heres a few pics of my new set up for 2012 before christmas i fitted a new set of piper 285 cams and made a new inlet manifold out of 120mm alloy tube.once fitted it was time to go back to mr scoff for a remap dropped the car up to him before christmas and will be collecting it this sunday the 8th jan.after let him loose for two weeks now doing further upgrades the main one was i bought his old turbo garrett gt35r which he fitted along making a new 3inch-2-1/2 downpipe and he also fitted a new 50mm turbosmart wastgate.to view this work scoff has done in technical files on the club forum under scoff all sorts-jobs,his work is superb and his mig welding is as good as tig welding.:)

Awesome work fella, looks the tits, bet it's gunna be a handfull :)

you've got a keen eye, that video might have been an earlier one at about 380hp or something. You don't win any prizes though :D
Its also a timed test, so that means no matter how much torque the motor makes the acceleration rate does not increase. It has the effect of making the car look very linear when actually there is quite a lot of midrange.

Ha, just glad to see the rollers up and running... I'll have to get my finger out and get mine down to you ;) I've heard about Andy C's rolling road running in technique
The main thing for me is safety because road mapping was getting a bit silly toward the end. I don't think I could go back :)
Great work Chris, as always :agree:

Awesome:cool::agree:
Is it me or is it running on top of just one roller and not in-between
Yes but no prizes for you either :cooter: It was an idea I got from the superflow tech guys. The rear roller does nothing on this dyno (on some others it's used for wheel speed I'm told) so it's entirely possible to run on the front roller only. It makes for much better grip. The software allows me to remove the mass of the rear roller from the inertia calculations but it makes next to no difference anyway since it's the brake doing most of the work at 300hp+. I was doing a big turbo C20LET corsa yesterday at 470hp and not a hint of slip from that either. Really happy with that, I was worried grip was going to be more of a problem than it is. :)

absolutely love this robbie i bet you and scoff are proud of the outcome, cant wait see it at pod this year
out of interest ( the first to ask the questions:D)
has the new inlet manifold increased in cubic volume over the o.e item (with the longer runner system) as the fabricated inlet has much shorter runners, or where they shortened to reduce ftlb/ but increase hp, i'm also wondering how laggy that gt35 must be :eek:what rpm,s is it spooling at with 29 psi:cooter:
must have felt awsome on the road ted:cool:
It hasn't left the workshop yet, I hope the gearbox lasts more than a few pulls up the road !
I don't think robbie will mind me saying that it's laggy, about 5500rpm before it comes on strong. I think torque was in the order of 320lb @ 7000rpm (really) but I don't have the plot to hand. He can post that up if he wants to :)

He can post that up if he wants to :) would 270 cams with a bit less overlap/lift have helped in spooling up ? or would have choked /held up the flow at that kind of boost  i'm pushing 290ftlb ,so it will be interesting to see how the gearbox/clutch holds up, as there only supposed to be rated to 300ftlb:scared:  it will be fine, mostly wheelspin;)
a very well done again ted and scoff:smokin: another f series renault showing the numbers:cool:
you can breath some magic over mine in a few months;)
turbo ted
05-01-2012, 19:01
the main reason for changing the inlet manifold was the car was running to hot as the inlet was on top of the rad and no air would flow from fan and out over the engine.
the internal diameter of the old inlet manifold was 80mm and the new manifold is 120mm with 50mm runners so the volume should be slighty bigger.
shorter runners it will have less torque, but i don't want any more torque before on the old turbo at 28psi and at 6000rpm it made 345lbft.
the set up now is all the power is at the top end to go pod racing:D

 looking good, are you running the peloquin diff by any chance;)
was going to fit one, but need to get use to the car with an open diff first:laugh::laugh:
are you running split gears from different boxes or have you stuck with a single type, erf,drw etc.
was going to get that clutch myself, but was informed that the oxide granules on the friction plate would'nt last more than 4000 miles, they built me a 4+ build, which is basicly the full cerametalic ring with solid centre. figured out cheaper than the stage 3+ also:D
used the uprated engine mounts on all corners, on mine and to be honnest it does'nt move one bit(piccys in project thread)
my only conern is the outer hubs splines shearing of, which will mean fitting bigger hubs etc cant remember if you fitted the 172 items:scratch: either way great work rob ,bet you cant wait to get it going again, 9,s this year maybe:D, might need a bigger turbo though;)
Andy it's the CVs that fail before the splines. 172 CV's and hubs are much stronger.

I looked at a few andy, I think most of the newer renault use the same spline and CV as 172 so it was just as easy to use those. Some of the old bigger renaults used the bigger spline too but 172 CV's looked best to me. I had no more trouble after I swapped to those.

scoff has used this diff so i know it works:)using petrol gears in the drw box clutch wise if it only lasts up to 4000miles in that time should do me for 4 years or 4 launches at pod:devil:running 172 hubs already so shafts should be sorted, as for a bigger turbo no but maybe a twin stroll exhaust housing and more boost :D

Those Obx items seem to do the job good after a debur, replacement of the ****ty springs and correct tightening of the bolts.
Twin scroll is a good step forward too, although for pod i don't really think it's necessary.

I dont have access to a welding set at the mo, do you think a heavy piece of plate bolted to the subframe will be adequate?

