View Full Version : Leaky Gearbox

Got a slow oil leak from my gear box in location A and I think B although this might be getting covered in oil from the drip out of A.

questions:
1. Is there a seal that can be replaced inside the box to stop the leak.
2. Will I be able to replace said seal in my home workshop without some special tool or gearbox part falling out that won't go back in again etc...?

B is just a pivot, shouldn't be leaking from there. You can get leaking from point A.

Renault used to sell a kit that enabled the selector fork boot (A) to be replaced in situ without the need to split the box. Pop into to your local parts dept and ask the question.

Are you 100% sure it's trans fluid leaking from there and not engine oil running down from above?

The oil was clean golden oil same as what came out when I drained the box, my engine oil was black so I think it is the trans fluid.

You can tell the trans oil by its smell, God it's horrid.

its definitely trans oil leaking out the box.

I've seen these seal kits, I'm guessing the rod oil seal is the one I want to replace if I split the box.

I also found this info on the repair kit:

I don't think the eBay item is the correct item, the main "seal" is cut in half so it can go round the selector rod and be pushed up and home into the box, 2 O rings complete the seal.

The TND site is the right item. Instruction #7 talks about the 2 half shells and the 2nd image shows them going round the selector.

Renault supply this kit, doubtful you will get it on eBay.

*Edit*

Just read the yawn thread, looks like Renault no longer supply and may be a direct order on TND France now. Only way to know for sure is go to Renault and ask! Wilson's in Epsom are good and helpful.

Re-read your post too, not sure if the eBay item is the right seal if you decide to split the box (thought you meant was this the repair kit). You're best bet is to talk to Matt (code red) as he is a gearbox guru :)

I was looking at the ebay kit as the correct internal replacement, ie If I split the box and do it properly etc...The TND site shows the kit you suggested I think, the posts on cliosport seem to think Renault don't supply the kit in the uk any more and you need to buy it direct from TND in france. I emailed them they cost 53.30 Euro delivered to the UK.

For 50 odd euro it's got to be worth a shot fixing it in situ rather than pulling the lot? (IMO)

If the box is getting a bit tired and is in need of a rebuild anyway it may be worth pulling it and stripping it it down but for just that one seal it seems a bit extreme?

The box is off the car at the moment so would be very easy to strip it down, my main concern is how much of a job is it to strip it down to replace that one seal? If it would only take a couple of hours then I'd rather buy the £10 seal than spend 50 Euro

Not sure mate, never stripped a box so can't say for sure.

You may get away with leaving the main and counter shafts in situ and working around them or the lot may need to be removed!

Again, talk to Matt.

Looks pretty scary indeed!

Section 21 covers the selector fork control rod (item 58 on the 1st picture looks to be the seal and boot), if you can get to it without the need to do a full strip down it doesn't look that involved! (Especially if you don't replace the bearing it mentions)

A lot of the time I found it beneficial to check the free play of the selector rod in the gearbox, as if its worn it will wear the new seals out.
If it's got a bit of side movement it will leak again.
Not a terrible job to strip a JB/C gearbox, just need a couple of special tools.

Matt, if I want to change said oil seal will I need special tools?

To get the 5th gear cluster off you need a tool to pull the synchro hub off and it's very easy to chip teeth off the fixed 5th gear when removing it from the shaft.
Plus if you pull the cover off too quick the detent springs and balls shoot across the room:laugh:
Apart from that its not too bad.

Most JB3 and JC5 gearboxes leak from the selector shaft, but in 99% of cases it's a seep and therefore easy to live with as you can just wipe it every two or three days.

The TND Kit is the way forward, but the last time I tried to order the kit, they would only take a bank transfer which occurred a high fee. That was a couple of years ago now, so may be different now.

To replace the original seal you need to pull the box apart, pull the selector shaft up and out change the seal, refit the selector shaft and then rebuild the box!

The leak on mine is not massive but over a few days it will spray back when driving and cover the underside of the car with oil residue, something I don't want on my clean restoration!

I emailed TND and the kit costs 53.30 Euro, they want a bank transfer, that will end up costing £55 once charges are added by my bank. It's not loads but it's just a bit too much....

I have a plan B that will involve a DIY version of the TND kit costing about £15, I will post it up once it all goes wrong :D

I knew I had one of these kits tucked away somewhere, found it today when digging for a part for my motorbike!!

If you do go plan b and want to compare it to the kit just shout (I'm fairly local if yor are based in Carshalton as your profile suggests)
