View Full Version : mk1 escort 172 engine conversion???
Hi folk im thinkin of buy a mk1 escort off my neighbour as he having money problems:-(. The pinto engine that is in it is scrap but I have a damaged 172 my old car lying and was thinking of pairing the two up.. In two minds to run the engine on carbs or keep the injection. But the gearbox is the big problem I think it's going to be the head ache. Any ideas of what fits or is it going to be more hassle than its worth?? Will stick a pic up of it shortly it's not the cleanest but would just be a bit of fun. Any info would be great...

You should be able to use the gearbox from a Volvo 340 or 360?
Ford boys will have a melt down over this wohahahaha fair play if you can do it tho

Here's a few links to 340s using Valver and Williams lumps (F7R). The original cars used the 1.7 8v (F2N) Renault lump.

You get the drift. (see what I did there?....)
Good stuff men cheers just what i needed to no. What yous think about carbs or injection? There mite be a set of twin webbers 40's or 45's i think. Its just a wee idea at the minute but this makes it a bit more interesting. Its just goin to get abuse to be honest and the 172 engine was fit enough in the clio. If i go carbs does any one know how to do away with the de-phaser pully or just leave it in there along with the solenoid?? I no a few Ford men with escorts and they run pintos and one a Vauxhall red top so would be nice to give them a run for there money...
This could be interesting to show the ford boys and see their faces  go supercharger on it, then will pull like a train :smokin:
My mate has got 2.1 pinto 45s big valve head fast road cam hes kicking out 180bhp in his mk1
Other mate has mk 2 standard zetec 45 throttle bodies and that's 180 bhp and they can shift but the Clio lump will defo be interesting.

Would certainly make a fun weapon with the 172 nugget however if you want an easier conversion ie bits all off the shelf then get the escort and put a zetec in. Retro ford have all the bits to get engine in and everything there after.
I got a mk 2 awaiting the treatment with an st170 engine out of a focus. Gunna put some bike itbs on as there cheap and will go onto the standard inlet manifold with a little fettling. Can't wait to get on with the project! Go get the scort, flog the 172 and get an st 170!

Thing is zetecs are crap! I would go f4rt, 300hp easy. Problem is the gearbox strength. Not sure what the volvo can take. :D

Also the dephaser can be nade redundant by blocking the oil galleries in the cam. If you can use the 172 ecu and loom(preferably phase 1) I would leave it all fuel injected.

Whats wrong with Zetecs smarty pants? good cheap way of getting a car to go sideways! Care to elaborate before i make the possible mistake of fitting one?

It's a ford and I'm biased!:D everything I read on zetecs I'm never really impressed with the power outputs. They all seem to 150 to 170 bhp in n/a form and that's with a little tuning. An f Series Renault can be double that with a turbo. F7p is quite a cheap engine and has a decent bottom end.
You could mate an Omega box to the Volvo prop and diff? Maybe get an adaptor plate made up to bolt the Reno engine to it all..

Make sure you butcher the shell to make it all fit then put it on passionford :)
It will take some serious skill and hours to pull the swap off.I just hope you do it as I've heard this sort of story a million times and most people sack it off mid way due to the time money and effort which is probably a sensible move!!
Theirs no cheap or easy way to do any engine swap that's for sure
