So, an exciting day today.
Popped over to Leeds with a mate to collect the phase 1 I bought from StuTHC back in the summer.
There's a lot of work to be done to get it right but it's basically sound and I'm quite pleased with her.
As it turns out, today is supposedly "national give your car a name day"
There are a few cars on here with nice or cute names already such as "Doris" "fluffy" and the recently departed "Bonnie" so I thought a nice cute girls name would suit her aswell. So here it is. "Ethel" :smokin:

I'll give her a good look over at the weekend and make a list of jobs to do but I'm quite confident that it shouldn't be too bad.

Well I've had it on the ramp for 2 minutes and got quite a grim list already.
Rear caliper bleed nipple snapped (no brakes at all)
Both front jacking points are toast
Both doors rotten
Bonnet absolutely rotten through
Tailgate has rust
Drivers window won't work (non electric type)
Rust in roof
Sills rotting
Water pump pissing water out. Was told that this has only just been sorted so maybe it's just a gasket that's not seated???
Rear window catch one side.
A good look at the weekend will no doubt reveal plenty more.
I can see mike @ GT Turbo spares will be earning a bit more shortly

Thanks Dave, I'll check that when I remove it. Hopefully it'll just be the gasket not seated right if stu has only just changed it.
I put it on the ramp tonight and it is a lot worse than I was expecting it to be.
Really disheartened with this one to be fair and if I wasn't so sentimental about cars I'd just break it to try to get my money back.

I don't really know mate. Obviously I'm gonna have to get someone to weld her up for me but god knows what to do with that roof
The smaller bits like sorting the brakes is something I can manage and water pump etc. upon reflection I think I paid over the odds for it, more than double what I gave for my electric blue phase 1 that didn't need welding but, 'live and learn' I guess.
Everything sorted for you coming over mate. Just make sure you pack your MIG in your bag

Ross - it's all doable my friend - like anything complex, don't think of everything at the same time, it'll just make your head spin.
Do 1 part at a time and you will be amazed how quickly things start coming together, it's not as bad as you think.
Roof - get stripping the paint off in those area's to see what is going on there. Patches can be welded in, carbon roofs can be fitted after treatment etc. The lads @ national day with the twin engined 5 (White) where a dab hand at the carbon.
Keep your chin up and make that ph1 what it once was - but maybe with a carbon roof
What are your plans btw - oe or whatever you can?

Yeah it's all do able but just frigging annoying. It was meant to be a quick turn around and on the road in a week. There was even talk of me driving away from stu's house in it but I'm pleased I never did as it wouldn't have made it a mile away in this state.
I may aswell have it done properly, otherwise I'll never have a phase 1 on the road

Ok, C405 , C means 3 door, 40 means "supercinq" 5 means 1.4 turbo engine
600 means UK right hand drive spec
031 means ,options fitted to UK spec car, rear wiper , etc..
K011827 , K = France,Dieppe build. 011827 could mean the 11,827 5Gtt but more likely the 11,827 Renault 5 "Supercinq" as they didn't just build the 5Gtt there but other models too...
Sorry I cannot give you more info but I could only find 1 old parts book, need the other one to work out build dates from engine numbers..

Thanks for taking the time to do that for me Paul :agree:
When I collected it from Stu, I was told it was the 27th into the country. I'm very sceptical of this though. Were 'keep fit' windows all that was available on early cars or was electric an option?
Thanks.

Have a read of this thread - http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=18436&highlight=phase+difference
Looks like PH1 had electric windows as an option.
LOL, Keep fit windows, :)
Elec windows were fitted as an option only, usually because of time it was just a kit fitted once the car got to the UK... along with alarms, sunroofs etc...
then the Dealers got to make the profit as it was sold as "Factory Fitted Equipment" ... well, the box supplied came from the factory anyway.. a factory near Birmingham, a factory near Derby too....;)

Well, LOTS and LOTS to report on this.
Chris has been doing sterling work on the restoration of Ethel and has been at it almost non stop for the last 3 months. I owe this guy so much it's unreal. If it wasn't for his enthusiasm and patience then I'd probably have scrapped this by now. It really was that bad. Cheers homie :niceone:
The car has had a full shell strip down and is in for paint at the moment which is hugely exciting for me :D
Not going to be red though
Any how. I made a catastrophic balls up choosing the colour for the kit to be painted. I wanted a faded plastic grey colour for the kit so chose a similar colour to the faded plastic in the small GT TURBO badge on the front grill. The results are not pretty and a total waste of £160 that I paid my painter

So I'm going to have to get them painted all over again. I don't want jet black but very dark charcoal this time I think. Has anyone got any recommendations?

