Stripping down my engine on a stand at the moment, is there and easy way of locking the crank shaft to undo the bolt that holds the pulley on?

Is the flywheel still on it?
If so, pop a bolt in a gearbox bolt hole in the block and counter hold the flywheel with a large screwdriver.
If you have an airgun/nut gun, its easy......

I took the flywheel off, but could easily bolt it back on, so could try that.
I've also got a impact gun, would that straight on the bolt work or do I still need to brace the other end?

I did not have an impact gun and have the very same problem. I took a pic of how I did it, in the Haynes manual it also gives the same advice. I had lack of tools as you can see.
