well not really a project as its mot'd taxed and insured :D meaning ive been able to drive it. a few little things to sort out, mainly a bulb, some indicator lenses and the brakes but all good fun. Picked her up thursday, insured and taxed on the friday and then off to french car show sat followed by the cotswold classic car show on sunday morning. Alot of people know the car but shes now mine :cooter:
a few pics from over the weekend

i might raise the rear 1 notch as its a touch too low. car drives well though she gets a wobble on, hopefully it just needs the wheels balancing :agree:

tip with the indicator lenses, you will need the whole assembly as most that are for sale have screws in a different place to the ones that are on that car.....

Not too much happening with this at the mo. Tidied up the bay a little, painted some rusty brackets and tried to get her to idle smooth. Undecided what to do with her next, my old one i converted to run a gtt carb and it gave a great increase in power. Id like to do the same or efi this time but im collecting parts so i can always return her to standard if i needed too. After doing the job before it should be an easy conversion if i went either way but i would try to keep it more oem. properly mounted fuel pump under the car with a modified pick up for the tank. The last one ran a swirl pot setup and 2 pumps mounted in the car, it was a little noisy and probably dangerous.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g278/adey1984/null_zpscbf6c8be.jpg
will try and find a new brake fluid res and header tank to clean it up a little more in there. Another little thing just to make her a little nicer to drive was having the sun roof tinted. In the sun it would beam through and make me squint alot. Its a little touch nothing major just makes it a little nicer in there, god im getting old
Cool as feck:agree: efi gets my vote

Excuse my ignorance but is the engine that far removed from that of the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2? Clearly fuel injection and turbos differ but internally?
Adey aka Ewok
07-08-2013, 15:39
not that different, the turbo had mechanical fuel injection and different turbo, also intercooled and i think made 160-165bhp stock. This has a draw through carb no intercooling and made 110bhp from factory, this has a slight boost increase and at last dyno put down 120bhp. my last one made 150bhp on a gtt carb at about 10psi. Dont think i will look at changing the turbo size as the lag kinda makes it what it is and gives it character. I think its higher compression than the turbo 2 and gtt so full efi should give it some oomph

Has the Renault 8 been sold
Adey aka Ewok
07-08-2013, 18:07
its undercover on the drive :agree:
Off the top of my head I think the compression ratio is 8.6:1 for the Gordini turbo.
What sort of power/torque can you run before the clutch slips? Am I right in thinking they run a smaller diameter clutch than the gtt?
I'm sure I've heard of gtt carb/intercooler conversions making close to 200bhp at 1 bar of boost, although perhaps that's with a different turbo also?
Adey aka Ewok
07-08-2013, 19:35
my last one was slipping at a bar this one will end up needing a paddle clutch though ive already got the part number for a helix. not sure if the higher compression ratio will limit power in the long run. yeah the gordini came with a 180mm clutch some had a 190 i think but ive not seen a 190mm flywheel.

has anyone hap plastic reflectors re chromed? mine are dulling a fair bit behind the newer lenses and could do with re doing if possible? Next on the to buy list are tinted yellow fogs or fog light covers? not sure what route to go down?
Also had a look at fitting my omp strut brace though it needs drilling to fit and im abit unsure if i should do it?

more pics done by a friend today, car was dirty but still looks good. Also been slowly working through some niggly issues, gear shift is now super slick and almost silent. greased up all the joints and adjusted the clutch cable. Will be removing the grill tomorrow to move the speedo cable so i can re align it a little better and i also found a split in the driverside bumper bracket, needs a small bead of weld and itll be fixed.

