one guy last week says he used to own a black raider, thing is its not the first time someone has mentioned a black raider? do they exist?

Thanks for all the great comments guys, i was really chuffed to read them, i think she did us all proud & hopefully made some non RTOC people think about these little french fighters again!! :wasntme::wasntme:

Just to clarify a few things, the car was fitted with 4 brand new Uniroyal's in original 195 55 13 fitment days before the shoot so the tyres weren't old or off theyre just CRAP tyres :crap: and even on the day Jason said to me that it was the tyres that let the car down.

Secondly thanks to Andrew Cooke she was blessed with some Ferrodo DS2500 brake pads prior to that day also so the brakes were feeling at their best.

Finally the boost is set at 15psi as indicated on my profile so she was going well alright.

I think on another dry day it would have been much much closer.

Anyway it certainly sounded better, did anyone hear the GTT Angry Burble as it went past camera! Loved it!!

I must say I thought the Raider was standard and only running 8-10 psi so I'm a little surprised it didn't beat the Twingo? I guess those Uniroyal tyres must be pretty bad!

Either way the Raider looked excellent and sounded amazing - I know which car I'd rather have!

Never had a problem running Uniroyals on track with ol' Trusty, come rain or shine.

Therefore, I conclude Plato must be a cr8p driver then ;) :D

RussellT
13-01-2009, 11:10
brand new Uniroyals in the rain worse than crap IMO and she would have probably gone quicker with less boost. Also it was a very narrow track to be fair to Mr Plato he wouldnt want to bin a punters car but would have less qualms with the Twingo. Also no doubt the Twingo has all sorts of electronic driver aids which will be a big advantage in the wet.

195/45 on a 15 would have made a massive difference. But in the end my abiding memory will be Jason's smile driving the Raider. :D

Nothing wrong with Toyo's, they do the job and for the money you wont get no better.

I only ever put toyos on my toy cars, i havent had any issue's with them, Mart runs them on his Evo and that does a low 9min lap round the Nurburgring.

Mart needs to get R888's on the EVO and drop those jankie road tyres which are cr*p :D then get some time perfecting the limits of the car and then watch that time F A L L

Std ish clio 172 cup can do a 9 min lap :P

THe later T1-R are a bit better and for the money quite good but once you drive on the R888's they just dont do it - cant wait for the revised track tyres to be released in my sizes so I can live with them in the wet also lol

The RenaultSport Twingo is a 1.6 VVT 133BHP iirc

Non turbo. The Renault Twingo GT is the 1.2 Turbo with 100BHP iirc.

Channel 5 Catch up or what ever its called didnt work on my laptop for some reason...

So instead I watched it on YouTube.

Shame the shoot out was only 4 minutes long, it would have been good if they had done a longer review on the cars.

I agree with comments, and I have driven the Twingo RS. 5's are renowned for being pants in the wet on original rubber.

In the try it WOULD have been a different story.

My Raider even gave my 172 a run for its money.

Considering, thats a 20 year old 1.4 Turbo vs a modern age 172BHP 2.0 Clio it surprised me.

You put any other 20 year old hot hatch against its modern day rival and it would get crucified..

But it was great to watch Steves car going round being driven by Jason...

Anyone seen the comments from Matthew Tiller has made on the on the following Fifth Gear streaming link??

LINK (http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain.jsp?mnk=410&thanks=comment&id=343)

To save you the bother of clicking there have a read below:

Matthew Tiller 14 January 2009 14:07

Hello,

A real shame, I thought, that the Fifth Gear team chose to race the new Twingo against a 5 Turbo with knackered old tyres as I don't think the challenge provided a fair reflection of the cars performance. There are plenty of well maintained Fives out there running on new tyres (mine for one). I know I shouldn't take it personally but I have! Additionally ,a final point is that when the R5 left the factory the turbo was set to boost at a very conservative 6psi and will run comfortably at pressures of up to 12psi without causing damage or excessive wear to other components.

So, please conduct the same test only this time use my car which standard throughout (no mods) and has a brand spanking set of tyres.

Are you a member of the RTOC Matthew??

If so I look forward to discussing your criticisms of my car at the next RTOC meet....

Does anyone know the :sourgrapes: smiley?? :dearme:

Anyone thought about sending an invite to Fifth Gear for our ND? Even if they say no, at least it kinda shows we appreciate the fact they at least featured a gtt, even if it was comparing it to its newer brother.

I recieved this message through YouTube:

Hi Steve,

Did you enjoy the shootout then?

Mark (the director)

So following on from Mart's post I've replied with the following:

Hi Mark,

Yeah the shootout was FANTASTIC mate!!

