You will need a laptop with a serial port on, or can get a USB to serial convertor

Or just use any serial to usb cable you can find

When I was searching never found one which was long enough.

Bigfoot, I guess in the absence of a decent length serial to USB cable the USB end of the lead can be extended by being joined to another USB cable using a female to female adapter without too much hassle. Or indeed, you can buy female to male USB extension leads that run to very long lengths. All very affordable :agree:

Just convert the end to suit, for a quid.

Just looking at the 420d:

http://www.efi-parts.co.uk/i/adaptronic_select_440_front.jpg

It's difficult to see what USB connection that is under 'PC'. It almost looks like 'USB Mini B' rather than 'USB Micro B'.

If it turned out to be 'Mini' rather than 'Micro', then you'd need one of these instead.

Here is the guide from Wikipedia:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d6/Usb_connectors.JPG/400px-Usb_connectors.JPG

Left to right (ruler in centimeters):

Micro-B plug
UC-E6 proprietary (non-USB) plug
Mini-B plug
Standard-A receptacle (upside down)
Standard-A plug
Standard-B plug

If you're struggling with the cabling at this level, I'd advise getting someone to do the install :agree:

Cheers trev

Second from the left.. It's up and running I just want to see the map and fault find.. It splutters every now and then scoff says plug it in run the programme off adaptronics web site press f2 and copy the map send it to him and he will sort it then re upload the adjusted map.. My local PC place won't go near it because it's "in my car" I told him I only want the leads

If ever in doubt guys just drop me an email. Work emails are read and relied to daily :)

You worked it out Jack, its a standard mini USB. No serial or other adapters required.