I don't see why it wouldn't work. There isn't much room though and your wheels may catch slightly on full lock so allow for that.
Mine did anyway and I welded mine.

16-04-2013, 22:58
if you can get two bolts in the plate it should be fine but you need to keep the plate small and tight to the subframe so the wheels clear on full lock.

Wow. Just wow!
Quick question - who made up the PAS pipe which joins to the electric pump? I asked loads of pneumatic specialists around my area and nobody had the correct parts to make me one.

just thought I update this thread well had I few problems with this vw gearbox conversion at the end of last year when I ran at santa pod I broke a driveshaft straight away and destroyed the gearbox aswell at the same time ,because I had a cheap lsd fitted when the driveshaft snapped the diff exploded and destroyed the hole gearbox. So now I got a fully rebuilt gearbox again but this time its fitted with a proper quaife diff and life time warranty.
also fitted new intercooler and changed inlet manifold throttle position and running coil plugs now instead of a coil pack.
that's it for now but the car is ready to rock and make some boost pictures added below regards turboted

Blimey Robbie.. I never new you destroyed to G/B :(
Crikey Robb, the cheap LSD is that not the same one Scoff uses?
As always your work looks fantastic:agree:
Hope the gearbox issue will be over now mate!
Exactly the reason why i used a quaiffe right away!
Looks awesome as always btw, what cops are they?
Looks like they fit perfectly on the f7's head.

i had that OBX diff from the usa a quaife copy it just fell apart when the shaft broke, the coil plugs are off a civic type R there pretty much a straight fit Arthur regards turboted
Good work Rob, I hope to see this run sometime this year so keep us updated when you are hitting Pod.
I know you are moving back across to the emerald isle, will you still be popping over for events ?

well done ted looks the nuts. I thought about using a OBX diff but had a good look at the reviews and decided against it. Hope to see your car up and running this year be good to have another chat too. Really should pull my finger out today so i can start to refit my engine soon not much to do to mine to have it running again :)
Good to see the cops fit that good, i did buy a wasted spark coil from Chris but fancy cops more.
No more leads, look cleaner and they are strong too!
Will look into fitting them on my turbo engine too as the standard ignition doesn't cope well with 330bhp
Dare i ask how much you paid for the coils?
Crikey Robb, the cheap LSD is that not the same one Scoff uses?
As always your work looks fantastic:agree:
I tried one in 2011, it lasted 1 outing and welded itself shut. Quaife after that.
Looking good rob :)
see the video of it boosting down the street other day. Looks like a lot of fun to say the least!

steve I doubt I will be at pod this year at event maybe for a test tune day or next year if RTOC could sort out our own pod day so you can get a lot of runs in,
I have found my new stomping ground in Ireland not quite santa pod but I should be able to teach all these jap boys in Ireland what a Renault is all about.

and sqs sequential dog box :cooter:
Lol, you like to agitate him don't you?
When's yours finally done?
Ok, with graphs like that, that's as much power and torque as anyone needs in a FWD street-spec GTT on pump fuel. Please, it's time to stop!
Lol, you like to agitate him don't you?
When's yours finally done?
wont do anymore until my workshop is built and powered up;)
which i'm hoping to do this year sometime:ashamed:
i dont agitate, just a gentle prod for more power:cool:, if i could live with lag, and could handle the rear end better, i would push for 500+bhp, :smokin:
oh wait a minute..... i am:laugh::laugh: might be a bit to much to ask on my gtx3071r even with a .82 turbine housing:p
turbo ted

you need lag helps you get the power down but lag on a 16v engine that your reving to 8700rpm is none-existant.
living in Ireland now cars storied in my dads haybarn at the moment but im building my own garage for the cars and work shop aswell too.

now for the bad part massive engine failure on Friday I wasn't even driving the car or over reving the engine just warming the engine up in my garage and at 5000rpm the engine stopped and failed so took all the plugs out and found on number 2 cylinder it has dropped an exhaust valve straight through a piston,
reason not sure yet but I think the standard exhaust valves just cannot cope with the heat my engine makes now.
so a new rebuild over the winter with some super strong titanium valves of some sort,
regards Robbie

number 2 cylinder it has dropped an exhaust valve straight through a piston,
That sucks! I had the same thing happen on a brand spanking new Ducati 748S I bought back in 2000. Did 500 miles over a couple of months and bang, had a valve drop straight into one cylinder. Took it back to Ducati as it was under warranty and they took 3 months to fix it. Nightmare.
Not having much luck do you? Damn, and that while not even giving it the beans:crap:

Robbie do you just need to replace that piston and the head, or the whole lot?
Was looking at the pictures and the rest look okay?
turbo ted
02-09-2014, 00:02
should be okay with one new piston with rings and new set rings for the rest with a light honing of the block
new main bearing as well and full gasket head set, the cylinder could be saved but not taking any chances lucky enough i brought a spare head with me from the uk when I moved as these valvers engines are none existence over here in Ireland,
the new cylinder head will be completely rebuilt new valve guides, seats and supertech nitride valves.
one other upgrade I did before the engine went pop fitted a new anti surge housing to the garrett gt35r which has stopped the surging now before full boost pictures added new turbo housing regards robbie
