£55 for a battery tray

Tell me there's a cheaper way to get a new one of these?

You forgot the nine quid delivery so that's 64 to most.

The price is mad!! I have wanted one for ages but £64 delivered......

These must cost peanuts to knock up surely??

Someone used to make replacement trays out of stainless. Not sure if they are a member or not

It was one of the Duncan's who used to sell the stainless ones I think, at £35 or thereabouts IIRC. :agree:

£64 is a lot, I agree totally.

The market will dictate whether these are worth paying for at this price though. There can't be a lot of demand out there so supply has to be reduced, meaning price is likely to increase to make the cost/effort of supplying them worthwhile. The fact that Duncan is no longer pushing his stainless versions on the classifieds suggests there's not a lot to be made out of the exercise.

Price seems reasonable to me .
I've had bits made over many years and people always forget the amount of time and effort it takes to get stuff done .
You are paying for custom parts made in low volume so forget all that 'must cost peanuts ' Yes ,if producing thousands then the cost of the tooling ,materials ,set-up for small run etc etc .+ without the profit on these things why would anyone bother and secondly how long do you think they would survive to be able to do anything .

I'm just about to start remaking the GTA/610 subframes .Add up the materials and not too bad but then add in the jig ,weld, low volume cut shapes ...not going to see much change out of a grand or more for the first off ......If I'm lucky .

One of the lads over on RAOC has just had these done and I'm pretty sure not much return for his efforts .I'm willing to support anything like this and it keeps the cars alive and makes my job far easier ;)

Duncan's ones were crap. I had 4 off him for local members and everyone I them snapped and I had to reweld it.
I mentioned it to him but it didn't go down well.

Got to agree with Clee, not bad price considering the time and effort to make them

I had a crap stainless one before, not sure who off now, weak spot welds and bird s**t welds that were rusting and broke easy. I got bms to tig weld it up. He made it how it should of been to start with:)

The stainless steel tray I had was rubbush; it didn't hold the battery securely at all so I bought the one from CGB. Great fit and holds the battery as it should do. Not that bad a price really.

I have the Renault one too. Bought it a few years back and it wasn't cheap then, £40 if I remember ?. First thing I did was give it a few more coats of paint to protect it further as the factory finish seemed quite thin.

Also thinking about fitting one of these types of mat - http://www.frost.co.uk/acid-absorbing-battery-mat.html

Hoolio

The reason these seem so susceptible to rust is that water pools in there, I think that mat will just retain that water there for longer.

Looks like I stand corrected...£64 is a total bargain then!!

And people wonder why we can't attract or keep members.....:sad2:

Looks like I will have to sell one of my 10 bagged up and new gear knobs to buy a battery tray eh ;)

Alex

I'm not sure how the price of a battery tray is directly linked to attracting new members?

For reference though, after we altered the membership fees and in the lead up to ND, I've noticed an influx of new membership requests :)

Trevhib

Don't take it to heart Liam.

It just shows the market forces at work, where you have two GTT parts (battery trays and gear knobs), that are both subject to the same price increases due to their short supply at a time when demand for them still exists. You're benefiting from one and suffering from the other. That's a zero sum game, so it's not all bad :agree:

Move the battery to the other side ;) fixings are all there to slot in if you re-use your clamp and bolt, then just feed the power leads and your £64 better off. :agree:

I was just purely trying to highlight how at times people can be a little short and sharp and possibly sarcastic in their replies. That was all. Hence at times people's possible reluctance to post in fear of being shot down! Thus leading to the possibility of not joining/rejoining.

I always try to be helpful and post as though as I talking face to face to a friend. If people are a little sharp on here, it doesn't offend me. I just think at times a bit of kindness and manners goes a long long way.

In relation to the club members numbers, I think it's great that they are increasing. I would be lost without the RTOC in regards to restoring my GTT. :agree:

Trev - I didn't take it to heart :) was only trying to highlight how at times maybe members should think ' would I like that reply ?' Before they post :cartman:

And I wish I had 10 gearknobs in bags. Lol. I only have the one. But years ago I did get offered 10 for £200. I refused as you could still get them from Renault. Doh!!!

As far as I am concerned I won't be saying anymore regarding this, apart from ill be saving my pennies to get a new battery tray ;)

You just missed out on a stainless one on another thread (joke). Can't believe the timing of that

Disclaimer: I have no idea if said tray is the same as the ones mentioned above.

As for sarcasm. Most RTOCers are getting old and grumpy. Especially me. :mart: I think the point is, saying a £64 price is mad is a questionable statement, and so it was questioned. That's all. :agree:

Quite possibly :) I just went and checked mine anyway and it's not too bad. Although not as perfect as I'd like tbh. But hey ho..

And anyway- u say some members are getting old and grumpy these days. What's classed as old then? (I am 34) :D

At risk of causing more offence .....I really don't see the logic in a price war in such a small market other than for the sake of it .
Just had this very conversation over on the Alpine site .No point two doing the same items

Get it sandblasted (or something), and painted up Liam. Extend its life :agree:

Getting it out might be a problem. There's a tricky bolt in the bulkhead AFAIK.

Well worth hooking it out and refurbishing it I'd say. They're easy to get out; you can reach under the dash for the bulkhead bolt :)

And you can def get the bulkhead bolt by reaching under the dash? Obv through the passenger footwell?

Alex
30-07-2013, 08:45
Yep. You need to pull the carpet back a bit obviously but that's the way I've always done in. In fact I've never actually had to fully remove the bolt from the footwell, just undo the nut in the bulkhead. :)
