View Full Version : Oil Pressure

So after putting my Engine back together I'm having a bout of paranoia about the oil pressure:scratch:

I have always religiously ran either 15-50 or 10-60 fully synth Mobil 1 oil, for as long as I can remember.

After doing a lot of reading and taking on board other peoples opinions I have decided to go for 10-40 semi synth this time round.

However I seem to be making less oil pressure on a cold engine at idle with the 10-40, it just about makes 55psi, but drops quite quickly within a minuit or so to 40psi on idle I can only assume as the oil starts to get a bit of heat. this is taken from the turbo outlet on the front of the block, the one way valve has been removed and the gauge is a mechanical one. Also the pump isn't shimmed as I'm still running the standard oil cooler.

Before with the 10-60 I used to get 60psi on cold idle and it would take quite a while to drop down to 40psi.

I haven't had it up to temp properly yet as it hasn't been driven as it's not insured.

Is this normal? Or am I worrying about nothing.

Get some 10/60 in. I damaged a turbo with 35-40psi on a hot engine. You can shim the prv on the pump with standard oilcooler, i had no problems. One small sprung washer is enough.

What 10/60 do you use Jon?

Just took it for a little drive and got the oil 10-40 semi synth up to temp.

I got 15psi at idle and 40psi at 3k:disagree:

It didn't rise much above 40psi even at high revs.:(

Going to change the oil for 10-60 to see if it makes a difference the book states just under 44 psi at 3k when warm. I hope it does the trick otherwise it's sump off again

I only get about that, I wouldn't worry.

Just concerned as I have heard loads of people say you want 45psi at 3k, and the book says 43.7 psi, don't want my turbo shatting it's self at 24psi.

You will be fine philis , as riki would say

Still getting paranoid after all these years! :ashamed:

I just want the thing to stay in one piece until it does a 12 second run.

Slapped some 10-60 in today and I now have 60lb cold at idle compared to the 55psi I had before then as it gets a bit of heat it drops to 45psi compared to the 40psi before so fingers crossed if the 5psi increase happens when up to temp I won't be worried when it's constantly being spanked to 7k rpm and beyond!

10/60 as brigsy says :)

If you're measuring oil pressure right at the turbo inlet then expect a lower reading, you'll have a bit more at the engine block. 45psi's fine though, nothing to worry about Phil.

This is something I've often wondered. My take off is right above the turbo and I'm thinking it could possibly show less here as its post one way valve? Or is there another reason. I get circa 40psi when hot.

What brand are you guys using for 10w 60 oil? Where from?

I use Mobil 1 get it from my local car spares shop for £38, sure the guy is under charging me.

I have read somewhere that after the one way valve gives less pressure for sure about 3 to 5 psi.

My gauge is a cgb one it goes in place of the standard pressure sensor, so that's before the one way valve. I lunked said valve ages ago after hearing the stories of them sticking and mullering blowers :disagree:

Interesting, I've never heard anything about the difference in pressure pre/post one way valve, it was just an assumption I made. :agree:

Will have to try some of that oil :)

My brothers car has a problem when accelerating the gauge goes down 5psi or so and when he lifts off it goes back up!

Any one had this before?

Yes that was happening to me before I stripped the lump, only on a long motorway run when the oil was hot, I found loads of exhaust paste in the sump and the big ends were lightly scored, the mains were fine however as was the cam/followers.

I haven't tested it properly yet to see if they were the issue.

Cheers phil. I guessed he must have a restriction somewhere as the flow rate increases the pressure is dropping off

Millers cfs. Supposed to be good stuff? Cheap ish from my local motor factors.