Top marks for getting the No Bling at the Ring 07 Sticker in, that made me & half the owners club chuckle alright!! :-D

As a thank you we'd like to invite Fifth Gear to one of the Renault Turbo Owners Club days if you would be interested?? We've two planned for this year, a day at Santa Pod Raceway & then a Day at Mallory Park?? Maybe you could make use of one of our events for a feature on the show or have a hot hatch shootout or something???

We'd certainly like the opportunity to have a re-match versus the Twingo on a dry track someday!!

If you're interested or we/I can help you any further please don't hesitate to contact me?

Regards

Steve

Will let you know if I get a response?!

Matthew Tiller - What a complete & utter fecking cheese flavoured prick of the highest order.

At 6psi, the Twingo would've definitely trounced the gtt, let alone giving it a reasonable crack running 1bar, and to be fair, in the wet, on standard 13" rims, it's not really gonna make that much difference which tyre is being used; the Twingo would probably still win.

They also left the factory with anything from 5-10psi boost (sharky French tolerances), and they'll run considerably more than 12psi without inflicting damage or excessive wear if set up correctly.

It would be a fairer test in the dry, but regardless, the motor got featured on tv, which is always a nice thing to see, and it put on a bloody good show considering the technology of a gtt is 25 years old at best.

Well done Steve with the 'invite'. Let's hope they reply back :)

love your 5 steve
and regardless of any road test the 5 is better in so many ways especially with regards to looks and road presences to tunibility, the twingo is definatly aimed for the young 18 year olds wheres as the 5 has a much wider audience FACT! :)

Disagree. Most people who don't know much about cars (which is the vast majority of people) just see it as an old chav mobile. That's from my experience anyway.

:dearme:

I am the person in question and I made the post on the Fifth Gear website.

I would like to say that I made my comments in reference only to the information presented on the Fifth Gear programme where they stated that the tyres were "old rubber".

After reading the posts on this site it is clear that I made my comments whilst not being in possesion of the facts and I now feel stupid for doing so. I therefore apologise unreservedly.

I did however think that your car looked stunning on the programme and I was extremely happy that the R5gtt was featured on prime time national TV. Anybody who successfully raises the profile of this beautiful french beast deserves a massive pat on the back imo.

So please accept my apology, it was never my intention to cause offence to a fellow 5 turbo owner.

Hello Mart,

I can't say I've ever been refered to as a complete & utter fecking cheese flavoured prick of the highest order before, but I guess there's always a first time.

I think you may have been a little bit quick to jump down my throat though, although I do now understand that the comments I made on the Fifth Gear website may have caused offence to yourself, steve and other, better informed, users of this site and for that I am sorry. In future I will refrain from making ill informed comments about other peoples cars!

As for the Information regarding the boost settings on the GT after leaving the factory etc. I was only going on information provided to me by various sources such as Mark Fish who used to race the R5GTT and the guy at CGB Motorsport. It is my understanding that although it is possible to run the standard 5 turbo at pressures of up to 15psi without causing things to explode/break/drop off, this may result in, for example, the clutch wearing out significantly quicker than it would with the boost set lower.

Am I wrong? If I am then I will be forced to take my motor back to Mr Fish and have the boost ramped up immediately.

Matt you'll soon learn on this website how to do all the work yourself & save taking it to any tuners.

You'll get nothing but respect from Mart :mart: when he see's your postings on here but he's been around these cars since nelson was a boy hence the reason he's got his own smiley -->:mart: & knows an awful lot.

Matthew, welcome to the club.

Don't take my comments to heart too much; I wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to gtt's & the rtoc, simply because I have a strong passion for them both, and thus it p1sses me off no end when I see one or the other being bad mouthed. Your post on 5th Gear's forum came across as arrogant with a touch of 'my car is better than yours' vibe to it, although, in hindsight, now you've posted on here & shown true colours, maybe that isn't the case after all.

Mark's a great guy, and for sure knows the gtt's inside out, but in fairness he only ever built them for racing (of which he's done an awesome job over the years), yet maybe he didn't/hasn't fully explored the power potential of the c1j. If that were the case, as a tongue in cheek example, I'm sure we'd have seen a Mark Fish prepared gtt running 11's or 12's at the Pod before now.

Sure, running more power than o.e will always have a detrimental effect on the engine & running gear; that can be said of any car, but there's plenty of gtt's out there running double the o.e power figure, that are as reliable as the day they left the factory. For sure, there's plenty of aftermarket parts available to cope with the increase in power, although it's possible to get good power levels retaining/using o.e parts - Pistons & liners being a good example there.

Anyway, fair play for stepping up & showing face on here, and as you'll find out over time, it's a happy place to be, and that I'm not so much the obnoxious **** that you're probably thinking I am from first impressions.

Look forward to seeing those pic's of your gtt.
