Noticed two indentations on steering rack is this normal

No that's not normal mate. Nice to see your cracking on with it at a quick time. And I bet that roof weighed a tonne
Prob why I have the indentations we had a black bag full of bodge. Wonder what has caused this then any ideas or were too start looking noticed the top of the suspension cups were sitting a bit pissed both sides photo below http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y445/Kevc66/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-04/8A4A90EF-0FD4-47A3-A39D-F2B64A4C500A_zpsyliqscxe.jpg (http://s1275.photobucket.com/user/Kevc66/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-04/8A4A90EF-0FD4-47A3-A39D-F2B64A4C500A_zpsyliqscxe.jpg.html)
Apart from it looks like only one bolt is hold the strut in place, these are supposed to be like that, only the phase one was centred to the hole.
Cheers thought they had to be centred that's a relief now to work out what the two indentations on the steering rack are off
Is there any other publications apart from the Haynes I have the light blue on but does not really have much on the turbo model. Is it an easy job to refurb the calipers as mine are seized
Yeah, fronts are easy, the rears can be a little tricky as has the handbrake meacnusim built in. :)
Cool. Went down too Southampton today and saw mike sorted out a roof and some other little bits to be packed up and shipped up too Newcastle top bloke well worth the trip. Hopefully will get roof welded on next weekend and can start the body work on the meantime can get too work on the engine. Think the dents on the steering rack has been a failed rear mount in the past so will see what they are like when I get them off and clean up

As for the identations on the rack, possibly a sheared engine mount causing the lump to rock into it???
Well done for taking it on as a project buddy. I'd probably have steered well clear of that myself.
Keep the pics and updates flowing :agree:
Starting to wish I had mate found some more rot today along the scuttle panel again covered with filler the rear arches are shot the body kit is a write off was repaired with cardboard and filler so has gone I the bin a project that was going too take a fee month now may take a few year at this rate scared to get the sander and screwdriver out as I jUst keep finding holes

Good work mate, what are the sills and jacking points like? :agree: :)
Fuel tank out now front sub frame next most of the brackets from tank were rotten and snapped off in process of removal
Can I just remove rear subframe
Without removing torsion bars just drop the lot also will the rear jacking points hold the weight for a few weeks/ months
Can I just remove rear subframe

The rear axle is all one piece. All you need todo is disconnect the brake hoses and handbrake cables then it's just four bolts and off it goes. :agree: Warning though, make sure you got some one inside the car with a spanner/socket holding the top side of the bolts or they will spin with the locater bracket and tear the thin metal of the shell. :crap:
Little tip, clean the threaded section that exposed on the underside as much as possible before starting as will be very stiff and take ages to unwind as pretty long bolts. Tapping thread kit good for this if have one to hand.
Cheers for the advise I have left the sub frame for now as sick of looking at that roof so have started too drill out spot welds http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y445/Kevc66/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-04/D94590B7-1A8B-444F-9F34-3465739598B6_zpsieu0sy7p.jpg (http://s1275.photobucket.com/user/Kevc66/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-04/D94590B7-1A8B-444F-9F34-3465739598B6_zpsieu0sy7p.jpg.html)
Can't find where they are welded at back of roof any ideas?
Got a new drill but today so I can cut the spot weld and not go all the way through like I have done once roof off will have to repair that sill
Got a new drill but today so I can cut the spot weld and not go all the way through like I have done once roof off will have to repair that sill
Was thinking that you shouldn't be drilling all the way through. Think you may find the spot welds under the rubber strip going round the boot.
Right all the guttering on the drivers side is rotten as it the rear pillar were the roof attaches and the top lip were roof attaches at front windscreen ahhhh
Front sub frame passenger side rear bolt any tips only one that would not come out can't get anything on the nut
The star bit chewed up? Drill it out?
Had somebody do that on a car I had, big hammer and socket, got it on in the end
Can't get a socket over the top bold not enough clearance got a c spanner over it but the angle it is a can't get a proper hold on it keeps popping off when turn from below
Weld another bolt on top?
Cheers sorted sub frame dropped out starting to strip back all the inner arches of the thick under seal taking ages using a heat gun and scraper scuttle panel had loads of filler on PO had repaired too patches well welded plate over existing rust then covered whole panel with filler more rust hunting tomorrow

Awesome work mate, looks pretty solid on the whole, see the roofs off with all that filler too!:):agree:
Aye that filler was a nightmare started to bare metal the engine bay and front inner wings in prep for the full bare metal respray. Quite happy that not found any rot or rust for a few days now :)
Epic!
That pic without the roof is brilliant.
The bloke you bought this from will have assumed the car was destined for the bin but looks like it might be saved against the odds!
He's right this is an epic restoration, I thought at one point that this was a certain for breaking, more power to you.
Must admit at one point it was looking like the bin the lad I got it off was a tool and I can't wait too finish just so I can show him what he could of done with it. When I told him about the state of it he basically laughed and said oh well you got it off eBay.