little update but not much to show yet. Flywheel is currently in a machine shop getting modified for a 44-1 trigger pattern, this will allow me to run an aftermarket ecu for mapable fuel injection and ignition. Should hopefully release a few ponies from her. Not looking for massive figures but hope to gain alot of mid range and make it a better drive. Its very old school with its delivery at the moment and doesnt get going till about 4k. An old manifold has also had it flanges cut off to donate them selves to the new inlet manifold. Design of that hasnt been finalized yet but its very tight where it needs to go so its going to be more design to fit than designed for big power. The rest of the bits, injetors and tb i hope to get from a clio 172, the loom i have is from my old sc 172 and was adapted to use stock clio 172 parts so if i can keep it with the same parts i dont have to do any re wiring of it. I will upload pics as i get things back from the shop and start to work on the manifold.
Also the you will be able to see the car in a magazine soon ;)
Adey aka Ewok

picked up the flywheel this morning, there were a few issues when trying to come up with a wheel that would work with an aftermarket ecu, the trigger pattern needed to be changed to a custom setup which required a custom writing of the ecu's software. this has been tackled by omex technologies and works on the test rig fine. next was to have the flywheel itself modified to have the trigger pattern on and thats when the fun started, it looks like it will work fine and although the stock casting/machining was slightly out this has been corrected. obviously i wont know for sure until its in and fitted but for now its a piece of the puzzle. next thing is to start building a manifold for it all.

i have being measuring up again today trying to see how i can squeeze and inlet manifold setup into the bay and im getting stuck. its tighter in here that it is in a gtt, theres a wiper motor in the way and the alternator over hangs the manifold slightly too. i dont want to mess with the shell or the original parts too much as id like to have the option to revert to stock if needed at a later date.
its hard to show what i mean but heres a pic. any ideas? i was looking to try and have 4 swept runners up into a barrel type plenum.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g278/adey1984/null_zps9f0ef28d.jpg
stumped really. wondering if i could go down the tried and tested gtt carb conversion though with a modded inlet manifold so the bonnet closes and run it with mappable ignition. I have also heard that the lancia carb might bolt to the stock manifold so that could be an option also though i have no idea if i can even get hold of one. Has any one here used one on s gtt?
Do you have any pics of a standard inlet manifold or measurements of the port spacing?
Adey aka Ewok
19-09-2013, 20:00
do you mean off the head face or carb face? yeah got plenty of pics if not it can go outside and grab some, whys that bud?
Just to see if it could be adapted to efi, have you looked at other car manifolds to see if the staving is similar and you could swap the flange over?
Adey aka Ewok
19-09-2013, 20:23
It's the space restriction that's an issue, I'm going to remove some bits to see if I can under mount the injectors on the stock manifold. I've seen efi done on lhd versions but they have some more space due to not having a steering rack running through and they can modify the bulkhead as the pedals are on the other side.
Adey aka Ewok
23-09-2013, 11:07
still unsure if i can build a manifold in there but i had a spare manifold so cut it up and the flanges faced off so i can use them if needed
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g278/adey1984/null_zps6402a2b0.jpg
i have been looking into some of the oem manifolds on other cars, there are a few that seem to have a very small plenums, i think i can get in and build one just, though injector placement is going to be a big issue. options are to mount them further back up the runners though ive been told that the closer to the valves the better?

popped and saw my mate paul today (paulya610) and he worked a little majic on my car so that i can have some music while driving, the car didnt have speakers or a stereo installed. I got hold of an old Blaupunkt Windsor that was modified to have an aux input so i can plug in my iphone. paul then mocked up some panels to hold some 10cm speakers then proceeded to run in all the wiring needed for them and the power wiring for the headunit itself. Great to be able to drive along with some tunes in there now :D

thats the plan :agree:
so ive started on doing some preventative work, was getting a little bit of smoke when pulling up at lights after a hard drive. the rear of the turbo was so old that the clamps and bolts holding it to the core were rotting away and looked like they were leaking, also was getting a faint whine after a while of driving. I have a brand new turbo so thats now getting swapped on.
Efi side of things is taking a while, getting an inlet made up is turning into a bit of a pain due tot he shape it needs to be and also finding parts to make it out of seems to be difficult. ive been trying to find ali bends and such to mock it all up out of but to no avail. ive got hold of yet another inlet manifold so i will look again into modding the original inlet for injectors. Flywheel should be sent of in the next week or 2 for balencing.

