Hi all
Ive got myself some new wheels 13 x 7" but there catching on the front calipers just wondering who's had this issue and if anyone's ground down the caliper and how much it would be safe to take off. Thanks for any help

Hi mate, what wheels have you got? Where are they catching?

Can't remember the name of them. But seems to be scraping top of caliper . Here's a pic of wheels but don't have a pic of other side.

I think a 2-3 mm might do it?

Are you sure it's not the weights?

Hello mate no first wheel I tried was one that was spot on on the balancer no weights at all.

Have you jacked her up and exactly checked the catching area?

Bit strange why they catch, how bad is it?

I know you want to hear "yet sure it'll be fine" but I'm sure you could just a bit I know a guy that had done this before.. He's still around :) it's not ideal but I'm sure it would be fine just don't go mental on it..

She was jacked up when I checked it. Cool cheers for advice out comes the grinder Monday then :)

It really depends on how much you're removing. If you affect the integrity of the caliper body and it breaks under high braking load, it could certainly lead to an unwanted situation... and IIRC from when others have done this, there isn't a huge amount to play around with in certain areas on the calipers.

Maybe, if it's only a small amount, do one side and see if it's ok (whatever that means), with half a mind on sourcing a replacement.

Of course you could have an engineering firm route out 2mm from the inside of the wheels but you never know how much is too much there either :agree:

Edit - lovely wheels btw. If you get them on, please post up pics :)

Yeah ive was pondering about the grinding today will have to see but like nottswoody was saying is it the weights but ive only tried on the one straight wheel the others have a few weights on them so prob with my luck they'll catch like a pig will have to look again monday but yeah soon as there on ill post a pic and how I managed it lol. Cars been off the road for six months mot Monday then suss out me new wheelies

I had to do this to my calipers due to the weights catching only needed to take off about 2mm max of caliper top to allow clearance for the weights and it was fine, just take your time and keep taking the wheel on and off to check and make sure it spins freely with no catching, my brakes seem fine not had any problems at all.

Also remember to cover up your bodywork as you really don't want the metal from the angle grinder melting into your paint :agree: Also some high temp paint for after the job would finish it up nice:agree:

Ok thanks for the heads up james5

Evening all
had a go with the grinder prob took off at least 2mm of paint and prob 2-3 mm of caliper fits good now but rears def going to need spacers prob 3-4mm ones took a couple of mill off with the grinder for the sake of it but now does anyone know a good place to get longer bolts and some 60.1 spacers 3 or 4 mm thick many thanks

I thought the rears were ok? Shame.

When you say you took 2mm of paint off, you mean off your calipers? i.e. they were painted?

If you're going to put spacers on, best to do it on all four wheels from a looks perspective. Why are they needed though, is the offset wrong? I mean are the rear calipers touching the rear of the wheel face?

3-4mm spacers may not need longer bolts but if you want to be sure, just take an existing bolt into a local fasteners and ask them to sort you out.

I did a bit tonight put 5mm spacers on the back and a little grinding it went on so now I'm going to get some for the front too like you say keep it all looking straighter

I bought them off ebay and was listed to fit the five but there's plenty of clearance now with spacers so happy days I find everything for the five needs a bit of modding never easy aye

Wheels look like zenders, would go down the spacer route before getting too grinder happy mate. The set of 15's on the 11 just foul the calipers without spacers, they are only a few mm however with them fitted they do not catch at all. ;)

I had thought they were catching due to the internal diameter of the wheel rather than on the reverse of the wheel face (i.e. the back of the spokes). So spacers wouldn't make a difference.

Looking at what Matt has said though, it's difficult to understand where these wheels are catching or whether the problems are different front vs rear.

Mattw

They were catching on the internal diameter bit so a bit off the outside of the caliper then on with the spacers (Sunday) and wahooo jobs a gooden.

Trevhib

Cool. :agree:

Oh, so if it was the internal diameter of the wheel that was the problem (hence requiring caliper grinding), why are the spacers required?

Mattw

Trev. This is a night mare to explain without pics.
Front wheels were catching the internal bit of wheel and the rears had to have 5mm spacers just to get the caliper away from the spokes as you said. So I'll be fitting 6mm spacers all round tomorrow repainting calipers jobs agooden.:):agree:
