New poster! (less than 10 posts)

I've had my 5 about a month now and I did buy it knowing it had a few issues, but now I could just do with a bot of help

The car seems to boost up fine then just feels flat and gutless, I've fitted a boost gauge today and it raises to around a bar (not sure if this is the issue). I'm fitting a wideband in the morning so that may answer some questions.

I've took the elbow off the top of the carb to see if I could see anything and all i could see was was a small pipe that a fine spray of fuel came out of when I pressed the pedal.

Thanks in advanced

That pipe with the fine spray is normal matey, it's the accelator pump jet. It does need to be set correct though so don't rule it out as a problem just yet!

At a bar of boost it should be quite punchy though, where are you taking the boost reference from? May be a boost leak somewhere?

Could just need a good service, plugs, dizzy cap & rotor, leads, filters etc.

To be honest mate I think it's something more serious than that, I've fitted my wideband this morning and its not looking to good,

On tick over it fluctuates from 13.8-14.6 which I assume to be ok?

Now on a run when cruising along it seems to be around 11.6-12.4 which again is this ok?

Now when on boost its bad it goes as bad as 17 which is not good i know, I've turned the boost right down now to around 8psi and it still seems flat and is running terribly lean, I've posted a video here of a run from about 1800 rpm in 4th gear

Start by checking the reference pipe to the fuel pressure regulator for splits, also change fuel filter.

Right, I've been doing a few bits and it seems to be better but still not right, it just doesn't seem to rip up like a turbod car should, it feels as if the boost is going somewhere just to where I want it

I've checked

Aei unit
Actuator
Cable tied or jubilee all pipes
Pressure tested intercooler
Checked jets
Cleaned dizzy
Checked pipe to fuel regulator

Any more ideas? I'm showing 12 psi on the gauge and its holding that, but it just feels like its got a boost leak? How confusing? Would a blown head gasket make it feel so flat? It doesn't smoke or overheat or show any mayo but it does have a bit of froth in the header tank

Please help..........

Where are you based, see if some one can pop over and have a look. :)

Based in derby mate, met up with Carl lynch at the weekend and he gave me those pointers that I've already checked, he's really busy at the moment, so I thought I would try and tackle it myself.

As per your 'hi everyone' thread, whereabouts in Derby are you so I can keep an eye out for you and your car? :agree:

I'm from heanor mate

Anybody got anymore ideas?

What are the jets in the carb, I mean what sizes?

Where is your boost gauge plumbed in?

My guesses are: that a boost hose has a split in it that is opening up under pressure, the dizzy drive is a tooth out, or perhaps the wastegate isn't opening/closing correctly. At this point it could be one of a number of things still.

Heanor. Rats, I'm never up that way. I'm in the centre.

It drives fine mate just is under powered massively, jets are standard, the Afrs seem to have got better since Carl had a tinker at the weekend and moved a few pipes that were on wrong, after speaking to Carl on Sunday he noticed the car has a t25 on it so it should go like the clappers really, it basically feels like a non turbod car

The boost gauge is t'd into the standard one, the wastegate seems free and I tested the actuator with a foot pump, you need to have a go in it to see what I mean! I've checked hoses and can't seem to see anything??

Cool.

Well, with that information, all my suggestions could still be the cause (barring wastegate then). Maybe also the O ring on the carb lobster. i.e. losing boost after the OE boost gauge off-take.

Changed the o ring so don't think it's that, how do I check the dizzy?

Thanks again mate

Is the distributor drive gear in the correct position?
Cam timing been checked?

Not running those roller rockers are you?

Fuel pressure regulator faulty? I had the same issue a few years back :)

ellclover

Matt-How would I check both these things? Is there a guide anywhere?

Fuel pressure regulator would give me real bad afrs though wouldn't it?

Roller rockers? What are they?

Don't worry about roller rockers, it was a good idea from another member that failed I think.

Distributor position from on here a while ago.....

I can grab a snap shot from the C block manual, but search button is quicker than finding a book at the moment.....

Out of interest do you know the history of the car and what work has been done to it recently? Things like head gasket, new camshaft ect....

ellclover

Not a clue on the history, the previous owner bought the car as a bit of a wreck, did the bodywork and couldn't carry on, so I've picked up with the engine and interior needing sorting, it's a tidy car so I don't really mind it's just a little frustrating

The car has had some mods engine wise but I'm
Just not sure what, like I said before it has got a t25 on it but I don't know about the camshaft, is there any easy way of telling?

Again the head gasket I'm not sure! I've ordered a compression tester which is coming today or tomorrow so that will be another thing to try!

Check the dizzy as per the link above.

Also, you 'might' be able to tell if there's an issue by looking at the contacts inside the dizzy cap. If the scorch marks are off to one edge of each of the contacts there's something wrong. If they are in the centre, keep investigating. :agree:

Also, is the carb base/gasket sealing properly?
