View Full Version : Alternative GREAT Engine's for a 5?

So if we didn't want to stick to using the C1J, F4R B18 etc Renault Engine's and wanted a different engine in our 5's what would we choose??

Those mechanically minded members like Duncan Grier, James5, Scoff etc have transplanted some VW 20v 1.8Turbo Engine's & gearboxes but I wondered if there was anything else that would be worth a look, that's not been done before??

The reason for me starting this thread is over the last 2 days I've been driving a Ford Focus hire car with the 125bhp 1.0 Ecoboost engine and I have to say in my opinion it's a frikkin HERO of an engine!!! :niceone: It managed to haul a Focus ESTATE up to true (GPS Verified) 130MPH on the Autobahn and just loves a good thrashing!! I was having a hoot hustling this Focus round some tight corners.

It's only a 3 Cylinder so if fairly small, lightweight (Apart from cast iron block) and I reckon would easily fit into a 5 complete with 6 speed gearbox?!

The ONLY thing that would put me off would be fact that it's a Ford engine :crap:

Anyone else stumbled on a great engine like this??

3 cylinder engine from the Aygo/C1/107

I had an aygo and have to say it was fantastic sort of wish I hadnt sold it, rev happy little 998cc, superb on fuel, cheeky exhaust note and I know they sell a rotex supercharger for them.

To add.... I see that Ford do a 1.6 Ecoboost engine (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-FOCUS-1-6-ECO-BOOST-150ps-ENGINE-GEARBOX-ECU-COMPLETE-VERY-LOW-MILEAGE-/310681865085?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4856150b7d), I reckon that would be WIN!

Aren't they Longtitudinal as well? Meaning you'd need to fashion a transverse gearbox on somehow?

u could fashion an adaptor plate to fit ur g/box

This is what I wanted to do with my old raider shell but the rule book to go racing did not allow it at the time.

Honda lump for sure - B18 or K20 turbo.

What do you want from it?

Cost effective power level without opening engine?
Weight vs power?
Ease of conversion?
Wide power band for road?
Track / drag beastie?

Tfsi lump if far ahead of the older 1.8 20v Turbo

I think the engine needs to be light, or at least no heavier than the C1J or it will effect the handling balance negatively. For that reason I'd go for a B16A.

I think you also need to consider the availability of tuning parts. The B16A and the VAG 20v both have a heap of tuning parts available to them.

I'll also say that you need to consider what gearboxes are available to them and their tuneability, as in ratios or gear set availability.

can it get more alternative than a V12 Packard?

Vw 1.9tdi engine. 6 speed box. Good mpg and would go like stink in a 5.

Was a boy round this way had a chipped pd150 in his mark one golf , roughly 190 bhp and heaps of torque plus used to drive it to his work as had excellent mpg , always wanted that car , would have been the perfect balance of everything !!!

Because I don't have access to the same variety of engines as you guys do in the UK I have started to look at other stuff. One engine/gearbox setup that caught my eye was that fitted to the early EVOs 1-3(An early version of the 4G63, as Mart has definitely NOT already mentioned). The engine is the other way around from EVOs 4-10, but that actually works better for a RHD car. You'd be able to go AWD too!

The 4efte(from a starlet gtt)is a good engine, and has loads of tuning potentional.theres also the 5efte engine(1500cc),I ended up using both and wish I hadn't of sold the car sometimes, purely for the fact that it was unique.i think I was making around 240hp @ 1bar(4efte)

Abarth (Fiat ) T Jet or Multijet. 160bhp / 240ftlb 1.4L out the box, compact, and revvy. Probably the best engine ive com across!

Would be perfect in a five.:agree:

Love these engines - with steel internals 400hp plus is easily achievable with the right turbo and management!

One of these please - Although it might not be the cheapest engine to run/maintain (if you can even find one). Actually it doesn't really belong on this thread, but it's an incredible bit of kit, so sod it

These are available in Oz but quite expensive to tune here.

Just wait for the next generation Twingo RS lump, 1.4litre 16valve dohc chain driven, all aluminium block and head, around 140-150bhp stock :)

Or just whack a good old f7p/r in there with a tubby nailed on the back :)

The VW Polo 1.4 TSI with its Twincharger engine is pretty impressive.

177bhp at 6200rpm and 184lb/ft between 2000-4500rpm

I've been thinking a lot about a VW tdi-PD lump. Great engine, great mpg and so tuneable. I have one in my daily and the 130bhp is good and strong in a heavy Bora.

Or selling the 5 and doing a PD conversion in a Lupo :D

Kind of disagree with the Vag derv lumps as the low sown torque that makes them so good in heavier cars is wasted in a light car and even the later cr lump I have in the vrs does not rev like a petrol, it tries though lol

The 1.4 twin charger is a great little lump with 7 speed dsg but not the most reliable Vag lump

1.8tsi with k04 tfsi turbo and head would be a nice rev hungry setup