still tying to find some gaskets for the manifold. i think ill just make some now.
omp brace is in position and ready to be bolted into place. it will require some hoses to be shortend slightly so they dont rub but hopefully it should tighten the car up a little

ive also managed to get a set of allycat alloys on ebay. should be here soon, 13x6. something a little different and im unsure what colour to do them. they all need a refurb but look like these

no mate, im actually going to convert the hubs to fit the wheels. finding decent r5 3 stud fitment alloys will cost upwards of 1k. bit much for me. the hubs are studded already, so ill punch them out and redrill in the ford fitment the wheels are in:agree:
adey, when I had mine I popped to Wicks and in plumbing supplies they do a pack of small round rubber seals. These fit the manifold and can be used to replace the standard washers. Hope that helps pal. Car looks lovely.

turbo is nearly back on, just waiting on a new actuator to turn up and ill give her a few drives if its dry out before i sorn her for the winter. if all goes well when she comes back out next year she will be running sweet and hopefully full efi :D

First post!
Hi,
Just been reading through your thread and I have converted my gordini turbo to run efi. When I first did it the injectors were about 15mm from the inlet face of the head and I had really bad fuelling problems on idle with fuel pooling in the ports.
I then machined the head and pressed sleeves in to hold the injectors so they were positioned right at the back of the inlet valve this solved all the idle running problems.
There is another thread on here with a guy using a gordini head on a gt turbo and he has machined about 1" of the inlet ports off than has mounted the injectors.
I used a clio 172 inlet manifold bolted to the head with a normal cable throttle body fitted and a charge cooler.
Good luck with the project.

Sounds good, do you have or can you take some pics of your inlet manifold setup please, would be good to see how you've gone about it as there's next to no space in there?

I managed to dig out some photos from while back things have moved on a bit since then but you'll get the idea. Also a couple of photos from some sprints and brake / body mods over the years.
The 3rd picture shows the head being machined for sleeves to be pressed into take the injectors.
The car started off using a Lancia HF turbo twin choke carb onto the standard manifold.
It took alot of time to get the EFI sorted and a whole season of tuning / modifying and setting up to get it to run well, and its still really a work in progress there always seems to be something else to do.

I machined out the hub carrier to take a super 5 wheel bearing then pressed the drive flange from a gt turbo into the hub. I then machined the splined center out to take the gordini splines.
It seemd to be the only way to be able to locate the wheel on the center.
I think the photo shown is from a earlier verison with the gordini drive flange just redrilled to 4 x 100 and then studs fixed in to a ring behind. But I could never get the wheels to centre properly which caused vibrations.

after a few poorly translated emails its on its way to me for a decent price. This should fit straight on and now either allow me to mod it for injector bosses or fit jenvey itb's and a plenum. ill see how funds are looking in the next few weeks before i decide what to do. After that itll just be an ecu needed and a new clutch then the main fitting can be started :D

That's a much throatier sound than a c1j. I assume that's due to the cross flow head?
Sounds great.
Is it a 5 speed in these adey?
Adey aka Ewok
07-12-2013, 12:03
yeah wee 5 speed box in there. its on a stock exhaust and stock inlet with airfilter and a draw through carb, i havent heard a stock 5 gtt for years so wouldn't know how different the sound was sorry
probably more to do with the twinchoke weber carb....

its never easy or plain sailing when trying to do something that's not normally done. Whipped of the inlet manifold this eve (what a c**nt of a job) to offer up the inlet manifold. I knew it might not fit due to the manifolds only being available for left hand drive cars and low and behold it doesn't lol. Im now going to have to look at modifying the bulk head above the pedals and move some of the wiring loom out of the way  hopefully i have enough space available above the pedals to do it.

this is the part of the bulk head that needs reshaping and theres some wiring that comes through it that needs moving also

so today i had a spare 30min to tinker on the car. I decided to start removing some material to clear the manifold. Painful to do but want to get it ruffly right before removing the engine. Need to borrow a dremell with a slitting disk to get it all removed but it should get me somewhere close. Our continental friends have the luxury of being able to cut huge amounts out but i dont have that luxury :crap:, Once the engine is out i will weld it up nicely.

