the tdc lead and fuel pump relay. Also to fit some sort of bracket to the floor and run a chain and padlock around the torsion bar and back through the bracket. I have also purchased a much meatier padlock for the gate. Also looking at a wireless camera with hard drive.

Once my project is finished, I will beef up my garage security with the method mentioned above.

Thanks for the input guys :agree::agree::agree: any other advice/opinions are greatly received:)

Have one of these in a high position (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271372720544) that's clearly visible from
the pavement. They'll wonder where the camera is, and probably
avoid trying the gate...

On the steering wheel idea Liam: You wouldn't remove the wheel and boss from the splined shaft, you'd unscrew the 6 allen bolts on the steering wheel and remove it from the boss. No chance of getting it misaligned when refitting then :)

Only takes 5mins.

The wireless camera idea is good too. If you're good with computers and and have power routed to your garage you could also consider something similar to this set-up, which is very cheap:

This is a great thread, interesting to hear how much security people have on their cars. At home my garage has one of them Garage Defender lock units. Having read some of the methods of security on here, its got me thinking about adding some to my garage. I feel some additional chains, padlocks, spikes, flames and hot oil may need to be installed as my paranoia level has just increased

I wired my Nodiz ignition so I can remove the module easily so when parked anywhere, I just take the module with me and no one has any chance of starting it.

Preventing the 5 car being driven away is not difficult. It had a three way immobiliser cutting ignition, fuel, starter. The Fiat has immobiliser as OE.

Preventing it being lifted away by a lorry with a 'hiab' is more difficult.

I was more concerned about the continual parts thefts and break-ins to it. I fitted a bright and busy flashing immobiliser LED array on the fascia. I had one of those proximity sensors. As well as one under the bonnet, I had a loud siren in the cabin to make them not want to spend much time in there. I didn't get any further damage after all that. It already had one of those 'disclok's', but they wanted stereo, etc, even though it didn't have one, etc..

A friend of mine armed a huge blade under his seat powered by a neumatic ram which would do some serious damage if anyone got into his lotus Carlton.

Personally I'd be making some sort of device thay fires shrapnel at them or gasses them out. They will probably be back I have been robbed before and they always try again.I remember years ago thieves pushed my mams escort out to steal my motorbike. Lol Most people I know would do the same with a Renault 5 unless it is a mint example as you say. Their is specialist groups out their the Ford boys often get hit and the cars broke for parts.

GPS is a good idea or a phone text alarm . personally I'd close this thread or edit the posts so potential thief's don't read what deterrents people already have etc

With my civic I have an alarm on the garage, cctv camera on the corner, jack the car up take the wheels off and leave it on axle stands.

Of course. Doh!! Cracking logic Trev. :agree: I will def be taking the steering wheel off this weekend then.

As for a blade attached to a ram under a seat! That is mental. I'd be too scared to drive it myself Incase it malfunctioned and ripped me a second butthole...

As for closing the thread- not totally sure I agree. The thieves are aware of these techniques. It's just about making it as hard as possible for them. If they really want something , I personally believe they will have it whatever. As sad and defeatest as that sounds ...

if its young guys(joy riders) trying to steal it then they usually hav'nt got 2 brain cells to rub together.
my car was in the driveway covered in snow a couple of years ago and some brainless pr1ck bent the door out....and then must have noticed the alarm led flashing:sad2:
i would say he did,nt even notice that there was no steering wheel fitted either.....and where was he going to go and how fast in 6 inches of snow??!!
ur worry would be the professional thief(who wouldnt be bothered in my opinion)or a sod who has one and wants to ring it!
steering removal is the way to go(unless its snowing of course...lol)
i also removed my door buttons and fitted led's connected to the alarm:)

In reference to scrotes, an early detection (movement sensor) alarm is best, so they scarper before doing any damage.

I can't remember if it was you Trev or someone else? Who mentioned in a previous post about bridging the boost then fitting a dead switch. That might be an idea for Liam too.

How about jack it up and remove one wheel?
Then put a locking wheel bolt back in so another wheel can't be fixed on ?
Simples!
And the car won't go anywhere
It's a good deterrent as a 3 wheel car doesn't drive too well
:)

But a thief would still have a go and destroy the car