Wow, never realised how bad this car was, I've known it for years!
Suppose it lived outside which is never good for a 28 year old car!
Well done for sticking with it, I like to use the phrase "where there's a welder there's a way" which is certainly the case with my latest project :scared:

Wow, never realised how bad this car was, I've known it for years!
You wouldn't believe how bad the car was Ashy
Floors were gone front to rear, boot floor pushed through with little pressure from my hand, jacking points, inner and outer sills, roof full of filler and twisted, rear axle mountings rotten, front inner arches and front panel rotten, bulkhead holed, battery tray holed, rear inner arches made from filler, silicone sealer and filler bodged over holes front to rear.
I've never seen one this bad.
It was impossible to rescue the original shell so I had to purchase a rust free mint shell at a fair expense just to be able to put it right.
What I purchased was an absolutely bare shell. No clips, rubbers or anything.
I am however having it properly re-shelled and will be having an IVA/SVA test to keep the original numbers.
Here's what I've dug up from DVLA on the matter:
In order to retain the original registration mark:
cars and car-derived vans must use:
The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer or manufacturer (e.g. receipt).
And two other major components from the original vehicle - ie suspension (front & back); steering assembly; axles (both); transmission or engine.
If a second-hand chassis or monocoque bodyshell is used a car must pass an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) and light goods vans must have a enhanced single vehicle approval (ESVA) or single vehicle approval (SVA) test.
I'll try to find some pics of how bad the original shell really was.
Fair play to you, I did think from the pics that it would require alot of work. Reshelling does seem to be the way to go since most of the car needs to be stripped when the rust is that bad, and as I'm sure some have, it's easier to just swap turrets over. Imo, unless its one of the special cars that has a history to boost the value, not just a mag feature it doesn't matter. If the donor shell is a gtt then is it worth all the hassle just for the plates when they could be transferred with dvla anyway? Especially since its known to be reshelled now. Campus shells tend to be less rotten too so worth using when this is the case.
Good luck, be good to see it back on the road.

The pictures don't show just how bad this car is. I stripped it down on my drive and was really shocked. There's one thing about fives they hide the rot well. The boot area was bad but all the inner arches on the inside had been skimmed with filler and painted there was just no where to weld to. Floor pans were the same. The tailgate was bowed out wards so guessing that's where the water went in. Underneath was rotten again it would require floors and inner and outer sills the wiring was shot I took the dash out put it inside house and had to remove 3 alarms and countless scotch locks it took hours to repair. Then the gearbox is a campus's one that's why speedo cable was just cable tied up. And engine loom was just a mess. Then there's the roof that was full of filler . Drivers seat had been put in on a homemade plate that was loose. And steering uj on rack had a bolt just pushed through uj with no nut . We just couldn't justify doing anything but stripping it. And starting again just didn't want people to think we gave up and scrapped a good car. Hopefully by next weekend the new shell should be painted and coming back :)

I really worry when people think re shelling is the best option, what I've found is the rust starts forming between panels at the spot welds and just spreads until the point you can see it, which is then too late :( I really don't think many will survive
That said, you guys were right to re shell, once the floor/boot pan is shot it's beyond saving IMO.
With regards to the Iva/sva, the only reason I can see that being worthwhile is if the new shell was either, a non turbo or phase 2 and you'd want it to stay as a phase 1 on paper?
Good work so far, nothing like seeing a five with a fresh lick of paint :smokin:

Well heres another thing that i forgot to add to this thread until now.
The engine :smokin:
Many moons ago i bought the europarts renault extra from ian nixon. It was a great bus but i ended up binning it one night in the snow.
I pulled the engine and left it in various places for 12 years or there abouts.
I knew it was now seized and in need of a rebuild so i lobbed it in the back of my van and headed down to Markey Marks for it to be rebuilt.
These pics are brilliant :wasntme:
As delivered
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/TURBOHEARSE/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsd370804a.jpg (http://s37.photobucket.com/user/TURBOHEARSE/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsd370804a.jpg.html)
And when opened up
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/TURBOHEARSE/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps925a4a8a.jpg (http://s37.photobucket.com/user/TURBOHEARSE/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps925a4a8a.jpg.html)

