Looking for a rwd or 4wd car with a fair bit of grunt pref small and fun:D so far its the EVO that's getting the vote. Needs to be practical as an every day car and quite reliable with 4/5 seats.
Main prob is that I'm looking at around 4k would like something a bit retro but with modern running gear. Any suggestions?:D

Capri :)
Volvo 740 estate turbo. But I guess that's not small but would be fun and very tuneable.

Yeah would need a fair bit of work as a c1j or bf18 would need major manifold mods to make fit plus a custom clutch. I guess a 172 lump would work well but then no boost also no lsd

Was thinking of 360ing the 5 have the gearbox at the back etc... But want something that I can just drive now and not worry about it so as they come is the best bet.
You can pick up Evo 5's for little over 4k if you look about now Gary. Or you are looking at Subaru's, good, fun cars but juicy.

No bigger than an Evo I'd guess. My mate's MPS is the opposite of boring. The thing is rapid (lightly tuned). Tbh, not sure on the handling but the grip is phenomenal, Clarkson appears to like the way it drives - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbvKv-PofzM ("I have driven £100k coupes that are less fun than this").

Love my Evo 6 I highly recomend an Evo, not really had any major problems with it starts and runs first and everytime. Have to use V power fuelyou get about 120 -200miles on a tank dependant on driving. Fuel gauges aren't very reliable so just reset your odometer every time you fill up and to be honest I top my tank up everytime I go out in it .
Other than the AYC and top mounts knocking (coilovers about to be fitted and refurbed AYC pump purchased) all is good and runs really well for a car just under 400bhp.
If you do go down the Evo route a few things to check on the Evo 4,5,6 and newer models AYC is working make sure bulbs not removed from rear of dash:crap: (easy to look 6 screws and dash clocks are out), Rust as not undersealed as made for Japanase weather even ralliart imports were not undersealed so check if it's just surface rust your lucky (like mine easy fix), also suspension knocks although most now run aftermarket the standard suspension and mounts are known to knock. Other than that the usual car check's engine noise's, smoke etc...

Audi B5 s4 stretch and get the rs4 so much fun to drive :)
agree with that, had an s4. understeers abit but quick on the flat, very quick above 80 with about 350bhp, ran 12.6sqm. couldnt afford an rs4 though :crap: nearly every job in the bay requires major surgery, replacing my manifolds was 3 days and engine out job on my drive
Try finding an RS4 for £4k, even if looking at old B5's!
A mate at work is selling an 53 plate S3 Quattro, nice clean car, well looked after (recent clutch, DMF, belts etc) & well within within your budget. Pretty sure you could haggle to sub £3k. Could get some more details if you like??

You don't want an expensive car, but you want an Evo?
You don't want a big car, but you want a 4 door saloon?
Basically, you want an Evo, so go and buy one, if you can find a good one. There's a couple of reasons why you don't see as many these days:
Because they're relatively cheap to buy, plenty of people buy them and can't afford to fix them when they break. They then get broken as they're worth more in parts.
They are knocking on a bit now, and they're rotting, BADLY. There's a lot of cars out there that look mint, but they rot from the inside out (the rear chassis rails is a common place - They look fine, until you stick a camera inside them). You think 5's are bad - Some of the Evo's out there now are truly shocking :(

Tbh I like the gtir but that's made of chocolate:laugh:
I always fancied a GTiR, been put off by the box tales... but every car has it's problems I suppose.
Those that say Audi S3/4, yeah, nice cars, but as expensive to fix as an Evo & half as quick.. Haldex is proper ****e as well.
I've had a fair few cars, S3, Evo 5, Astra Sri Turbo, Subaru's, 5's, Rover turbo's, Uno turbo..
Still the 2 cars that give me the buzz & I'd have again are the R5 gt turbo & Evo.. Subaru is a bit less harsh to run about in but the Evo just edges it with the rawness IMO.

Haldex on the s3, s4 has proper 4wd no electronics, and half as fast? Don't think so, Eco with the same power might have u off the line but 2 turbos and 2.7l of v6 will soon see him off. My s4 would regularly and with ease dispatch itself well past 150mph. Reliable but do cost abit if they go wrong and solid with not much in the way rust issues

LOL you won't get a delta for under £12k  Gary you really need £5 - 6k to even consider an evo 5 or 6 you may then be able to haggle the seller a bit.
Break your 5 for the good bits get what you can and scrap the shell or sell shell on. Your R5 is prob worth more in parts than as a working car although all yours needs is a spray job but then it's the cost of that the buyer will look at unless they have contacts whom can sort cheap:agree:

fun practical fwd car..... honda accord type r. lsd as standard, recaros as standard and go very well. 4 doors and a boot and a big one at that. cheap easy to work on but no turbo. remap is needed to get the vtec to sing a little better. i like the look of the pre face lifts better as they had extra bumper lips though the later ones had a stronger gearbox, most have been rebuilt by now. h22a7 engine produces more power than the prelude version and you will have change from 4k :agree:

But being a practical daily isn't their thing really. 30 liter tanks on 19mpg cars don't get you many miles. From Luton to the Surrey meet and back done a tank. But if you don't mind filling up every 100 milds than they're brilliant!

I think stus is a gt model and fetch quit a few more quid than your standard e36 m3, it has different spoilers splitters etc along with a half leather half alcantara trim with a one off British racing green paint work, some came with aluminium doors, don't think they had much extra in the engine department as they were the 3.0 litre, later came the 3.2 evo which had another 35hp.

Had a standard S3 few years back hated it worse car I ever bought lame power probably due to the extra weight of the car, crap handling, poor quality interior trim, door bottoms going rusty when it was 8yrs old..Sold an impreza classic turbo 2000 standard UK wagon to get the S3 as well, the wagon drove like a dream was a fantastic allround car handling was just epic power delivery for standard was superb, if you drove the S3 like you could the impreza you would end up in a ditch each and every time you pushed it the S3 was nice enough to look at but that was about it..:)

The old s3 looks dated and crap.
Why would you pick that over the leon.

Allways been a fan of the EVO over the impreza but that's just looks, anyone driven both that can comment on the differences between the two? Impreza can be had a lot cheaper but is a lot more common so think that's why I go for the evo.
as you know gary ive got a subaru impreza turbo uk model, my mate had a evo which i drove theres not much in it tbh, what id say thou is if you get a scub and want to save on tax get a pre 2001 as they are cheaper tax than the later years as the rules for tax changed my uk model is 220 bhp standard, blitz panel filter, hks dump and a prodrive exhaust and is fast enough for me, insurance is 550 but my area is high for insurance quotes just to let ya know, if you aint got one by november meet ill bring my rust bucket and give you a rip:laugh::laugh:
Impreza is alot softer to drive, more comfortable on the road, the Evo is quite harsh in comparison. (throttle response etc.)
Evo engine will last longer prob as the older sti/wrx oil pumps like to give up & do the bottom ends. Later evo's are better as the 4's suffer crank walk. All have pro's & cons, scooby has no AYC, you can get type R's that have the adj diff which can be fun...
