a friends offered tp procure a phase one gt turbo in black. he lives in coventry and the car is a matt black one with bucket seat no rear seats, dont know if its got a roll cage. apparently the current owner could not engage the gears and after being advised his gearbox was gone, bought another box and upon fitting still has the same problem. the car has a huge front mount intercooler and a dump valve. still awaiting pics tommorow and milage details etc.

i was hoping this could just be the clutch cable stretched or pedal issue, although could be alot worse i suppose flywheel clutch etc. the car is a Dreg matt black one, i know its difficult without the reg number dont suppose anyone seen this car before or knows any previous owners.

Was it on eBay after Christmas?

Matte black phase 1 rings a bell for sure

Could just be a case of the linkage not on correct or bent? Surely if you go to all the trouble of swapping a gear box you would check the clutch regardless, but I guess maybe not? If it isn't the gear stick link or cable, although you can look and get some one to press to the clutch and see for yourself if the arm moves, then could just be the clutch then which is cheap fix if you know what your doing. :agree:

you could be right goobie, the guy who owns the car is a young kid and doesnt really know much about them...i know i had a similar problem if the clutch cable stretch, you put your foot to the floor and it doesnt engage the gears. cant really check it as im doing a blind swap for my honda civic coupe. the main thing it starts and doesnt smoke, got to be worth a punt. ;)

If you are doing a blind swap I would get as many pictures as possible of all the important parts like under the car, sills, window surround etc etc to check for rust. I would also like to see a video of it running too if it were me. If you say he's young and doesn't know what he's doing mechanics wise you might spot something he's missed ;) could be lots of work needed if it's been messed about with and not done to any standard.

thanks jp my mate has heard it running and it doesnt smoke or make any funny noises. hes also gonna get his brother to whatsapp me some photos hopefully later today and the reg number. i will base my decision on these before i commit to a swap.

the civic has been in my mums garden for about 6months no good to me since my 5 is my daily. so another 5 would be welcome something to do a project on always fancied a phase 1.

good timing my friend just txt me the reg...its D823 GHW.

Sounds well worth a look in the metal mate before any purchase/swap to see it with your own eyes ;)

lol he was going to put a perspex screen in to show the engine bay:rolleyes: im going to go down on wwdnesday ans see if i can get it to engage the gears. not worth a swap with my civic. going to make him a cheeky cash offer. ita been off the rd since end of last year. i assume he had no takers on ebay.

That bonnet vent!!

Ask him, did he do it with his eyes closed?

Like Goobie says, it's easily replaceable at least.

Can you get pictures of the underneath? That would be my concern as if you can't sort the rust yourself it could end up being expensive.