Unfortunately the spec wasn't quite what I was told it was when I bought it as the head was standard but the rest of it checks out ok.
So after mark rebuilt it for me, it now looks like this
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/TURBOHEARSE/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsa0982388.jpg (http://s37.photobucket.com/user/TURBOHEARSE/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsa0982388.jpg.html)
So the spec of it now is:
Fully rebuilt with new liners, bearings water pump etc etc
Lightened bottom end
Low comp pistons
Europarts cam
Volvo 480 turbo clutch
And for the purpose of running in will be using a stock t2 but when it's got some miles under its belt I'll be fitting something a little fruitier. Perhaps a t28?
Anyway, big thanks to mark for building this up for me :agree:
That's it for today :)

Props to you for sticking with that lump, i'd have tossed it right in the bin if i'd opened it up to that! :agree:

Yeah that was a 'slight' oversight on behalf of the painter :brickwall:
I'm heading over to Shrewsbury on Saturday to give a hand to rectify that and get it all bolted up properly. I picked up some new sideskirt clips a couple of years ago from Bod182 so can finally put those to good use.
Luckily my kit is ready now after having been painted again. I could really slap myself for having it painted grey first time round. Anyway, it's all sorted now and I'm finally happy with it

Such is life I'm afraid  but for the price of the paint job I can't be that upset. Hopefully we than reveal the holes again without causing any damage to the paint. Not likely though with my clumsy mallet hands
Great work love the colour to
Was it a campus or GTT shell, if it was a campus it won't have holes unless you swapped the wings with GTT ones, can't remember if the rears have holes as standard on campus shells, nor the clips for the side skirts

Campus are the wrong shape rear arches anyway Steve. I guess on a campus you'd see the original steel arch below the line of the plastic arch if it wasn't cut right

Well, been over to Shrewsbury this weekend to drop some bits off for the resto and then a quick drive down to Essex to collect some parts from TopCat.
Despite being an extra from 'TOWIE' and a massive bummer TopCat is a proper gent.
He's sold me some seriously sweet refurbed cup wheels and even chucked in a spare phase 1 drivers seat which I was in need of.
Cheers mucka :niceone:
Anyway after we got back last night it was too late to start doing anything on the car so left it till this morning.
Not long after dragging the new engine into the garage to start 'fitting up' r5beatty showed up with much needed sausage bacon and egg buns cheers dude. That's the breakfast of champions y'know :D
So we got the engine pretty much ready to drop in with a new volvo 480 turbo clutch on it too and that was it for this week.

This weekend was the first time I've actually seen the car since it's been painted and WOW!
The pictures from the other week do the car no justice at all. The paint is just so vivid it's unreal. Really made up with it but like a twunt forgot to take any pics before my phone died.
Hopefully back over to Shrewsbury in a few weeks to do a bit more. And have more 'cuddles' with Chris' mum
Bloody hell my mrs thought you were gonna rob the place when you scruffy twunts showed up!
So you have a resprayed shell & cup rims & you take a picture of a c1j? You need to sort your priorities out lol.
Just laughed out loud reading that comment about "you know who" ;)
Enjoy the stuff mate, I know you're committed when you make a 8 hour round trip to come get parts. Hopefully the seat and exhaust made the drive home a bit better x

Quite a good day on Ethel today.
Handbrake is now sorted
Drive shafts fitted
Engine mainly wired up and close to the point of running
Gearbox is full of oil now for the first time in over 10 years and it felt like it took ten years to fill through the small breather on the top.
Again a huge thanks to dan (R5beatty) for all his help and thanks to Chris, without his constant whinging and moaning, I'd've been tempted to grumble myself

but mad camber on the front. Probably because it's too low but it is all phase 1 set up which I think is meant to have more camber anyway.
New wishbones fitted
Fuel sender and uprated pump fitted
And best of all, the engine fired straight up first time and sounds real nice. The carb is going to want some fettling to get rid of a slight miss on the uptake of throttle and to get a nice, even, low tickover but it's all good
