First post!

Hi all, I thought I'd rejoin on here after being a member about 13 years ago, when I owned my 1st gtt at the age of 17.

I've been wanting another gtt ever since, but my interest in classic minis has kept me too occupied to get another. Its now at the point where it's almost too much for the road, (too much boost), so its track use only for that now. so I'm looking at buying another 5 for the road, that I am going to try and keep as practical as possible! :D

I'll no doubt be asking for some advice very soon.

Here's some pictures of the mini. Ive been looking on the build page on here, and it looks like its a bit of a gamble whether its rotten or not. Especially under the sills, where it can't be seen? I remember my old one was rotten, on the sills and bumper mounts...looking forward to getting back into one now though!

In short, it an A series with a 16v bike head, fully sequential injection, running about 30psi at the moment, as my map sensor on my ecu only went that far. I've now got a 4bar external map sensor so hopefully stop it cutting on boost spikes above 30. The gearbox is a project over the past few years, and pretty much ready to go in. It's a combination of a mini casing with a Honda VFR gearset, with some custom shafts and modified casings.

After its recent respray, and bulkhead mods.

This picture is about 6 years old. It looks much the same, ive got different wheels and bonnet now, fibreglass seats, and dash, and it's about 150kgs lighter now too.

Unfortunately the mk1 has to go to fund a GTT, but it just doesn't get used, obviously keeping the turbo mini though.

Ideally I'd like something with a decent body, as I no longer have the space to spray. But also hoping to use this as my daily drive. :D

Holy hell that's a monster! What sort of power are you getting from it. Did you do all the labour yourself?

Thanks, it usually surprises the mot tester. :) yeah i did all the fab work on the shell, engine and box.

I'm not exactly sure on power, as i usually map it on the road after making a few changes, so its been about 4 years since the last RR session. It used to be 150bhp @ 10psi on a 8:1 CR, but its now on 9:1 CR @ 30 psi with good inlet temps, so I am hoping the new spec to be between 250-270bhp when I get it on the rollers.

Thats mad. I was heavily into classic minis when I was 17-22 years old, rebuilt a few of them and even was working for a local mini specialist for a while. In fact, that was the reason I went and got a 5 GTT, as classic mini`s started getting very expensive if you wanted more than 100bhp. I seem to recall the metro turbos were limited at about 100bhp as that was the most the gearbox`s could handle. So I decided the cheapest option was to sell my mini off and buy 5 GTT instead.

The only mini 16v heads back then were the KAD ones which werent cheap and you had to either use solid engine mounts to lower the lump in the bay to clear a stock bonet, or run with a half opened bonnet to clear the head.

Awesome how things have moved on. Is that a BMW head? And looks like a sierra cosworth intercooler, and am I right in that they are 10inch weller wheels your running with stock brakes?!!

Your right though, 5`s do seem to rot, but not any worse than classic minis do! :laugh:

Theres always a few out there and prices do vary drastically. Id be buying from a club member or enthusiast if possible. They do tend to rot in the sills, and around the jacking points, easy enough to check though, get a screw driver and stab away. Check the front foot wells to see if any rot come through. Rear & front bumper mounts are easy to feel with your fingers (unless back of cars been lowered a huge amount). At least with the 5, all these bits are hidden visually by the bodykit, so if you do weld them up, you dont then have to start respraying the car.

Other places they tend to go are around the windows - bottom of front screen, bottom of back screen and the rear 1/4 panel windows.

I've got a few vids of it on YouTube the quarter mile etc..I'll have a look for them. yep still on 10s using cooper s brakes, although i plan to fit some ally six pots on the front when the engine goes back in as i cooked them after 2 laps of castle combe.

the head is off the bmw motorbikes, k series (old police bikes).

I've called up about a few 5's, but all seem to to need bodywork, obviously no where near as much as most minis though! my mk1 needed 37new panels i think it was, only the front and rear bulkhead and rear panel was left from original shell. i don't mind bodywork, buy i no longer have anywhere to spray so im hoping to find something that just needs mechanical work doing...but i don't think that's likely!

The 10" Cooper S brakes arnt too bad, I was running them on my last mini. Most people tend to go for the 4 pots from early metro turbos as they bolt straight on with their vented discs etc. Would mean moving upto 12" wheels though, but if you went for the normal "Minilite" style ones they would keep the car looking pretty stock.

Heres's a vid on 15psi at avon park, my exhaust gasket blew on the way to the show so that was all the boost I could run at the time. Mine is at 3:30. My best quarter was 13.2 @ 115mph that weekend, so looking forward to some full boost runs next year. I am hoping to get into the mid 12s.

After having a 5GTT as a daily for about 9 years I decided it was time for a change! I am starting to regret it though after a year without one! My 172 just doesnt tick all the boxes!
