someone told me there is a new law coming about car tax and it goes something like this ;
apparently we will have to tax cars now even if they are declared off road .
so ,say you got 3 cars 1 on the road 2 off road /sorned ,you will have to tax
all 3 of them :scared:
i googled a bit with no luck , can they really bring in a law like this ??

with insurance mate not tax!!

A new law making it an offence to own any registered vehicle without cover, used on the roads or otherwise, could lead to a new type of insurance product hitting the market.

Director of insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, Richard Mason, said that the change to the Road Safety Bill made a 'pay as you go' insurance (http://www.fairinvestment.co.uk/car_insurance.aspx) policy more viable - and called for it to be made "widely available" as soon as possible.

"The sooner it becomes widely available the better," he said.

The law has been changed following calls from the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) to clamp down on insurance evasion.

It means that any uninsured car, even if only driven on private land, will land the owner with a fine of up to £500.

Ashton West, chief executive of the MIB, said: "What is important is the requirement to systematically enforce the obligation to insure," according to Auto Industry.

"This cannot be done with the law as it currently stands as you only require insurance whilst using a vehicle."

Yes .

It has to be insured even though it is not being driven .

WTF?? I have 2 car's on my drive way that haven't moved for ages... one for 2 years....

So that would mean i would have to insure them?

One is sorned, 1 is not... the one that is not has tax for the next 3 months, and mot's for the same but i dont want to drive it anywhere so its not insured... but according to the law it would have to be insured now... or i would have to declare it sorned... more paperwork for me

i am not being funny but on the sorn document ,it clearly states
you either sorn your car or tax it otherwise you can be fined up to 1000 quidos
so it was ILLEGAL and you could be fined anyway .ITS NOT NEW !!!

again i dont see the "money making " idea behind this either .
sorn ing your car is free at the end of the day .

Just sorn any car that's not insured or in use, cash the tax in. To be fair that's what i do anyway instead of leaving the tax to expire.

Its just another stealth tax to make easy money, when people forget etc. Will be annoying when buying/selling cars.

TAX IT !!! NOT FEJECKIN INSURE IT !!!

It's money making as Brigsy says ...honest people forget .The people it's trying to target don't give a feck and will not have it registered in their name anyway ...

Dont get me wrong i know sorning a car is not hard... but why should i do this? I can insure my car for 1 day a year, get my MOT done & Tax it.

That way my car is kept road legal all the time... It can therefore be towed with the wheels touching the ground, I can also push my car off my drive and park it up whilst i move other car about.

But according to the new law i will have to Insure my car to be able to do the above.

Its another Tax on the people who are law abiding.

You think about it....
£60 For the Licence
£22P/H for lessons - The average 17 year old needs 40 hours
£35 for the Theory & Haz test (will be £45 soon)
£62 for your driving test (will be £85 soon) + only 40% pass rate and all test centres can only be withing 4% of local test centre's... so no chance of 100% pass rate
Then £500 for an a basic 1st car
£115 Road Tax
£1800 average insurance price for a 17 year old
£50 Mot

So thats over £3502 just to get the average 17 year old on the road...

Where as your local tw@ who is driving a non road legal car with out insurance, tax, licence etc is driving a car that either cost £50 or is stolen, they dont pay tax, insurance, give a f*ck about other road users, dont care if they crash into your car etc etc.

They know that if caught they are very unlikey to go to prison unless there involved in a very serious accident...

More often than not a yng person driving a car illegally rarely get's caught and yet if they do they only get fined £150...

Where as if i forget to sorn a car i get a automatic fine of £80 (even when the car has not been on a road)

This country is f*cked up!

i dont think you get my point mate .
the important line there was SORN not the TAX . if you are taxing a car
that means you are intending to drive it on the road ,i dont know how
it works where you live but over here ,you cant tax a car without mot or insurance .
so forget the TAX bit now .

coming to SORN ,as i said earlier its an offence to be a registered keeper
of a car and not to sorn it if not being driven . so you have to SORN the god damm
cars if you are not driving them .
