Would an iffy carb make the engine sound like it's running on three cylinders?? I rebuilt my carb for another reason but it didnt sound like this before.

I would say your problems are ign related, unless the fuelling is stupidly rich and sooting the plugs

Afr is showing 14,15s+ up and down. Ive not touched anything ignition side, since last time. Only things I've changed are new fuel filter and a new fpr.

Check for air leaks on the carb base if its hunting on idle. Also check your idle jet is clear

I did have the idle before the refurb running ok ish, after a lot of tweaking, but the afr readings are never really consistent, but probably down to the piper 300. One thing I was slightly concerned about is when I replaced the accelerator pump tube fibre washer, it just sits on the new one, no tight feel to it, not sure if that is normal or not? Could this be a cause of it running like its on 3 cylinders?

Ah with a piper 300 the idle might be pretty choppy unless you richen up the idle considerably.

The acc jet should be tight, i usually use the bigger fibre washer in the kit and ran it in tight. If its loose it may be dripping fuel into the venturi.

An update, I tried out an oe fuel reg and still had the same problem, tried 2 other carbs and then cleaned up the plugs, finally on the 3rd carb it's working as normal again. I noticed the 3rd carb had no fuel running down the venturi but the other 2 carbs did.. now I think I will try the Malpassi reg again using the working carb. Carbs are a nightmare!
