Recently put a c1j in a 5 campus and I'm wanting to do a 'big brake' conversion in the front, what would people recommend?
Cheers! :D

You'll need bigger wheels than the stock ones mate. So it's not a cheap conversion.

Loving the sleeper! Drill some holes in your front bumper for your oil cooler though bud

Hi mate thanks for the quick reply,

I have bought some Williams wheels which I shall be putting on there as soon as I have them, and thank you, I was expecting to get hate for it but I love it 😏. And thanks for the advice!

Yeah I like it. It's just a bit different! Loads of gt turbos are re shelled in to campus shells. Are you going to keep the rest standard campus looking? I think u should :)

Defo get some better anchors if you're running high boost (I assume you are with the big cooler)

Yes it's a shame the wheels will ruin the standard look but there isn't a lot I can do as I feel bigger brakes are a must, but everything else will remain bog standard looking :) although I might lower it slightly just so it doesn't handle like a boat! Oh and I have a pair of escort recaros inside but other than that it looks like it could be my Nan's car ;).

Getting back to the brakes, when I have the Williams wheels on there what brakes would you recommend? And and advice on a rear disc conversion?
Cheers!

I'm sure I have Renault 21 brakes on mine.

Is imagine it would be easiest to take an already lowered rear axle from a gt turbo and fit it to yours. Does the camparse have drums as standard on the rear? Because you'd kill two birds with one stone :)

I will have to have a good look around for some 21 calipers and carriers, if you know of any let me know!

Also I do have drums yes and I did think a whole axle would Be the way to go but I'm yet to find one. I guess I could pull one off a gtt that's breaking.
My thread in technical discussions about the fueling problem hasn't had any response, should I repost it in this section?

Look on ebay mate there is loads floating round.

Do you want to buy one with me to break as I'm thinking about loosing my roll cage and going back to an o.e interior.

It does buddy, did you refresh the page?

To do the 21 disc swap you will need gt calipers, caliper extender brackets and then fit it all to gt hubs

Not as simple as bolting 21 stuff to the campus hubs
In my opinion fitting standard gt stuff is more than good enough ;)

Thanks for the advice mark, are gt brakes much bigger than campus on the front? I know they are discs in the back. Also do Drilled and grooved make much difference to braking efficiency or are they just for better heat disipitation?

GT brakes are alittle taller but are thicker and vented too so will work much better than standard campus ones, i would fit those on myself

You could also run Mk 1 Clio discs and cailpers, there bigger dia (258mm springs to mind but could be wrong.) and bolt on without fuss. :agree:

Probably off a 19. That was the big brake conversion back in the day

Some 21's were 4 stud, the disc's used for the big disc conversion were off a basic model R21 I believe, think someone posted up on here a while ago what model they come off

Ahhhh that's good to know! I was told it was the 19. I want some 4 studs for my 21.

I have a set of mk1 RSI carriers and calipers, would they be a straight for (obviously replacing pads and discs?

Worth having a try, only thing i am thinking is different is the hubs. The hubs on an RSI are almost identical to the 5 gt so you may need the hubs too

Are you going to use it on track?
I would just stick standard GTTurbo stuff on, as already mentioned, it would mean you can keep the 13's on there :agree:

Remember the GTTurbo race cars ran with standard brakes under 13's for decades - and that was on slicks. It was not ideal - temperatures will be higher, and wear will be quicker, but it does the job.
I ran 239 front discs on my Mk1 golf race car for a while - the braking performance was even good enough for racing, but the competition pads wore out quickly - going to 280mm with ducts changed that.

For road use; decent pads, discs and fluid should be up to it.

You may also want to change the old rubber brake line hoses for new ones or for PTFE in metal braid. You'll get a much sharper pedal with less travel.

If you're fitting bigger front discs you need to move the rear brake compensator forward to give more bias to the rears. Mine was cable tied maximum forward and that might not have been quite enough.

4 tyres stop the car, not two huge front discs. You need to keep the rear brakes taking part in the process, they do maybe 20% of the stopping. They can do more in the wet as there's not the weight transfer forwards to press the front tyres down harder but you'd need a manual bias valve to adjust between wet and dry weather.

Don't the Clio hubs have a larger wheel bearing?

With harder springs on my 5GTT new OE bearings wore out in 11,000 miles.

The bigger bearings may extend that MTBF?

:agree:

valver/williams hubs fit the gtt but have bigger bearings, sure 172 are bigger again and have a wider foot where the strut bolts on to the hub carrier, not sure if pcd/ camber angle changes also on those:scratch:

bb and k tec back in the day used different brake discs and extender bracket off sets to suit,

r21 txe was one of them and lancia also did a 285 disc, all though i cant remember the model , searched through a brake disc book a few years back, which gave every pcd/offset and diameter for almost every car :)
