I think it works like the Renault 21 one, usually if you bridge the smallest resistor it'll work again. When that one goes, the whole things stops working as the current runs through the small one for all speed settings, IIRC....ie it runs thorugh 1, 1&2, or 1&2&3 for the 3 speed settings, not 1, or 2 or 3.

well nothing really to update apart from i moved the header tank today to the scuttle in front of the driver. this has freed up some space for the air filter relocation. now i need to change the gt tuning intercooler for a front mount to free up some more space. then ill be happier. im fed up with my air filter getting wet all the time, only took one pic as it started raining.

tomorrows jobs. changer cv boot. not looking forward to this. and look at oil leak.
smithyr5gt
09-01-2014, 22:04
WELLLLLL!!!!! cv boot job was a no go. spent ages getting a boot. then once i did and got home i find.... wheel bolts are held in with two turns! one bolt had snapped off in the hub. so the wheel was held in with 3 bolts and two turns each. hmmmm. then i find that the cv boot has a small hole in it and after feeling around the boot i find bits of broken metal in the boot . so the cv joint has collapsed.
so i try to find a cv joint. no not happening. i now have to find a hole shaft. find one at cgb. 79+vat. cant aford that at the mo but still need the car for work sat morning.
what now!!!!
i get a call from STEVO he has some bits i mite want. so off i go to his and he gives me two complete hubs. and some other bits. after an hour and a half chat i head home. then i get a call from a mate. (russ) after a long conversation this is the plan for tomorrow.
hes going to collect my car on a trailer. take it to his workshop and take the complete drive shaft from his r5 and put it in mine. give me his longer wheel bolts so i can drive my car safely for the first time!
its good to have friends!!!

Not good mate, couple of bits to keep you out of trouble and get it right ;) Can still get jacking point panels, think jacking on chassis rails is the way forward, just a bit crap you find these faults when only just bought it :coffee:

10-01-2014, 14:51
yeah not good. but yeah it all can be fixed.
well on another note. while i had the day free before the work starting tonight i thought id look at some other jobs.
1. loose exhaust = fixed. just came off one of the rubbers.
2. fog lights = no wires and no bulbs. so will need to sort that later.
3. oil leak = was told it was just the turbo drain pipe where it goes to the sump. WRONG! its coming from the electrical spade connector from this.
http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac18/smithy_012/new%20r5/6f87b354-1698-4ddf-b41b-4f3516c81201.jpg (http://s881.photobucket.com/user/smithy_012/media/new%20r5/6f87b354-1698-4ddf-b41b-4f3516c81201.jpg.html)
arrow points to where the spade is. but you cant see it from this photo.
solution = god knows!!!
while looking for this leak i was looking under the car at the front and found this!!!

its flapping around in the wind. now there are three threaded holes in the pick ( one just behind the pipe) what the hell is supposed to be hear covering this and why the hell isnt this done up? i don't have a trusty haynes so haven't a clue. is this yet another thing that could have killed me or at least the car?? any help would be great
That's the oil pressure switch. Fit a new one and that should solve the oil leak. Quite often they leak through the switch and out the connector.
There should be a tin shield covering the gap you've got to stop anything going into the flywheel. Think it's held on with 3 or 4 13mm bolts.
I could be completely wrong mate, but I think that's where the flywheel cover is supposed to sit

now i dont have any money left to fix and this is my only car. so im fu@ked!!! absolutely fuming!!!!!!

Did u buy it from a member on here? Contact whoever you bought it from & just voice your disappointment with the dangerous issues you've discovered. He may not even known about it if he doesn't carry out the work himself.
If he does know about it, go down and park it through his front door.

Although you can't really tell for sure what a person is like from the other side of a keyboard, Nick always came over well. The first thing you need to do is get in touch with him and calmly ask him if he has any ideas. Its a pita but it all sounds relatively easy to sort. GL.

12-01-2014, 10:19
yeah thats the thing he did seem really genuine. he may not have a clue but i know he fitted the engine in the car. so everything that is wrong he must have at some point seen. i have txt him. its all easy fixed apart from im now skint and cant aford to fix it. plus what else is wrong with it?? i have found all this from going to replace the cv boot!

Agreed. Like I said previously- someone may have carried the work out for him and tucked him up.
Main thing is that you've found the problem and can address it before anyone got hurt. Call him mate.

yeah thats also a factor. if someone else did the work. if he dosnt answer my txt by the time i go home ill call him. i know he works a lot and i dont have great signal at work.

that's the plan now. i have spoken to the guy i brought it from and he has suggested i give the mot center a call so will be doing that first thing tomorrow.
also i have managed to source the new/used parts from a very kind member on hear who live not far away. and the guy who sold me the other drive shaft.
my plan now is to take everything back off the car that i did two days ago and also the pass side drive shaft/breaks and hub and clean and inspect it all and put it all back on. need to tap the hole in the bell housing and sort a cover for the fly wheel. and the stabilizer. while im there im going to try and fix the oil pressure switch leak. not sure how though.
with any luck (not that i have had any so far) she will be back on the road end of the week,

Orange and brown near sump are for OE oil pressure sender unit.
Blue purple and black… mmmm think they are perc fan, will have to check the book first though…
smithyr5gt
06-03-2014, 18:14
thats great thanks mate. i did think perc fan but wanted to check before removing them totally.
with the oil pressure wires how does it work as i have 2 sensors. one in the block and one in the oil feed for the turbo ( as seen in first clean picture ) bu each has only one connector,
and i was told the two wires are a pair that go together.
Good effort there, must of took some time getting the grime off! :agree: Should help with future tweaking as won't need glove to keep ya hands clean, or at least that's what I tell myself when scrubbing away.

 i wasnt happy that my wheels/tires looked crap  ill be getting some of that then mate.
It took me about 30 seconds to apply to all the wheels on my Mrs' Focus, they were dull/brown to begin with and came up great. I used about half the amount this guy does here, no need to rub in or anything:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im09qiSCa40
Looks like it's about £6 though:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=autoglym+instant+tyre+dressing&_sop=15
I usually spray some into a small cup and use a paint brush to apply, less waste and chance of over spray getting on alloys and paint work. :D

not much to update really. oil leak has stopped.car runs sweet as now. love driving it everyday. just two things to concentrate on now. stevos carb rebuild. and getting my car clean and tidy for FCS.
after FCS i will be concentraiting on getting all the bits for the new project. f7rt conversion. i will be picking up the engine friday. and will start stripping it and sorcing parts straight away. my not do the conversion till winter as i want the car for the summer. all depends on how fast i could change over the engines.
