Hello all,

I need a non-sunroof roof skin for my R5. Mike very kindly offered a complete roof from a scrap shell, but I'm worried it'll be too much work to remove the skin from the inner sections without damage.

So,

A) Has anyone here attempted removing just the skin ?

B) Does Renault show a part number for just the skin, and might that still be available from France, etc. ?

C) If someone more local to the Northwest has a good roof from an old shell they'd like to cut off at the pillars for me then I'd be happy to buy that and chance removing the skin myself.

Cheers, Chris

Isn't that an interior roof covering? As in cloth headlining?
Scoff wants the outside metal roof.
Or am I being daft? Lol

Scoff, I would go with the 2nd hand panel, it wouldn't be too hard to remove the full section. Rather than try to drill the spot welds its easier to cut the joining panels as close as possible then back-grind the edges away. That way you are left with a full panel without any holes.

Then use the same method but sacrifice your old roof to make a nice clean mating face.

I've not done a full roof but large panels such as rear quarters and its not too bad, just very time consuming to do it properly!

If you decide to go down the route of drilling spot welds I would recommend this type, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WURTH-COBALT-SPOT-WELD-DRILL-BIT-HSCO-PLUS-8mm-/310394080366 they are very accurate and if you aren't too heavy handed you can stop ibetween panels rather than plunge through both panels! They can be re-ground too. You can get them much cheaper if you shop around.

Lol, new scoof has cost me €550 last year, sadly i didn't use it in the end so it's still lying here.

Challenge is, how are we going to get it to your place if you do want to buy it?

does it have to be steel?

Oh, and you can probably just stick it on with sikaflex

Ashy, yeah, that sounds spot on (no pun intended :) )

Tutuur, I'll give you 20 euro if you can drive it over.. and fit it ? Renault yesterday said it's no longer available, but they might have been in a lazy mood ?

Andy, no, carbon would be great, but that requires a mold, which requires a good roof :(

Hasn't Hari done a carbon roof? Shipping would still be a problem though.

Lol, you're a funny guy you know that

But you could be right as they told me it was the last one i bought, hence the price....

However, taking it seriously. If there would be a possibility of shipping the thing we could always make a deal.

The roof isn't just spotwelded in place but also bonded.

Alot of work to get it off without damaging it

Ive done a mk1 R5 and the sealant was more of a bead round the inside to seal the moisture out, it didn't offer any additional joint strength! If you were trying to remove it without damaging the roof or the car I would agree but as he's not bothered about his roof or the shell from the donor roof then it'll be fairly straight forward!

We have removed a roof skin recently check my project thread scoff.

Unfortunately we wont be putting pictures of the roof being fitted until later on in the year when the car is off the stand and back on its wheels as its too high at the moment to do.

The roof is brazed in parts so we are going to braze it back on.Takes hours to remove all spot welds!!