Also in the post today is a nice cam from Mr Cooke. I have been told its wilder than the turbo 2 cam so it should make a nice addition to the efi.
Loving the work mate, car looks good on the rollers to :agree:

cheers buddy, hopefully it will all come together over the next couple of months.
this is as far as i can get without some cutting equipment.

its a little too high to close the bonnet. i have 2 options now. have a plenum made or flip it so the inlet is underneath and modify the inner arch?

i do like the thought of using the jenvey plenum too......... ill make a decision over night tonight before busting out the grinder and welder

you might want to keep your eyes open for a T3 off an Escort RS Turbo. From memory you have a 40 trim compressor and a .24ar exhaust housing and the escort is a 45 trim with a .36 exhaust. (from memory, so almost certainly faulty information.) That'll either turn it into a laggy POS, or a boost monster :D
Adey aka Ewok
14-12-2013, 08:50
Already been looking lol, what sort of boost and flow do you think my turbo can flow?

assuming you have the 40 trim.
Boost won't be a problem, flow will, I think it'll be about there in the 1bar/180hp area. Just guessing though. IMO, if you want to make 200 you want the 45 trim, you should be able to swap the exhaust housings between the two to see what works best.
Normally you couldn't just swap those compressors with the draw through carb, your turbo should have fancy seals to allow that. Not going to be needed with he EFI.
btw, don't think I'd bother with the throttle bodies. Can you get an injector in a better position?

Injector position was half the reason for using itb's, there no space for injectors further down the manifold and getting it fabricated up without sending them the head was a pain. I'm not too bothered about that really as it's only economy that'll suffer so I'm told?

I use to run a Cossie 4x4 T3 in the escort .36 turbine housing on the c1j. Wasn't very laggy just a bit lazy would imagine it being better on your lump.
Boost threshold was about 3.3/3.5k once in third gear it went very well indeed. From what I read around 220/230 is the max out of the .36 with a bucket load of boost.

Are the t3 exhaust housings pretty interchangeable? I'll do an eBay scour shortly and see what I can find
I think the ford ones all use the same rear wheel trim. I first used a 2wd cosworth T3 in the .36 than later used the 4wd in the same housing.
Adey aka Ewok
14-12-2013, 13:36
cool stuff. so i assume the 4wd used a bigger front end?
Had a chat with bill at badger 5 (vag tuner) who looks after my daily, he makes up custom inlets for the vag fraternity, he said he cam make me up a plenum in the new year so i think ill go down that route rather thank hack more of the car about. itll probably be very basic but itll get the air into the cylinders im sure. Im reading contradicting info on the web regarding having trumpets inside a turbo inlet plenum. any one have any input?
The car will most likely be worked on slowly over winter now as i do smaller jobs like the wiring and fuel line plumbing. Aim is to have the car back out and on the road for national day so i have a while yet....

I'm pretty sure the Turbo2 had a .36ar housing. T3 exhaust housing should all be interchangeable, they use the same wheel. The only thing you might be interested in is that series 1 RS turbo didn't have watercooling, so that might be one to look for I don't think you have water cooling?
When it comes to cossies I think they have .48 ar exhaust housings, 50 trim compressor on the 2 door, and 60 trim on the 4 door. I'd stick to the series 1 escort jobbie

nice one cheers. i didnt have water cooling for a turbo no but i did have it for thecarb so i could retro fit it if i needed too.

no mate, im actually going to convert the hubs to fit the wheels. finding decent r5 3 stud fitment alloys will cost upwards of 1k. bit much for me. the hubs are studded already, so ill punch them out and redrill in the ford fitment the wheels are in:agree:
My neighbour has 4 brand new gordini turbo alloys and wants to sell them.! Ill post some pics up.

still undecided what to do with the plenum, the jenvey turbo plenum looks like a nice design and is so say designed for proper distribution of air? does this really make a difference on a turbo motor?
also got a package from andrew cooke today

now thats done i can get on lifting the engine and box out. tidy up all the cuts and weld in some material to make it all solid again. While they are out i can fit new fuel lines and get the tank modified with larger feed and return lines
No messing about :agree:
Will the bonnet clear ok that way?
Adey aka Ewok
16-12-2013, 23:01
yeah this way round i can close the bonnet without any issues. A little more work to sort it out but should be better in the long run :agree:
